Teaching is too stressful. I was a teacher for fourteen years. I'm glad that I'm no longer in it. My mental and emotional health has improved immensely, and I don't feel stressed like I did teaching. Granted I'm not making the same amount of money, but I'm still able to pay the bills, so the tradeoff is worth it.

cdzlink - I just quit teaching. After ten years. I don't think most people can get what teaching today is like. The expectations for student learning continues to become more rigorous and complex, while the interest and behavior of the students continues to deteriorate. It's a recipe for absolute insanity. I just started my credential program this year. I have no debt, and I have a family who supports my decisions. This whole process of becoming a fully certified teacher is a nightmare. Imagine becoming a circus lion, jumping through all of the hoops, and then the ringmaster adds fire around the hoops, and then adds more rings, and then adds a time limit for completion of the jumps, and so on. After realizing how difficult this career is, and how exhausting the program is, I have a new respect for all new teachers coming in (keep in mind it wasn't always this difficult to become a teacher). For me, it is too much. I'm dropping out in a few weeks, and never looking back.

I wouldn’t teach for even 5 years with the intent of doing something else later on. There are no new teachers coming out of college. People are not entering the profession. I strongly recommend people not enter the profession even if it is their passion. It is too self sacrificing. I would use my youth to study or do something else worthwhile. Part of the problem is people who have never been educators are deciding our curriculum and or laws that affect us in the classroom.

@@norseczar27 I agree that they need both! However, in spite of what a child experiences at home, such as neglect or abuse, that does not change the fact that the adult (s) that child longs for, look to, and need attention and love from is the PARENT(s). As a teacher, I see how the responsibility is placed on the teacher to provide the love and support students should have as if parents do not need to be accountable. Having teachers is not a reason or excuse for parents to be neglectful and not aspire to be better. Some parents are trying but not all, which hurts kids the most. Regardless of how hard the teacher tries and support them, which we do and enjoy doing it, they'll always wonder why their PARENTS couldn't or wouldn't do the same.

I really love this message. This hit early on for me, honestly before I even finished college. My later clinicals were very hard on me, emotionally and physically. My supervisors and I could both tell that I didn't really want to be there and even though I was trying my hardest, it was still pretty obvious that I didn't want to be there anymore. I finally had to sit down with one of my college's upper administrators and ask for help. We basically compromised on some of my classes and I graduated with a very similar degree that still gave me credit for my hard work instead of just starting over. I love working with kids, but there are so many other options that aren't in a classroom.

In my first and only year of teaching, someone attempted to bribe me, I was intimidated by administration, groped by a drunk mom, harassed over the phone and email, falsely accused of sexual harassment, and students and even other teachers spread rumors defaming my character. This was only in a span of 9 months because school was shut down in March. I came in to work every day scared of what would happen next. It started affecting my physical and mental health. I had back pain and was falling asleep while at my desk. I came to work angry and left angrier. I have experience substitute teaching in impoverished inner city schools, and the academic and behavioral problems I witnessed simply made sense. Of course they were scared, frustrated, and hopeless -- their lives were spiritually and materially empty because of poverty, abuse, neglect, etc. But this full-time position was in a wealthy community with a reputation and pride in their schools. These were people that had everything laid out for a privileged, fulfilling life, yet they acted nastier than those with real problems. It took a long time to sort out how I could love and trust people again after knowing what people are capable of. I resigned, moved, and started my own business. I am much happier now and my health has improved.

Brooke: I have no doubt that there are still schools out there where students want to learn, making teaching a pleasure for those educators who are passionate to share their knowledge. - However, I know a great many teachers (and former teachers), and the over-whelming majority lost their passion (and illusions) along the way. It is difficult to maintain passion in the face of unrealistic district policies and directives. It is difficult to maintain passion in the face of administrators becoming tyrants as the shit from above forces them to pass their own stress down to their teaching staff. It is difficult to maintain passion when teachers are being whipped like mules to get good test scores - and this from students who would rather be anywhere but school, doing anything other than learning to better read, write, and calculate. It is difficult to maintain passion in the face of a workload that would kill a horse. It is a job not fit for a dog. That is a reality for far too many teachers. And yes, I got out.

