I don't think you need to learn the words of the songs, per se, in order to record an album. It's a different situational setup. In a studio, you can stop, pause, play, rerecord, etc. On stage, not so much. It's a performance. So, memorizing the lyrics is a must
Well unless you're Mariah, people don't tend to to tour for Christmas albums and litterally never have to think about the song after they leave the studio. Paul McCartney hasn't sang Wonderful Christmastime in over 40 years, but he's sang Hey Jude litterally thousands of times.

Actually what I guess happened here was that she took very long to introduce him. The arrangement cues his solo but she doesn't read the name. So he just does not begin playing. By the time he is introduced by her, there is just not enough time before she has to resume singing.
The best thing about this video is that she managed to sound immaculate despite all these unfortunate events. Patti's got 99 problems in this video, but singing ain't one!

Actually what I guess happened here was that she took very long to introduce him. The arrangement cues his solo but she doesn't read the name. So he just does not begin playing. By the time he is introduced by her, there is just not enough time before she has to resume singing.
