Glad this is the long version a lot of Lukather's solo was removed for the radio version. Agreed he is a very underrated guitarist despite playing on over 3000 albums plus his Toto Commitments. Ritchie is a very underrated singer and composer from the Commodore to his solo career. He co wrote We are the World with Michael Jackson

As a guitar enthusiast I might be able to bring another story many may not have heard.
The solo at the very end is known as the Zero Take solo because Steve Lukather asked Lionel to play the backing track for him so he could work out the changes for his recorded take. What Steve didn't realize was that Lionel recorded this rehearsal. He liked what he heard so much that when Steve said he was ready for the first take Lionel said he already had exactly what he was looking for. Steve attempted to get Lionel to give him another shot but he refused.
This is one of the many reasons Steve "Luke" Lukather is so respected in the musicians' community. A true legend!

Hello Phil & Sam, I'm glad you enjoyed to song by Lionel Richie. Ritchie's sound changed from his time in the band "The Commodores" his early music had a very funky danceable sound. And songs such as "Brick House" and "Machine Gun" demonstrates this. However, over time Ritchie began to sing more romantic-style and easy listening ballad style songs such as "Easy" and Three Times A Lady" he was also known for his versatility as an artist. His ability to blend different musical styles set him apart and allowed him to reach a wide range of people. Here's the song that Sam was referring to, if interested. "Lionel Ritchie - All Night Long Live 1984 Can't Slow Down Tour" (by the channel: 1980Triumph)" This was so much fun thanks for sharing. And I really enjoyed rocking with you two.

That 🔥 guitar work was Steve Lukather of the band Toto and renowned session musician. You won't hear a guitar solo as fiery as the outro of this song on every Lionel Richie song. The story from Steve is that he was jamming at the end to have fun and didn't realize tape was still rolling and they would actually end up using it for the song, but they loved it and kept it in. I mean, come on who the hell wouldn't like something that freaking awesome! Keep Steve's name in the back of your mind along with the other members of Toto as well. Though not always credited they were all stellar session musicians and are on so much music of the late 70s and throughout the 80s. Especially the late great drummer Jeff Porcaro. Great reaction! I watch this on a different channel just a day or two ago and was disappointed as it seemed to a radio edit without the extended solo. I HATE that! Michael Jackson's thriller album music was primarily Toto. Not just playing, but some of the writing as well.

When I was a boy in the 80's, my mother and I used to watch a show called Friday Night Videos in which they would show the latest videos but also pit them against each other ala American Idol style. Fans would watch the two featured artists' videos back to back and then call in to vote on which they liked better. One night, this video was featured versus Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Needless to say, poor Lionel didn't stand a chance, but this song definitely left an indelible mark on the 80's Synth/Funk/R&B scene and for a while was quite popular. One of the things that made it so good, was that it arrived during a time when Mr. Ritchie was starting to infuse Latin percussion into his sound by way of homage to his Latino heritage. He was also beginning to tap into the early Hip Hop scene by featuring break-dancers in many of his videos.

BTW- fun fact- Nichole Ritchie, Lionel's adopted daughter, is the biological niece of another 80's Latin Synth/Funk/R&B icon. That artist is known best as Sheila E., former protege' and ex-lover to Prince and the daughter of famous Latin percussionist Pete Escovedo.

This was off one of my favorite albums ever that I got on the bmg 12 albums for a penny deal if you're old enough to remember cassette tapes....it was a huge album from I think 83/84 and was up for grammys and music awards against purple rain from prince and thriller by Michael Jackson, It had this song, penny lover, hello, stuck on you, all night long, etc. I always look at this album as being a pinnacle of American music, because it was at the peak of 80s musically and when you listen to the lyrics and music, it was at point when I think People had the most balance between work and leisure and the most time to indulge in being carefree... really good songs and subjects about being in love, living carefree, etc.

Lionel Richie, solo or with The Commodores, simply had a silky, yet driving voice. Top shelf production and session musicians. I warn you about going down the rabbit hole of R&B. Countless groups and solo singers on the scene before. Motown is a very real thing. The label, Motown, is like Kleenex is to tissues. A genre that can truly touch a soul going through daily life.

Hi Phil & Sam! I'm a new subscriber and have been enjoying your reactions. Glad to see you're reacting to Lionel Richie. He has a deep catalog of music. I had the pleasure of attending Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University, with he and the Commodores in the 60's. He is from Tuskegee and my wife who I met in college is from there and grew up with Lionel. He and the Commodores played some of the local clubs before they made it big. And Lionel didn't sing back then. They signed with Motown in 72 and opened for The Jackson Five. After college I lived in Tuskegee for about 10 years and they were still living there as well. Really good times back then. Other songs I'd suggest are Easy, Zoom, Three Times a Lady, Sail On, Brickhouse, Slippery When Wet, Sweet Love, and Still.
