He is 33 years old. His team just got relegated. He was so bad at Stoke City that he got loaned out and was so bad at Newcastle that the fans chanted for his replacement. But now, Joselu is the lead striker for Real Madrid. If you are wondering how on earth that happened, so was I, so here is his story and why it actually makes sense.
He may not be in the same age profile as most of Real Madrid’s signings, but when you lose a star striker before you think they are going to leave, there are only so many options, so how about the highest-scoring Spanish player in La Liga last year? Yes, that’s Joselu, I couldn’t believe it either. He got all the way back.
Much Love,

The best part about this is I tricked you all into telling me every weird transfer in history, the stories in the comments are amazing
Loook at him nowwwww🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
Who is here after Joselu single-handedly eliminated Bayern München in the Champions League semi-final XD
Me
Me too
llego tarde, pero aquí estoy para apoyar al "gran Joselu"
Saw this video few months ago and I am so happy for this good lad when he ended up scoring 2 goals against Bayern in Semi Final and realizing his dream at Real Madrid. What a special club, welcome to the legend.
Joselu just scored 2 last minute goals against Bayern Munich to take Madrid to the Champions League Final. Insane story
"He is 33 years old. His team just got relegated. He was so bad at Stoke City that he got loaned out and was so bad at Newcastle that the fans chanted for his replacement."
He just scored two last-minute goals in the Bernabeu for his boyhood club to win a UCL semifinal.
Real Madrid's own: Don Joselu Mato 👑
This aged terribly
Here after he just singlehandedly put Madrid into the CL finals
he just scored two deciding goals today at the Champions League semi-final, Viva Joselu.
No shit
I used to sit and watch him warm-up at Newcastle, he’d hit pinpoint 40-yard diagonals repeatedly like I’ve never seen before or since, technical ability was on a different level. However, as soon as he stepped on to play, he vanished. He looked slow, weak and scared of the ball. Fast forward a few years and I’m on holiday in Spain this January and go to watch Getafe-Espanyol, and a man I watched miss easy chance after easy chance at SJP scores the Puskas award contender mentioned in the vid on his way to a near-20 goal season. So happy he’s got his career back on track, and has gotten a dream move, I wish him nothing but success!
That’s amazing
By the way from the time of the video and today, he has scored for Spain again, haha, what a great story. To be honest, he always had something in him good about football...it was more mental and now he has found the balance
@@Hispania-nz9xw😢
He’s a massive player for us, we needed a big striker for a season until we grab Haaland or Mbappe and he’s been nothing less than class for us
😮
And today he shot Real to the Champions League final
...And Joselu just made history with Real Madrid tonight
yea came here after watching him score two golazos in the CL
He just sent real madrid to the ucl final
A good example of why real life is not video games
whos here after he just put real madrid through to the UCL FINAL
All this ends with Joselu scoring two goals in the dying moments of a UCL semi final to fire Real Madrid to the final! Never give up in this life.
I'm a Deportivo La Coruña fan and there's a funny anecdote about Joselu's signing with us.
In an interview about one or two years ago, Richard Barral, sporting director at the time of Joselu's signing explained that, because Arsenal had paid the release clause of Lucas Perez so close to the transfer deadline they hadn't planned a replacement (this really explains why we were heavily mismamaged). He the explained that their main target (Alvaro Vazquez) bailed out last second, signing for Espanyol and that they contacted Joselu with less than 2 hours before the transfer deadline. According to Barral, Joselu was going around the cyber cafes in Madrid to find one open to be able to send the needed documents, and apparently they closed the loan with 5 minutes to go.
He wasn't incredible for us, but still a more than capable player and I'm glad he's done well for himself!
Cascarilleiro
by Alvaro Vazquez, you mean the Alvaro Vazquez at Pontferrada right now?
@@Number-wq3fq I believe so yes
My favourite story will always be Gervinho leaving Arsenal for Roma, allowing Lamela to leave for Spurs, allowing Bale to go to Madrid and Ozil to join Arsenal..
