  • We harvested cassava from our own garden in Kumasi. One of the great things that comes with living in Ghana is the ability to plant good foods in your own garden. Due to the fertility of the soil almost anything you plant comes up nicely. We are indeed blessed!

    The cassava root can make so many different things, cassava bread, cassava bread with sweet coconut inside, starch, cous-cous, and an Amerindian food coloring called cassareep. The cassareep can be added to any meat of your choice, and we use it to make a special Xmas dish called pepper pot.

    You need to do some composting and add it to the soil to improve it. Use leaves, vegetable skins etc t9 make a compost pile. You can compost in a bin plastic bin also. Gradually you can improve the soil in your garden. You can ask people to donate their cassava peel and plantsinand yam skins etc to make compost. Then add it to small sections of the garden especially at the root of your plants.
    Dig the hole to plant tour cassava or seeds and fill it with compost and soil.

    I like cassava. It’s one of our tribal stable foods here in Uganda for the Lango tribe. I like it cos you can eat it in various capacities like boiled and eat it with peanut paste, fried and mingled. Although recently with the introduction of GMO modified cassava which rots in the garden just after 1 year unlike the traditional one which usually takes more than 3 years in the garden without rotting. This has made people to look for alternative stable foods. I don’t know about you guys over there in Ghana how is it

    • @FamilyByNature
      @FamilyByNature  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching! I think cassava is very popular in many African countries. It can be put to many uses as you rightly said so it’s great. I don’t know much about the GMO modified cassava. In our case we didn’t even use any fertiliser and it came out nicely. The soil is very good.

    Use a hoe not shovel or panga 😂. Also add water overnight as too dry. You can dry some of the harvest and pound for fufu or fry for snack. So happy to see dad showing the kids and wife how it’s done 👍🏿👌🏿. The children are attentive and well mannered and peaceful and humble and interested in their African heritage. Kudos to the parents even though they are from different races, they are a great example of how similar we all are if we work together. So proud of you especially the father for relocating the family back to Africa and providing leadership as the head of the family. Cheers to the mother too as she’s the one who provided the nurturing. Thanks 👏🏿. To preserve water, you should use the rain water that you trapped via the roof and water tank. Can’t wait to see the yam harvest. Cut the cassava on the grass 😂 so no need for sweeping. Dad doesn’t crack 😂😂😂😂. Scrapping cassava after peeling removes the bitter taste of fresh cassava- also good to leave in water to get the starch out.

    Next time, don't attempt two cassavas at the same time. You never know just one could be enough for the family. And if that happens, the other may go waste. Just so you know. Also you have to attempt to uproot it , and that technique shows you where the tubers are. Your soil isn't loamy and that isn't good for planting... If you really want to do this backyard garden, then you will need to buy black soil and mix it with it
