  • Fuerteventura Airport Guide - What is it like/Where to go/Picking up a hire car
    Fuerteventura airport (IATA Code FUE) is really good in my opinion. It is modern and large enough so that there is always somewhere to sit and wait for your flight, even during busy periods.
    It is located just south of the capital, Puerto Del Rosario and about 5 miles north of Caleta de Fuste. Looking at the terminal building from outside, the arrivals area is to the left and the departure area is at the other end.
    When you arrive, if you are having a coach transfer then turn right when you come out of the baggage hall and head out of the doors at the end where you will find the coaches parked.
    If you are hiring a car then head left after coming out of the baggage area and you will find the car hire desks along there. Once you have the car keys head out of the nearest exit and take the stairs/lift over the service road which will take you to the hire car parking area.
    Advice on hiring a car in Fuerteventura - www.jpinfuerteventura.com/dri...
    Advice on driving in Fuerteventura and local driving laws - www.jpinfuerteventura.com/dri...
    On your return journey, if arriving by coach then this will drop you off outside departures. If you have a hire car you will find the entrance to the car hire parking on the left just after you enter the airport. Park in an empty space in your company's area and make a note of the bay number. Then hand in your keys at the office either in the parking area or in the terminal.
    You will find plenty of Fuerteventura airport shops and Fuerteventura airport restaurants once you go upstairs to the departure lounge. I show you where the Fuerteventura airport smoking areas are too.
    I hope this will give you an idea of what is Fuerteventura airport like.

    Really helpful thanks JP espescially as I'm coming back to Fuerteventura for the first time in 28 years! And I remember the airport/terminal building as virtually a shack then. Amazed at how it's changed. Great to see where to go etc re check in/deps. It cuts the anxiety when you've an idea of what's what/where's where. Yes, bloody typical that Duty free is right at the top of the escalators! Kind of similar thing at Manchester - you are 'forced' to go through Duty free. Looks a nice airport now.

    I like it that you are fairly quickly done when you give your rental car back. So even if you are late, it's not a big issue. I would like to add that if you go to Corralejo, don't take the route that Google maps suggest. Just follow the coast road and you will not regret it 😉.

    I noticed that at 2.12 you enter onto a roundabout and stay in the right lane to basically go near enough all the way round the roundabout. Here in the UK we would go into the inside lane if taking an exit past the 12pm time on a clock face unless otherwise stated.
    Is this how it is in the Canaries? Just wondering because whenever we have hired a car in any of the islands we seem to get beeped at by locals so not sure if different from the UK.

    Hi JP, can I ask why you picked where you live? And not at a coast town? I like the north of the island although I have seen a villa at Aguas Verdes, on the west coast. Not sure if it is too far out. I know it's not such a large island but if you had to chose your ideal place to live, where would it be and why?? Obviously, since issues with Corona has put a stop on me visiting at the moment. Looking for a holiday escape and future retirement home. I enjoy marine aquarium keeping as a hobby, I believe there are aquatic stores in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, any in Fuerteventura?? Many thanks, Steve

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  Před 3 lety +1

      Our preferred place to live would be El Cotillo but there are basically no houses with gardens there, and if there were any, they probably would have been out of our price range anyway. So we had to go inland a bit. Aguas Verdes is certainly a long way from anywhere really. You would probably have a 30 minute round trip (or more) just to buy some milk. I haven't noticed any aquatic stores but then I haven't really been looking for them either so there may be - in Puerto perhaps. Thanks for watching Steve.

      @@JPinFuerteventura Thanks JP, watching your films is very interesting and informative. I know you said it's expensive to buy a car there, why couldn't you bring your car from UK, I guess if left hand drive over from the Spanish mainland via ferry?? I think there is a ferry from Cadiz?? Import costs?? Also, can you get Amazon and eBay in Fuerteventura, same as UK or are the import costs far more?? Look forward to watching more on the island, give the boys a treat😀

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  Před 3 lety +1

      @@heronaquatics4661 It isn't always easy to get a rhd car registered here. Cars are more expensive but not incredibly so and the good thing is that they may be more to buy but they hold their value better than in the UK so so you can sell them for more too. Amazon and Ebay are pretty much finished here as most sellers won't ship to the Canary Islands (even from mainland Spain) and you often get hit with made-up delivery fees and import fees too anyway making them too expensive. You have to learn to live without unfortunately.

      There is a pick up/drop off lane but it is always full of parked cars. I did complain by email to the airport manager about that a few years ago but, typically, didn't even receive a reply. It is best to just park in the main car park when meeting someone as it isn't expensive.

    Regarding budget car hire on the Canaries I'd said below 'Avoid 'Gold Car' like the plague' but I'd like to add a helpful note. 'Gold Car' are indeed bad, we had a British TV expose about them last year showing how the routinely rip people off (you'll always pay £100 on top of what you paid when you took the car, don't ask me to explain, they make it complicated as hell but trust me, you'll pay!). 'Euro Car' are also pretty bad, marginally better is local firm 'Cicar' but really the best, if you can find one, is a laid back, unassuming little company called 'Orlando'. The Spanish all use them (that tells you something) altho' they're not immediately inside airports. They do have a website tho' & once they get to know you they're even better (they don't even bother inspecting the car when you return it & keep your records on their system which 'Gold Car' don't do). Their shops are red and white & they're the best I've found in 20 trips to the islands. I'd say get to your resort by bus, taxi or by using the 'transfers included' option when booking, then find an 'Orlando' office using google & hire a car on your first day - be polite, smile, try & speak a little bit of Spanish & you'll be good to go! Normal price is about £75 a week & you return the car with the same petrol you took it away with.

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  Před 3 lety

      I have heard bad things about Gold Car too but there again a German friend of mine, who comes here for 3-4 months over the winter, and at other times, always uses them and gets some amazing deals. As little as 70€ a month for much of the time. He has a cheap car rental excess policy but never needs to use it with them anyway. I always used Autoreisen before we moved here.

    JP, you say you don't read the news so you may not have heard this. Today, Sunday, infections up again here to 157 with 10 in hospital, 2 in ICU but still only the one death. Yesterday, Saturday, despite what you may read elsewhere in Vlogs, the Guardia Civil with the Local Police were out in Morro Jable and Costa Calma fining people without masks and enforcing capacity limits on bars and closing times. Today they are out again but as I haven't spoken to any of my friends on the inside today I can't say where, but rumour was they would hit Corralejo so as usual take care especially as there is now a Whatsapp number for the Cabildo, which is something like CrimeStoppers in the UK, for reporting infractions of the Covid laws.