I never noticed that, that's crazy ! 😂😂
What in the actual hell, these are all connected? I didn't notice this... at all! damn
Cool dory bro
Bale was the first transfer to happen
A few games later and he's still doing great. He scored and assisted in all of his home games for real madrid, and is now likely a starter going forward. What a great redemption arc for him, I hope he continues to do well for the rest of his career for real madrid.
Nah. He misses clear very clear goal chances, and is very lazy and slow. He needs to go.
@@Adolfoache looks like you don't even watch him, lol. He just had a great game while you're still bitter about nothing
naahhh
He's a good player but not Madrid's level. I hope everything goes well for him and he's able to play next season for us (it's only 1,5M, not a lot considered how much Bellingham costs), but it's not clear at this moment what will happen.
What is clear though, is that if he comes back to Espanyol, a lot of teams would want to have his services in the league.
Real madrid is not for players where you can say ''still doing great ''
its the best team in the world , we need soldiers that can fight on the pitch
no need for lazy old guys
This video might be about to get a sudden spike in views lol
who's here after the double to send Real in the finals
It actually makes sense when you think about, he’s a homegrown talent.. he adds to the homegrown talent for the UCL
It has a lot of similarities to Aritz Aduriz's last 8 seasons at Athletic Bilbao after signing for 4 million euros signing at the age of 30 back in 2011. Joselu fills a homegrown talent slot and much like Aduriz continued to improve well into his 30s.
Edit: Athletic Bilbao didn't need the homegrown talent quite as much as they needed striker depth at that time and got a guy who they thought could start, took the job and then started potting 20 goals in a season.
As is Fran Garcia who they've also signed this summer
@@Maffchops that’s right, which makes more sense when the club wasn’t sure if they would be keeping players like Nacho, Vazquez, Carvajal - all homegrown players
@@Eibarwoman and after Benz left, RM definitely needed a striker.. I don’t think like Vini and Rodrygo alone are going to provide enough goals this season for it to be a successful season

What a transfer after that Ucl performance 😉
For Newcastle, I remember it was a mid week game and we were 1-0 down and we got a pen and Joselu stepped up to take it and the whole crowd groaned expecting him to miss it and.... He did, and that sealed his fate.
lmfao why's this so funny
good thing he left that small club

And then, we had Martin Braithwaite somehow signing for Barcelona at a cost of 18 million Euros to score a total of 5 league goals in 2 seasons.
Not just 18mil they signed him out of the window as injury replacement from Leganes, while leganes were not allowed to replace him outside transfer window.

Not so weird after today
Who is here after his brace against bayern to send madrid to the UCL finals✋🏻
Speaking as a Newcastle fan, Joselu wasn't like quite a few other players on that team at that time: he gave his all throughout the time he was on the pitch. As Rafa Benitez said, he had grit and determination. Those kinda things would've been amazing in this Newcastle side now. But seeing him now at Real and playing for Spain, it's a great turnaround for him.
He might just be the greatest player of Real Madrid of all time! :P
There is a club in portugal (Os Belenenses) who got relegated to the LAST division and is now in the 2nd with 5 consecutive promotions while they were rebuilding, its clear this is a story you should make a video on. Also, there is a player there ( My brother ) who has been there for the rebuild since the last division and is now on the 2nd with the club! André Serra has been one of those club legends that only exist on FM! He could make history and be the only player to ever get promoted 6 times with the same club! Zealand please make a vid on this!
I would watch that!
Yeah! @Zealand make the vid!
Make It happen!
carrega, belenenses e leiria para o ano na primeira
omg pls
His journey is stranger than fiction
I think there is a lot of confusion about this transfer, so lets clear it up. He is not RMs new number 9, he is a backup that adds tactical variablity to the team. RM changed formation compared to last season, they basically run a 4312 now with Bellingham as a 10 and Rodrygo and Vini up top. Vini and Rodrygo are allowed to drift wide , when this happens Bellingham makes the deep runs into the number 9 position. Its quite flexible and a great fit for the team. Joselu as a traditional 9 is great to have in case of injuries or if the new tactic is struggling against a specific defensive approach.
