There was never such thing as a "Byzantines". Although we used the term "Roman" neither the western or eastern Roman empire was really Roman. Not culturally, not linguistically and not demographically. They just adopted the term Roman to describe non-Roman empires as a form of prestige and to consolidate power. In fact, after Turks conquered the eastern Roman even Mehmed II and later Ottoman sultans insisted they were the "real" Roman emperors.
Use of these terms is purely political ideology at work (including the present) not actual history. The term "Byzantine" in particular was later used as a sly way to detach Greeks not only from Roman imperial authority but ancient Greek history.
