  • I always get asked if petunias can be propagated in late summer even though they have blooms on them and can they be overwintered. The short answer is yes! This is going to be the first video in a series that shows me rooting cuttings of petunias with blooms and then overwintering them so that we can take more cuttings next spring and save all kinds of money.

    I don't know why I never did this before. I knew petunias can root any time. I have always done the seed method. Save the seeds and start again next year. Problem with that is a lot of these special petunias are hybrids, and the seeds are not true to the original colour. So I must try this method. Thanks, Mike.

    I love this! I’m just hardening off a whole batch of stuff I’ve over wintered (Southern Hemisphere) that I can put out now it’s spring. We’ve had a few false starts but next week I can finally start to clear out the 14 trays I have stashed around the house. I can’t go anywhere now without taking cuttings and thanks to your tips and tricks, I’ve been quite successful with most of them.

      I kept them in the garage by a shaded window to encourage roots, not blooms , also due to a lack of space inside. In February when I brought them inside and added heat and more light , they began putting on a lot of growth from which I was able to take more cuttings.

    "The rooting medium is not magic, guys, I am!" LOL Well, hello there 'Magic Mike'! Sorry, but that's one I couldn't resist. We've had some really hard killing frosts here already, 21 degrees Fahrenheit for overnight lows. However, I did order lots of different varieties of seeds today! This is the time of year that I check for clearance sales in the garden centers. I'm always on the look-out for potting mix in the large bags. I purchased 74 (that's all they had) of the compressed bricks of potting mix (they each rehydrate to 2.25 cubic ft.) and I only paid $1each. I'm getting ready for next spring.

    Thanks Mike. I was successful with probably 80% of my cuttings so I trust I can do this. HOWEVER , I have a new kitten and she's not kenneled 😐 I work nights and apparently, so does she. I came home one morning to little plant carcasses all over the place. Petunias, calibrachoa and coleus. I have a few survivors left to work with, including two chunks of the original petunia plants, in case my dormant ones don't survive, that's producing new growth and 7 calibrachoa cuttings looking strong. Three variety of coleus is down to one so that sucks. She jumped roughly 4 feet to get to them. I did not see that coming 😕
    I chose these particular petunias because they're not only beautiful rich colors, (deep royal purple and black cherry), they also had an amazing scent the rest didn't have. I harvested seeds from everything but you know that's a crap shoot there. Keep in mind this was just a drill that I didn't expect to work so well. My thumb is more lime then green 😁 Anyways, I'm carrying on. They're now ontop of the fridge when I'm not around. If she makes that jump, I'm in trouble, she just turned 5 months. 😬

    Not sure when freezes start I your area, but in Phoenix AZ, zone 9b, I’ve grown beautiful petunias from september through May, outdoors in a pot by my front door in a sheltered area with afternoon shade starting around 1 or 1:30pm ... never covered them during freezes which we have maybe five or six (I think) times during winter, at night ... they looked great the whole time ... they were the purple veined Bordeaux but not the self cleaning, I had to dead head them ... at any rate, I can confirm that they will grow in winter with light and if you keep them from freezing ... I’m going to try different petunia seeds (not self cleaning) every month in Phoenix, outdoors, starting first part of March to see if I can start new petunias every month in my area, in my Arizona greenhouse... I expect some varieties will do better than others.

    Hi Mike, does it really matter having the cover to protect the humidity? I have tried to propagate a bunch of petunia cuttings, the first batch, i put them under a tree shade and the second batch i put it indoor. Both of them were soaked well with plant starter solution, before planting and after planting into the soil, but all of them were dead and rotten in just a matter of a week. I am not sure whether it is because i do not put the cover, the soil was too wet, or the quality of the cuttings was not good?

    I propagated supertunias last winter in my basement under LED shop lights. I took cuttings off of cuttings, and had a lot of flowers. I put a lot in the garden, and I had enough to give away. I just took cuttings from this year’s garden a few days ago for next spring. I hope I have the same amount of success I had last year.I got this idea from your other petunia video. Where did you get your propagation tote? Thanks, Mike.

    Looks like I need to buy a bigger house😅. I already repotted and took inside some blooming annuals (zone 4) and we just got hit with a snow storm (Manitoba). I thought about your petunia video and taking some inside, but I don't have the $ right now for all the grow lights, a shelf to store them all winter long. I'm limited to light from my windows.
    Snows is melting again, petunias are still alive, but not very nice anymore, so I think I'll save myself the trouble for now.
    I will however take cuttings from supertinuas that I'll buy as early as possible next spring and keep them in the window for a month or so... (This year we had frost till 1st week of june, so there's some time to grow indoors before it's warm enough.

      @@MikeKincaid79 Ok so my first bunch failed. I didn't have a grow light and they weren't getting all that much light, so that may have been the issue. So I bought a grow light, I've taken more cuttings and they're back in the clear tupperware with the lid on. I used the grow light the first day and it looks like it got too hot in there. How long should I leave the grow light on, and what intensity? I don't want to burn them up into little crispy critters. Thanks!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před rokem

      The downside to seedlings is that you will lose your varieties. The blooms will not be the same as the plants you bought. You would have to take cuttings to get clones of the parent plants and get the same blooms. You can do seeds but start them early on, like in January. I have a video series about this here: czcams.com/video/7eEOgKVySGg/video.html