Well then.
he currently has the same goals than Lewandowski in La Liga this season and 2 assits... very motivating story!
Funnily enough, the same thing happened in Serie A, with Inter signing Marko Arnautovic 13 years after his last appearence with the club.
The story is very similar to Joselu's, they both played with stoke too.
Arnourtovic is actually a good striker he put up good numbers for Stoke West Ham and Bologna.
@@emilfrederiksen.1622 If Arnautovic were half as good as he thinks he is, he'd be twice as good as he actually is.
@@emilfrederiksen.1622joselu actually good for Espanyol
@@DrZaius3141Ten years ago, you'd have been right. Now he's a decent player with reasonable character.
The striker market is absolutely dire at the moment. So a player in rich form as a cheap stop gap makes perfect sense.
United tried it with Weghorst but forgot about the "rich form" part.
Nah he was on rich form with Besiktas
He played very well in Germany ( 41 Games, 25 Goals) in his last full Season at Wolfsburg . Was shit at Burnley, but who wasnt? They were complete shit that Season having a 9 Goals in all competitions Top Goalscorer. Went to Istanbul and bagged 8 in 16.
So he was in good form for the 2 last functioning teams he played for and in great form for the dutch international team. Its just that Man Utd have a tendency to turn decent players into rubbish, see Sancho or Maguire.
There is a whole world out of players out there, maybe if clubs didn’t pay 100ms for 1 player they would have enough to buy someone else
@@WizoIstGotthe was great on FM22 as well (before the winter update where he went to Burnley). You could buy him for about 15-20m and he'd get about 20-25 goals a season for a couple of years and then someone like Liverpool or Man Utd would offer 40-60m for him. He was a great player to get as he'd get goals instantly and raise enough funds with his sale to buy someone even better.
From what I remember of his real life stats i thought he was actually a decent goalscorer
@@batuhansahin6757 Scoring 8 in besiktas is kind of different to being 3rd in La Liga.
This is a very underrated signing.
Joselu is super popular in spain and is selling loads of t-shirts now that he has signed for madrid.
Madrid struggles a lot against low blocks and joselu is the perfect striker for those type of defenses
the perfect replacement for benzema imo. he has such immaculate positioning he always finds free space in the box
@@scegex6500wtf 😂😂 dude can’t finish to save his life. He’s slow, lazy and scores 1/20 clear goal chances. He’s not good man. I watch my team play every time and pisses me off when they put him in. He’s so slow
@@Adolfoache i bet you feel very dumb rn
When strikers get good after 30 years of age, that means they are really good. I don't say it's easy for younger strikers to get 20+ goals, but a lot do. However to make 20+ goals at 30+ years, that means something. Not only he would have the technical skills, but also the experience that a young player would never have. Joselu is the perfect, perfect substitute 9 for Real, one of the best, if not the best, available at that point.
Man is actually Ballin this season he has 14 goals and 4 assists I think
Total 22 G/A
For Madrid 16 G/A
He will easily get 35 G/A in all competitions
@@zarathos630 he will if Carlo ancelotti plays him often
Annnnnd , he just missed a pen
@@Greyy66doesn’t matter
This is a nice video but Joselu wasn't signed to be Real Madrid's main striker. He is greatly loved by the spanish fans and that's why there are lots of memes about him going to Madrid and people chanting for him to wear the number 9. However he was never signed to be a regular starter, he is more like a patch while the team looks for a big signing and a the typical striker to enter in minute 70 to score some goals against a tired defense
Keep talking crap! JOSÉLU HERO!!
Explained very well today indeed.
Really happy his career has come full circle. I will admit as a Newcastle United fan there were many many days I sighed seeing his name in the starting lineup. He seemed like he was just the next mid striker passing through the Cashley era, like Luuk de jong and Emmanuel Riviere. As someone else mentioned he often looked shot of confidence in matched but he was never one to blame for a lack of effort. Incredible to see what he's achieved since back in a better environment, hope it only gets better for him
Story has Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting vibes about it (another former Stoke player)
the 8mil for Joselu is actually still the highest amount for a sold player at Hannover 96. It surprised me a lot when he suddenly returned to the center of attention.
