  • We have a big aim for 2023 and that is to install stock fencing around the whole farm boundary plus the majority of our old and new hedgerows and watercourse. Of course I'd love to stand by my DIY believes but with time constraints and the help of a host of CS grants, it's great to have Tom back for a few days to het started.

    It would be helpful if, at some point, you show an overhead map of your property so that we get a better idea of what you are doing with the fencing. Thanks

    Watching this, I really envy you. You're creating a really lovely farm here. So organised and future-proof. And yet cosy as well.

    Use differential braking on the back wheels,most tractor did have it not sure if they do these days.The tractor then pivots around the braked wheel. Really useful in tight spaces.

    Might be worth saving fleeces for mulching around the fencing and if there is access until the hedge is planted, grazing it down should also help.

      Yeah we should be able to run sheep down the gaps followed by pigs before planting the hedges which will help. 👍

    Did you prefer the Milwaukee or DeWalt staple gun?

    Have you considered planting Apple trees in the field boundaries along the hedges. I’ve seen this done in Germany and it seems to provide a useful bonus crop for little or no effort. And, think of the cider…

    • @diyfarm
      @diyfarm  Před rokem

      Absolutely. We do have a requirement for only certain species where we are using grants towards planting however lots of other places we plan to do just that, especially up by the veg gardens.

    The hedges need to be traditionally laid, not cropped as per normal farming practices. Otherwise you just get a very happy hedge useful for nought. I take off my hat for going down the route though. Back in the 19th century, hedges were laid as a plaited 'rope" for speed. More brownie points for planting trees i hedgerows. Originally they had a utilitarian use around the farm as a supply of anything from tool handles to building timber. BTW gates can be hung so they self close. Worth doing

      Unfortunately most of the hedges that are there already are next doors so not ours to leave the 10 years it would need for them to be laid. Perhaps with out new ones though. There are a few stretches that we would like to lay which have been left. 👍

    Really looking forward to the hedging. Is the plan to lay any of the existing hedges in the meantime and close up the gaps? Any thoughts about styles? Its going to look incredibly smart once all completed

      @diyfarm  Před rokem +1

      Most of the hedges belong to neighbours but may leave the couple of runs that are ours and lay those in a few years. Some infill planting to do as well.

    Can you advise me where you got the grant for the fencing work please.

    • @diyfarm
      @diyfarm  Před rokem

      Some of it qualifies for CS grants through rural payments. All depends if your holding is large enough and if fencing qualifies.Worth looking in to.

    How many acres is your farm?

    How do farmers plan to cut the hedges with fencing on both sides?

    • @diyfarm
      @diyfarm  Před rokem +1

      Sheep followed by goats. Top can be cut if required but we will leave our to grow a bit.
