  • These are some videos I shot on July 3rd, 2004 of the Canadian Pacific Engine No. 2816 and the Milwaukee Road Engine 261. They pulled an excursion train from Saint Paul, Minnesota to Winona, Minnesota and back again on that very rainy day.

    Magnificent footage of these two beautiful steam locomotives double heading. I hope that 2816 will be running again soon to double head with 261. I have an HO scale Broadway Limited model of the 261 which I enjoy running on my layout. Thank you for posting.

    A belated thank you for posting this interesting video of 2816. I see this video was posted approximately 5 years ago, but I am seeing just now. I LOVE the closeup views of the "Empress" know as 2816. She's GORGEOUS!!! These closeup shots shows just how splendid looking she is. And, these same shots makes me so darn proud that I own an HO brass model of 2816 imported by Van Hobbies. The real version looks spectacular, even on a dreary day. Thank you, once again, for posting this interesting video. 👍 🚂

    I read somewhere in a train magazine that a steam engine like that ,for the C>P> headed the fastest time for a passenger traine on the northamerican continent.up in Canada. inthe 1940s. Just one engine! over 100 mph.

    I chased this trip too that day! It was a difficult chase but still a great day of mainline steam action!

    Very nice footage. The only thing that « spoiled ´ it, for me, a railman for 65 years, is those 2 Amtrak locos, but let’s guess that they were needed. The video is best when the locos are going through a turnout, somewhere around 15:00, while on the way back. Great job. We have to factor here, that 2816 belongs to a Class 1 railroad (CPR) and not to some tourist rail outfit, so she gets first class attention, even if stored.

    Can someone explain why CP 2816 seems to always have white smoke or steam coming out of the somkestack while MR 261 always has black smoke coming out? Also why does MR 261 produce so much more smoke / steam than CP 2186?

    • @railfanjordan8141
      @railfanjordan8141 Před rokem

      2816 was converted from a coal burner to an oil burner, so it tends to burn fuel more cleaner than 261 which burns coal. As for the steam part, it all depends on how the crew is managing the water and fire. 261's crew puts on a "smoke show" towards the end when they're leaving so the fireman is probably shoveling more coal into the firebox and the engineer has the throttle open to where the engine is producing enough smoke and is also working hard with the train. 2816 meanwhile, is not in a working hard state, so all you see is clean white steam coming from the stack meaning the engineer has the throttle closed or the engine is probably in a drifting state while 261 does the work.

    We should notice something here. Out of courtesy for rail fan photographers, 2816 leaves her ditch lights off.
    One time out of Calgary by myself along a stretch of track, on the mainline (Lagan Sub) she approached with the ditch lites on and, when I was spotted trackside with a camera, the engineer (or fireman) switched the ditch lights off, to give me a more « authentic » and « period » picture of her.

    Even 261 more bigger than 2816 but 2816 has more horsepower than 261.But man get rid of those crappy diesel locomotive and let 2816 and 261 do all the pulling.