Anyone here after real madrid dramatic comeback and Joselu scored two important goal against Bayern Munich ❤❤
12 december 2023: Joselu champions league game MVP

Guess what happened today Hahhaha
I used to have him on my FM team about two years ago and he became my teams all time top scorer. What a beautiful story for Joselu, staying determined and committed pays off.
Great video👍Finally someone recognized Joselu the GOAT🐐
Definition of “but can he do it on a rainy night in stoke”
Hope Joselu’s story can inspire more 30+ yo players to raise to the top. There are many underrated 30+ yo players deserve a chance to play for top clubs.
its 2024 after he came back against bayern😂
The major difference between hazard at Real Madrid and Joselu at Real Madrid is that, one is trying his best at the time of retirement but the other one is already retired due to lack of training and fitness. It sums it up.
Why is this strange?
Guy got 16 goals with espanyol last season, he's experienced and a former madrid player. Makes sense tbh
Because he used to be terrible lol
Secondly, Joselu seems to be on an Aritz Aduriz-type late blooming trajectory where he finally has put it together in recent years.
@@coxxey6673he played for Madrid twice that means he class
And he scored the winning goal against Sociedad🔥
Joselu is pure example of old school 9’s!! Tapping in impossible chances, delivering shots, forwarding headers with ease left, right and back, always in scoring chances frequently like twice as much than any striker! Unfortunately latest football stats spoiled our expectations with efficiency close to 100%, so this kind of ballers getting fade away! His overall contribution is priceless, team player after all!
Joselu just scored a double today, February 1, 2024, against Getafe playing for Real Madrid, and has scored in the League and Champions League, great signing
There's a trend that center forwards enter their prime in their 30s and peaking around 33, 34. Really interesting. Probably has to do with instincts and composure, that get better at older ages.
As a Deportivo de la Coruña fan who saw random Joselu matches for half my life I think it is 50% experience, 40% hard work and 10% luck what makes Joselu good now. Also there is quite a lack of good veteran strikers all around the world
Edit: Don't know why it was hated at the time in England, loved the time he was loaded in Dépor, one of our best attacker players maybe blind scouters
He's lucky - he's having a rich vein of form late in his career at a time when Real Madrid want a striker for one season. Good for him!
I'm really happy for him. Not gonna act like I've been calling him world class for years or anything, he just seemed like a sound guy who was always getting disrespected. Good luck to Joselu!!
but my friend, Joselu he is the substitute of Mariano, not benzema. And he is doing great in that aspect :D
And that's why we need a first-class striker
Joselu is a 2nd choice striker for Madrid
who is the first choice then
@@yungtrashlordThe formation has been changed. Rodrygo and Bellingham are filling the gap.

Joselu's transfer isn't weird lol. He's one of our own and his profile is one we've been missing in this squad for years. Look at his assist for the goal Bellingham scored yesterday, that's why we brought him back.
The purpose of most football content is to educate Prem fans' lack of knowledge of anything that goes on anywhere else. Let them call our boy weird, we know how good he is. Hala Madrid.
man Joselu's career journey is one hell of a trivia question, I'm surprised I haven't seen it pop up more lol
Joselu has been one of my personal favourite players since the 13/14 season, mostly because he was class on fifa for me but another player who was in a similar sort of category was Franco Di Santo. I hope this season is good for Joselu and I am going to try get a jersey by the end of the season with his name on it as I have been saying for like 10 years XD
He sucks. I watch All my team games(Real Madrid) and it makes me mad when they put him in. Because he slow lazy and can’t even finish clear goal chances. He needs to go. Have you even watched full Madrid games? Or you just base
Your player facts of fifa ??
Stoke fan here. Joselu was never really given a fair chance with us. Was never given a consistent run which was a shame but glad to see where his career has gone.
