  • My restoration of a beautiful and rare gas lighter. The lighter is very ancient, probably from the period of World War I. The lighter was in very poor condition, the whole surface was rusty and dirty. Under the rust there was a beautiful carving on a metal surface. After restoring this lighter, you will be amazed by its beauty.
If you have information about this lighter, from which year or period it is, write in the comments. Thank you.

The flint goes in from the bottom and is held against the spark wheel by the spring, then the spring is held in by the screw, shouldn't have to remove the spark wheel to change flints.

I use scrap leather for holding small parts in a vise. It's very controllable and won't damage delicate surfaces, whereas paper towels, once wet can lose its grip on the project piece, i.e., once wet, it can shift, exposing the metal to accidental damage.

Suggestion: Nevr-Dull cotton wadding not only makes brass and other metals shine like new but also puts an invisible protective coating on the projects metal surface. And there are lots of ways to apply it, including elbow grease. The stuff is awesome and a little bit goes a long way. I've been using it for over 60 years.

I believe may be made by Nevr-Dull. I think there was some kind of a law suite in California - actually, there was, I just haven't read the details, something about the strict California laws on chemicals (that are much stricter than the Feds).

I think that, indeed, the polishing elements here were too aggressive. Perhaps a review of a couple of watchmakers’ channels would help? I can recommend The Nekkid Watchmaker, whose approach is like your own, and Vintage Watchmaking Services, or RichardPettit, both of whom have a more conservative approach. While the result here is no doubt beautiful, before a rare piece is made to look new an expert evaluation of its value is really needed. If it’s low value, then go to town. If high value, be more conservative. This is not just a matter of taste.

Interesting looking old lighter. I have a few old ones from the 40's and 50's. Looks like it's copper. Nexti time you want to clean copper, sprinkle it with a liberal amount of salt and then add vinegar to the salt and rub with a sponge. Cleans copper up like new with very little effort and it doesn't leave any scratches or swirl marks behind.

Your work ways amazes me and I wish you did talking videos too for people interested in getting started and to learn about your background and how you got started and a video on tools and hot to videos to show while tools work best when and the order or restoration and l of that! Or make a second channel dedicated to all of that! That would be a GREAT idea for starting your second channel!

Have you ever thought about using Tarnex or Brasso for removing tarnish? It works well and doesn't scratch like sanding papers or drill can. Just a thought.

I think that, in those days, things were not considered as being 'throwaway'. People took care of their possessions. The original owner would be most happy to be viewing this restoration now, were there a heaven to view it from.

I totally agree! I'm AH-MAZED that the cap that covers the wick was still with the lighter. I'm such a butter fingers, even if I tried my absolute best not to drop that cap, I eventually WOULD! And with my luck it would roll into a storm drain or into a manhole. I think I'd have a jeweler solder one end of a tiny chain to the body of the lighter and the other to the cap, just in case!

A wonderful restoration. Perhaps it was a treasured possession of a young soldier fighting in the carnage that was WWI? A gift possibly from his sweetheart or mother and father? Who knows? Every such object has a human story behind it and it's good to know that people, like our restorer friend here, treat these objects with such respect.
