    This is the 50th episode of the Expedition Log Series! ExLog has come so far, and I have all of you to thank! In this ExLog, we will be touring the wreckage of the Euclid Square Mall on the last night it stood on Earth. The bulldozers were ready to go, and the next day when I drove out West for the next place, Euclid was gone. This video is a collaborative effort where I use the footage of Johnny Joo and Jef Scharf to give the full picture and history of this now extinct dead mall.

    The mall was doing well till 92. Gangs of people would loiter in the middle of the mall. Not buying anything and detour paying costumers. Soon fights started breaking out amongst the loitering people. They closed the arcade after a fight broke out. Why risk getting assaulted. People began leaving euclid around this time also. I left 10 years ago. This video brings me back to being a kid. Walking the mall with my parents and siblings. I bought my funeral shoes for my father at florsiam. That was about the last time I went there. God I miss my home town.

    I’m crying. The last great attempt at salvaging Euclid, led by Rosemary and built on faith was unexpected. I hope she finds peace knowing that 1000 jobs are there now. The research, the provenance are enthralling. I need to go back and look at the dating site again to ground myself. Amazing photo captures. Great job.

    February 8, 2020 Edit: I spoke with the family of Rosemary Luksic, and they are absolutely wonderful people. However, I found some incorrect information when I was researching for this video, and her grandchildren corrected this. Rosemary passed away in December of 2016, not September as I stated in the video.
    Thank you all so much for putting up with me for 50 episodes! This ExLog is my favorite, yet...and the story of the Euclid Square Mall is absolutely unique. It's full of hope, but ultimately heartbreaking. Rosemary Luksic made this mall thrive in the best way she knew how, and did so for the last few years of her life. Once again, thank you all, especially to my patrons who put the gas in Nightwing's tank to get out on expedition. You all rock.

    I worked at Euclid Square Mall From September 1985 until 1991. I also worked at Randall Park Mall from November 1982 until September 1985. Euclid Mall was a wonderful place to work! It had a wonderful York Steak House, a Stride Rite Store, Hough Bakeries, Bresler's Ice Cream, The Gift Garden, Burrow's, Burger King, Arby's, Dillards(Higbee's) and The May Company(Kaufmann's then Macy's now) and many more stores including Karmelkorn Shoppe. Also outside were banks, CVS, Red Lobster, Toys are US! It was a different time and the Euclid businesses gave out Mall gift certificates and I loved seeing those come in! Now it's a Amazon center! Also there was Twin Value and Kmart....all gone!!!!!😥😥😥

    • @lbgrrl
      @lbgrrl Před rokem +1

      I worked there too (May Company). Twin Valu was part of the problem. So sketchy! When that junk store opened, it was like all the criminals in Cleveland showed up. And security wasn’t good at the mall by the 90s. Crime killed this mall imo.

    • @jodywight3948
      @jodywight3948 Před rokem

      @@lbgrrl I loved Euclid Mall because it was smaller. Sometimes crime does appear on the increase, but so much closing and leaving of the industrial economy at that time also hurt the mall. I always thought a food court surrounding York Steak House would have helped the mall. Still was a great place to work!!!!

  • @KamenKami
    @KamenKami Před 4 lety +23

    I posted this in another dead mall video, but the point still remand.
    Why not allow people to live in the dead malls? Remodel some of the stores into contemporary looking apartments or condos, and allow the tenets to wander the main halls to talk with their neighbors or have a gathering with friends and family. One wing of the mall will be used for homes, another area other for offices and some local businesses like food stores or restaurants. Hell place a Starbucks in one and many people would be lining up to live in the mall. You can live the AESTHETICS.

    • @jenniferlunberg1471
      @jenniferlunberg1471 Před 3 lety +6

      Maybe it has something to do with how zoning in the US works? From what I've gathered, there are no shops in residential areas and vice versa. Mixed zoning would be required.

I grew up in the 80's, a good portion of my teenage years were spent in malls, working, watching movies, hanging out with friends. It's comforting to know, that there are individuals out there who have an appreciation and respect for Malls and other places of Urban History, keep up the good work.

    These video are so amazing to me. I'm stationed on Guam right now and due to the booming tourist industry, all the mall or shopping centers do very well here. We even still have a Kmart here. But even back in my dad's town, the mall there is still doing very well, although the Sears closed and is now a Dick's Sporting Goods. It's sad. I appreciate your commentary with the history of each place. Thanks, Sal!

    I worked at the May Company store there in the 80s. It was a really nice store, with parquet floors and a nice restaurant. The mall began a slide in the 90s when a woman was killed in a carjacking. Everyone quit going there because of actual and perceived crime. A cheap discount store opened nearby (Twin Valu ) which attracted more crime. Euclid also began a slow decline. Really sad.

    This used to be such a nice mall. I remember Christmastime there with Santa. They had a pet store too with kittens and puppies for sale. I loved this place. So sad that it turned into such an eyesore.

    Unfortunately, since Mrs. Luksic went to be with god on December 6th, 2016 the mall lost such a great person it had. Thankful this video that was taken will be a memory of her forever.

    Thank you Sal for the wonderful videos so far. I'm trying to visit as many malls as I can that you featured, 4 so far. Hope you visit The Mall of Monroe in Michigan someday. That is definitely a dead mall. Cheers.

      I was there the first or second day that mall opened I think in the late 70's . I think I have a slide I shot just after sunset someplace. It was a cute small town mall, sort of a shame though that sears moved from downtown Monroe into the mall starting downtown monroe's retail decline.

    Awesome work! One suggestion for a future episode: What dead mall Expedition Log Series would be complete without the most infamous dead mall of them all: ROLLING. ACRES. MALL. Need I say more? The mall itself is long demolished now but there's plenty of footage from its years of abandonment and throughout the demolition process...

    I feel the Old Drew Carey Show Joke that is Still True is Euclid is always the Bane of Bad Deals or Deals that Later Go Bad. I think this was also a tagline of a Couple of Drew Carey Show Episodes where Lewis and Oswald always had a habit and/or their relatives had a habit, usually bad of falling in and out of Career Jobs, because that is Northeast Ohio, mind you, in short summary.