Joselu Mato is a God's plan. I subscribed you just because Joselu. Respect for you just because you acknowledge him. ❤
He just scored a brace against Bayern last night! Chances are Joselu's going to be an European Champion this year!
Smart of Joselu not taking #9 because that would bring him a lot of pressure
As a stoke fan I was quite unhappy that we sold him to Newcastle as the year we did he was only player to score in our pre-season campaign, in which he scored 4 goals. But anyway its great to see him flying again
In 2019, Newcastle sold Joselu. In 2018, they sold Ivan Toney. Not exactly the best club for an improving striker.
You must be VERY happy about this video today. REAL v Bayern. Subscribed
Your pronunciation of "Bruchhagen" was actually almost perfect, the only correction I can offer being that the emphasis is on the first syllable.
Reminds me a lot of Füllkrug, also a late bloomer, including a late nomination for the national team, two years after having a late start in 2nd Bundesliga.
This video is AMAZING. Great work bro
Who is here after he scored a brace against bayern munich in a ucl semifinal?
what a story.
Real Madrid have only signed 11 players over the age of 30 in their entire history. Incredible.
Really? Wow.
Love how you mentioned Stevenage as their my home town club and we are doing really good right now
There may be a striker special sauce for late blooming forwards - Dario Hübner, Teddy Sheringham, Geoff Horsfield and Ian Wright all come to mind
I love a come up story like this amazing video
ZEALAND!! You HAVE to do a video on Pepelu's transfer from Levante to Valencia!! It's spicy. Levante the perfect save idea for FM24
I support Newcastle since the days of Ben Arfa, Cisse and Cabaye. He was the worst striker the club had in those 12 years
Some players work in some leagues and their style. One League's flop is another league's top scorer!
Seems to me that he fits La Liga better, whether it is the reception or the confidence or the playing style. Mental aspect is just as important as the rest because some players are just not gonna adapt to different leagues for one reason or another. Joselu seems to be the case.
This aged greatly..A top signing for us Real Madrid fans..didn't expect such performances..Dude has been awesome..Whenerver he is on the pitch Madrid create more chances... Not to mention his clutch goals..dude gave us more than what that Mariano mf gave us in 4 years..
Its the Real Madrid effect man! They are the gods of this game.
The first I learned of joselu's renaissance was when he started for Spain when Scotland beat them 3-0, me naively remembering him from his Newcastle time as someone who gave everything but didn't bag many goals and thought 'Good lord, is He the best Spain have? No wonder Scotland tore them apart!' but I'm really glad he's turned things around - some times move just don't work out and England's leagues are always more physical than many expect until too late (Bojan's time at Stoke another example), and good luck to him as a Galactico! I wonder how bizarre it would be if Newcastle draw Real in the CL group this season & see Joselu start against us...
I am looking forward to this matchup as a Madrid fan...I want it to be a beautiful story for Joselu This time around
Scotland-Spain score was 2-0 not 3-0, a shame nevertheless that will be repaid tomorrow with interests
I really liked Joselu when he firstly joined Real Madrid, he was so good in both Castilla and in the first team. I was very surprised his career was going so bad and I'm really happy to have him back at Real Madrid. He's a very valuable player for this team, because he's not complaining that he's usually starts from the bench and scores pretty regularly (goal every 121').
There is one little detail that people tend to overlook. He’s always lethal against the best teams in La Liga. In fact, if I’m not mistaken he scored against Real Madrid in almost every game he’s played against them and they might be his favorite opponents 🤣
Been a believer and supporter of Joselu since 2015 when he was in Hannover 96, really good player who was just unlucky
Was really happy for him when he went to the prem and it was unfortunate what happened to him at stoke
Super happy for Joselu he deserves everything that’s happened to him this year
Great story. You love to see it.
Great analysis
as a Zimbabwean glad to see you wear a Zimbabwean football team jersey
Luis Figo was a midfielder not a forward, and btw the plan was always to bring him to be a backup for Karim after Mariano and Hazard left the club but Karim didn't renew his contract and went to KSA so he became our only striker.
Great review a career similar to that of my compatriot Choupo Moting