Please, dont teach in UK or come to teach in UK either ! Your life will be destroyed if you come! You will work 70-80 hours a week, no time to even take care of your basic needs. You will be marking books during the weekends and holidays. The money is so bad that you will struggle to pay your own rent and even basics like food, and possibly you will be living in a small seedy room...Also,an increasing number of British teenage students are extremely disengaged, nasty, violent...from spitting at you, throwing cans and all sort of objects, including chairs, to pushing you, including constant shouting and swearing...you will be treated like rubbish and be blamed for it. And no one does anything, they hide it under the carpet or use you as an scape goat. Teaching in UK is glorified babysitting where the kids basically rule like tyrant dictators...Please, stay away! They are just calling you cause no one wants to teach in UK anymore! Its modern slavery! And we urgently need an Education reform!

It could be an extension of your mission/ministry in the classroom. All learning doesn't have to happen within the four walls of a classroom. Keep doing what you are doing.

Nice that you love teaching kids. A lot of kids make the job terrible, mostly because their parents are not parenting. The stress and responsibilities are way more than most people can do without suffering. The disrespect from just a few kids in your classroom can wear you down, day in and day out.

Hi! I’m in my first year of teaching and I’ve always loved kids and working with them. Based on this experience it has made me question everything. But one thing I do know is I enjoyed working with kids way more in previous positions than in teaching. There just isn’t the time to really enjoy the time spent with them because you’re constantly trying to get things done, trying to refocus them and ultimately trying to get the students to do work that they simply don’t want to do. There are fun moments and learning can be made fun as well. But it’s not the main thing. You may try it and it may work for you. But there is more fun to be had with children in other capacities than being a classroom teacher in my opinion. Hope you find what you’re looking for and everything works out for you! God bless 😊

It's at a place where teachers are not even allow to force a behavior children to follow the directions and you're not allow to call for assistance from a assistant principal. This is really the nightmare most American teachers go through and to make matters worst, these administrators give these kids the green light to lie and seek REVENGE on teachers who choose to follow protocol and their parents just side with them. I use to be liberal when I was younger when it comes to the issues of respecting authority, but now that I'm older and in the school districts now, all I can say is if these kids don't learn soon on who and when to respect authority, don't be to surprise by how they're treated if they ever get surrounded by law enforcement, because their job is just as stressful and terrifying.

Teachers should not feel like they love their job everyday. If you are a teacher you are a professional, not a superhuman. You don't have to love your kids. You respect them and help them because you care and because that is your job. Period. Let's not make it more than it is. Teaching is super stressful and difficult, but so are many, many jobs. And you should stay in it if, you can keep your sanity and it is your life means. And just like any job, if you stay in it you should act like a professional. Please stop saying that teachers need to be superhuman caring hearts who love their jobs all of the time. That's just BS.

I had road blocks in my way and knew God was telling me something. I was a church youth director instead and I also taught a class on world religion for a while, now I homeschool and hobby farm. They tried to make teaching into a science with tests and grades. Teaching is more of an art. The way the while things are set up in public school students don't really have time to learn anything. I told and old veteran teacher once "thank you for your sacrifice.". It was a verbal slip, she just looked at me strangely. She was not a soldier....right? I think you might appreciate it when I say...thank you for your sacrifice.

Run people, get out of NC. You stay, your kids will be dumb. The kids that grow up in PA and go to college in PA will be YOUR grown kids Boss. If you are a teacher, go to Seattle WA where they pay for your CEU credits. I am making a measly 52,000 a year AFTER I worked for TWENTY YEARS in NC. Seattle pays $79,000 for the my CEU credits for those many years. NC took away Masters pay, EOG pay, Longevity pay, step pay. You do not get that 2 1/2% pay raise every year NC used to give. Starting in 2014, they stopped that. Every FIVE years you work, then you get that two and a half percent pay raise. And there is no teacher union like in PA. Get out NOW. Get away from NC, for YOUR sake, for your CHILDREN'S sake.

All of the dull adults you know started out as dull kids so there is really nothing special about kids. So plainly kids do not have unlimited potential. And more to the point, kids who dislike academics should be diverted into trades training to improve their chances of earning a decent living. Flunking out of college does no one any good. Becoming a master plumber just might make you at least half way rich some day. That’s certainly better than flunking out of the local open admissions commuter state university for all the kids living in their parents’ basements. So do you want to be the guy to teach all of the dullards who are not benefiting from school? Of course not. And I just described two-thirds of the kids you’ll see in your classroom if you screw up and decide to waste several years teaching school.
