  • "The Samoa Island of Apolima was to a large extent a natural fortress. It is in fact an extinct volcano crater with steep inaccessible sides; but in one place the cup has been broken away, sa as to form a difficult and dangerous opening. The people use to stretch a rope across the narrow opening; and this was drawn tigh o,n an enmy canoe attemting to enter, its occupiers being capsized into the water, and thus easily disposed of. The interior basin was well watered and most prolific."

Thank you for posting! My wife and I were able to visit Apolima for the first time together last summer to visit the place of my chief title and visit family. Did you take the hike up to the lighthouse? Sa'u Stephen Petaia
