America was on top of the world back then, we were all too caught up in post-Cold War and later post-9/11 victory disease to be much concerned with domestic politics, much less be “traumatized” over it. The closest thing to polarizing was the Defense of Marriage Act, which was really just political pandering by Bush to social conservatives and evangelicals, who had criticized Bush during his first term for being too far to the left on policies such as No Child Left Behind (this was a product of a very centrist cabinet, comprised mainly of pro-business conservatives and socially liberal neoconservatives - there really was not a social conservative anywhere to be found in the Bush administration, demonstrating the era’s lack of polarization.) Some deride the era as the “uniparty” and there are policies from the era that can be criticized (chiefly a naïvety about the CCP and allowing the PRC into the WTO), but overall America was confident and outward-looking rather than being caught up in culture war nonsense or racial strife.

Listen, I’m a social liberal and I like social progress, not only is it good for people on an individual level but it’s good for America as a whole; there are few things more dangerous than a stagnant society without progress. However there are also few things more dangerous than revolutionary rhetoric calling for the overthrow of society: tearing down Rome doesn’t help anyone out, all it does is make everyone equally miserable.

Neoconservatives on the other hand are social liberals who’s hawkish views on foreign policy led them to switch to the Republican Party and align with conservative hawks, and they all then served together in the Reagan and Bush Sr. White Houses.
Bush Jr. brought the band back together, and his cabinet and advisory boards were filled with both neoconservatives (Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Doug Feith, etc) and conservatives hawks (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, John Bolton, etc.), which is where I think a lot of the confusion comes from.

Only if you let it depress you. It's dark humor. It's true & funny yet painful at the same time. When this was made, back in like '05, people didn't take shit that seriously.
