    I stumbled upon a loquat tree hiking here in socal. The fruit looked possibly edible so I attempted to identify it and took the risk. That moment first trying it is probably one of the most memorable seconds I have to date. I felt like I'd discovered forbidden fruit in the garden of eden and I was not sorry for the knowledge 😁 I want a forest of Loquats and to eat nothing but fruit for the entire month of April. I count down the months till Loquat season every year 💛💛💛

    Thanks for making this video. I want to get one in my yard, I just need more shade in my yard before I kill another one. Some of my trees are making a nice microclimate but I’ll wait after this summer to start digging a hole big enough for amendments and mulch.

      I like your information about loquat! I bought one from here (Globe AZ). One night the wild pigs broken our wood fence and ruined it! But they ate all the leaves and left the root! After that my friend gave me three small loquat from California. We fixed the wood fence and growing loquat different parts again. The weather is better today and I trying to grow more back yard! I had this fruits in Taiwan when I grew up! The javelina always around our neighborhood and ate our cactus all the time. So summer time need twice water per day (above 90~100F)? Thanks!

    In 2019 I had a loquat harvest in Germany on my planted since 2013. This year I briefly wrapped them with air cushion film over the winter and put in a floor heating cable. It looks like some fruits will stay on it, so that there can be a harvest in summer this year in August.

    Lol okay well here is a funny story i guess..my work has one growing in their backyard. And everyone there wasn't sure if they were poisonous(of course its always better to be safe than sorry)... Later we found out it was a loquat and not some random tree lol i love how juicy loquats are and they "seem to be" very resilient here in northern California (no snow.)
    If it wasnt for their big seeds i would have been juicing them! The mild taste is perfect on its own. Anyways... thats my loquat story.
    Keep up the good work Shamus!

    I have a container growing Golden Nugget and a Yehuda (zone 7a NYC area) both fruiting in a south facing window thermostat set at 50 F but more around 60, one in a 5 gallon and the other 7 gallon. I keep mine well watered, heaving wood chip mulched, underpotted or tight, and feed constantly w whatever is easy and convenient: urine (very salt tolerant species, believe it has been irrigated with seawater in Israel LOL), horse manure (summer and late spring during growth spurts), whatever is heavy and strong. very pretty tree and very strong grower. Absolutely beautiful in the landscape there is no more regal looking plant. have a Christmas too in a 5 gallon that is still not yet fruiting maybe 2 years from the graft or so? Recommended.

    I love loquats I wish we could grow em here in the UK

    • @XoroksComment
      @XoroksComment Před 4 lety

      You can grow them in the UK, they are hardy to about -12°C. They are commonly planted as ornamental trees. As they flower in the fall and winter months, the flowers freeze at -4°C, so you won't get fruit except in mild winters. If you want to attempt growing them for fruit, pick a very late flowering variety and put them in a protected location in the yard (e.g. against a south-facing wall).

      @@iiTzHaroon Considering that I know of trees that fruit in Germany, I think they can. It requires a mild winter, a protected location and the right variety. Specifically, a late variety.

    In order to obtain larger fruit, it is recommended to dilute the amount of the fruit at a relatively early stage and prevent the tree from wasting the growth energy on too much fruit(hence mostly seeds and less meat).
    A mature tree reaches a height of about four and a half meters and a width of about four meters. After the fruit picking, you should prune the loquat tree to make it easier for the tree for the next period of fruit growth.
    also, It is important to avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization on loqats

    That's bro. I think you just give me what I need it. I just bought one about a week ago. It's about 3 feet tall. And I put it in the back yard. And we been getting a lot of rain in spring here Arkansas. But the leaves are dying and falling off. So I don't know what to do. So I've been looking around for answers.

    Are seedlings true to seed?

  • @hamlulit
    @hamlulit Před 5 lety

    I heard that the seed started, bear fruit after 6-7 tears and the grafted after 2 and you know what you are getting. best would be a seed planted in the ground and later grafted that way U get a skookum set of roots and fast known fruit

    Is it ok to cover the fruit in paper bags once they start to ripen to keep the birds offM will the ripped the same?

    • @DelightfulDissident
      @DelightfulDissident Před 5 lety +3

      I've seen people do this seemingly with success, however I'd be worried about the foliage under the paper not getting enough light. I use "reusable" bulk grocery bags that are made of very fine mesh with a pull tie. The mesh is so fine that even once the fruit began to turn yellow, you couldn't really see it. This past year as soon as the fruit began to turn light green I wrapped all the bundles, tied loosely, and it worked perfectly through rain and wind and all my fruit was perfectly ripened without a scratch nor a bird dropping. The surrounding foliage was unaffected as well. Happy mulching!!

    • @DovidM
      @DovidM Před rokem

      Dwarf loquats are grafted on quince trees. You can prune a standard ungrafted loquat tree to keep it low. This makes harvesting easier as well as allows you to put bird netting over the tree. The net reduces the amount of damage the birds can do to the fruit as it ripens.
