  • Why modern militaries still need artillery. Anyway, before we move further, we will identify what artillery is. Artillery refers to a class of heavy military ranged weapons built to launch munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry firearms. Early artillery development focused on the ability to breach defensive walls and fortifications during sieges, and led to heavy, fairly immobile siege engines. As technology improved, lighter, more mobile field artillery cannons developed for battlefield use. This development remain today, modern self-propelled artillery vehicles are highly mobile weapons of great versatility generally providing the largest share of an army’s total firepower.

I think people forget that artillery fire isn’t random. They are quite accurate weapons. I mean, we’ve only been at it for a couple hundred years. You tend to get good at things.

Artillery is the most cost effective way of delivering massive firepower to a target. Even when air supremacy has been achieved, artillery is clearly the cheaper option compared to bombing. Also it can provide fire support when you need it indefinitely, while aircraft can only loiter in an area for a limited time before it has to refuel/rearm. With that said, the Ukraine war has become an artillery war because of highly effective anti-air capability on both sides has precluded any possibility of saturation bombing without the attacker suffering massive casualties.

If there is one thing the Ukrainian war has proved it is the efficacy of artillery. With the advent of mass use of drones in recent conflicts one could have guessed that it would be relegated into a secondary role in the battlefield but that didn't turn out to be the case this time, quite the opposite.

Well man kinda true but less about out outsmarted. Cruise missles are way harder to stop especially fast and low flying ones. Artillary is behind the most modern missles but way cheaper and faster to produce for bulk effect even under economic constraint and sanctions on parts like electronics.
