I’ve been watching “Why I Quit Teaching” videos for the last hour or two as I struggle with my own decisions about my teaching career. I’ve been having the worst few months of my life in my first year teaching and my mental health has declined so severely that my friends and family are worried about me. I’m at a loss for what to do and have been wondering if I should quit mid-year. Your video gave me some useful insight that I hadn’t heard yet, so I appreciate you for having posted this.

This is a thankless profession! I regret the day I filled in those training application forms. My life is so negatively impacted in too many ways, I am totally burnt out and realise I will eventually need to make a decision for my sanity and future. Money isn't everything so whatever I do should be enough to put food on the table etc. I feel like a failure after 30 years of giving up my soul and neglecting my own kids in favour of the evil demands of this job. I love the kids (they adore me and think I'm THE BEST teacher) but the rubbish bureaucracy and toxic environment of school life where so called friends turn on you and women are as vicious as ever - NO THANKS! Welcome to the world of teaching in the United states! First off, first year teachers go through a process similar to hazing. They pack your class with the behavior kids. It's a bad cycle. Second, the admin. Cant put in evaluations saying everyone is great or mediocre. They have to have a few bad ones to put on probation and say they are fixing them. They have extra lesson plans, 2 or 3 times the amount of observations, etc. There is no backing for those who try to get their behavior kids under control. In fact they get blamed! Most teachers who make it through this process have figured out a way to curb the behavior (which would get them in trouble if it came to light) or just deal and push through. Eventually, getting a little bit better class as the newer teachers come in and get their class packed with all the behavior problems. You wonder why so many districts are having to higher 400 plus new teachers every year and also try to pull in foreign teachers. It's a mess. Nobody wants to hold the parents and kids accountable anymore. Teachers have no power. My many years of experience!

This job will break you, you have to be tough. My kids think I am nuts, but I have a thousand tricks up my sleeves to get them to behave. I have been beaten, defeated, elated, exalted, and everything in between. The kids don't care, you make them care by attitude, being funny, by love, by being an ass. I gave them a book assignment (Which I hate and never do) told them if they talked we would do the same thing again tomorrow. Then I pulled out cookies, sat in the front of my room, eating cookies with a big smart ass grin, They have never gave me a seconds problem. When they get loud I just walk to my desk and get cookies and they get quiet and let me teach, because I am more fun than book work. I taught a self contained Catholic parochial 7th grade class right after getting out of the navy where I was a Quartermaster 2nd class/submarines or a navigational watch stander at the chart table in the control room on two different boats. The first thing I noticed about the kids was that the bottom third in both grades I taught math to simply couldn’t do arithmetic beyond perhaps a third grade level which to me was so contemptible considering my background that I lost faith in the entire educational system immediately. But the merchant marine wasn’t hiring yet in the early 1980s so I ended up wasting 7 years on that crap before finally getting into the Seafarer’s Union around 1988. The villain of this piece is social promotion, or the practice of killing these kids with kindness. These same kids were also incapable of passing the entrance exams to any of the local Catholic high schools so it was off to the public school for them for high school. When I was in high school at a public school myself such types were shunted off into industrial arts and took “shop math” instead of geometry and algebra.

Just realize that all your coursework you did, writing perfect lesson plans, you will use probably 5%. If you have a good administration, count your blessings.

What are you issues with the admins? I've been teaching of 6 years and honestly the first few just suck in general. My first year was terrible because my lessons and management was bad. I made the decision to focus on management that year and got pretty good at it. My second year, my management was above average so I focused on teaching my content (science). That is something that I'm still changing little by little each year. You get to the point where you don't need much support from administration. I only need them when handling certain parents.

In my first and only year of teaching, someone attempted to bribe me, I was intimidated by administration, groped by a drunk mom, harassed over the phone and email, falsely accused of sexual harassment, and students and even other teachers spread rumors defaming my character. This was only in a span of 9 months because school was shut down in March. I came in to work every day scared of what would happen next. It started affecting my physical and mental health. I had back pain and was falling asleep while at my desk. I came to work angry and left angrier. I have experience substitute teaching in impoverished inner city schools, and the academic and behavioral problems I witnessed simply made sense. Of course they were scared, frustrated, and hopeless -- their lives were spiritually and materially empty because of poverty, abuse, neglect, etc. But this full-time position was in a wealthy community with a reputation and pride in their schools. These were people that had everything laid out for a privileged, fulfilling life, yet they acted nastier than those with real problems. It took a long time to sort out how I could love and trust people again after knowing what people are capable of. I resigned, moved, and started my own business. I am much happier now and my health has improved.

I got hired at a Catholic school last summer two weeks before school, middle school lit/ELA. Worked my ass off for minimum wage. So…
My first year; COVID, first year principal; virtual and in person; difficult class! What could go wrong? 6 weeks in: parent shows up at school complaining student’s grades not yet posted; principal comes running into my room and takes me to task in front of class and then proceeds to have another teacher cover my class while she berated me and threatened to put a note in my file. That was my last day.

I look at this generation of school kids, and estimate will it get better or worse in five or ten years time, once teaching was a life times work, not any more, generations of changes in behaviour is more violent in our kids, self safety must be used to stay or try and carry on, I'm not educated in any way but can read the score which way its going, local they built this 50 million school and it's practically run by viral girl, boy, that puts pressure on decent wanting to learn pupils, it would have been better to have had one for penal kids and the other half decent kids.

Hello! I resigned a full time job a month a go due to a health problem. But I'm worried that I won't get hired anywhere to sub. Did your former admin tell you they would give you a good reference when you left? I didn't ask mine when I left. But I'm hoping they will. Any advice for me? I want to sub and I'm scared of the mid year resignation stigma.

This 'teaching abroad where the money is' is a fascinating issue. It highlights difficult matters of morality i.e. earning a very good living in countries (china and saudi arabia have both been mentioned in the comments) with questionable universal social freedoms whilst leaving behind the failing schools back in one's home country, the country one would imagine, to which one would like to return at some point and which is populated by the soon-to-be adults who the failing schools have err... failed.
