    I have the Kef LSX , great speaker but I would be happy with speaker B as well.
    My speaker is connected via Optical Cable to my PC.
    When the speakers are connected via optical the sound gets a bit better than when in Bluetooth.
    Thumbs up to you and your speakers.
    For 1200 Euro I don't know what speakers would deliver the quality and features of the Kef LSX.

    Ignore the people disliking man, just focus on making good content.
    Few things I noticed while watching. You talk about the treble dips, one of them is a BBC dip. And don't forget that audiophile or good sound does not mean a flat response curve, or just flat at the treble and midrange. Also the treble rolling of has nothing to do with how refinded something is. Frequency response graphs do not tell a lot about speakers. It's just like speaker wattage. It is only usefull for some aspacts. A graph cannot show how dynamic a speakers is, how the timing is etc.
    Also these apeakers need some break-in. These software issues can be caused ny not having the latest firmware on the speakers itself. Make sure that you use latest app and firmware, in my experience the android app is a bit better. Having a high performance router helps to. Otherwise you might have a faulty unit or something similair. Give them a few tweaks. The demo for this, did you record this on an iPhone? That upperbass is really off compared to how I experienced them. I am writing this as I am watching and you again said: 'People say that the treble is more refined although the measurements clearly say' once again don't state thing like this based on a graph. That is like saying this speakers goed louder because it has more watts. There are many more factors
    .
    What was the main way you connected to the speakers? I personally use optical from my MacBook Pro or iMac and the KEF stream app. It makes a hige difference over bluetooth or aux. I do have one suggestion for the videos, the voice over is a bit annoying because (i presume) the use of binaurel microphones, there are some sharp s's and f's in the right channel.
    But that is just some feedback from a fan, don't take this nagtively in any way. I like the contect and I hope to see a lot more of it in 2019!

      @Beos_Valrah Před 4 lety +1

      I agree with what you said. And one thing I also noticed in the graph, is how the uploader didn't show any numbers in dB on _how big_ the dips and humps of the frequency response really are.
      If you're going to show measurements, *please* do it properly.

    Bluetooth is quite a poor connection on Kef speakers. No mather if it is the LSX, EGG or LS50Wireless.
    I would love to hear your opinion on the Kef LS50Wireless via every connection BUT bluetooth.

  • @bradleychapman9115
    @bradleychapman9115 Před 5 lety +2

    Great follow up video. Just a comment: great speakers are tuned for the human hearing response curve, which is not flat at all. You would expect to see boosts and cuts in strategic places. A person listening to a sine sweep should not be able to tell if one frequency is louder than another, even if it looks odd on the spectrogram.

    How does the KEF LSX compare to the Naim Muso and Devialet Phantom Reactor 600? Also, please if you could so kindly recommend any speaker(s) in the £500-1000 range that you believe is great for the money, I would appreciate. Many thanks for your time!

    Did you compare the 2 speakers using the LSX via WiFi or Bluetooth ?
    I too preferred speaker B and am not surprised with the results .
    It had a more balanced sound , IMO . However I’m curious if you tried tweaking the DSP on the LSX . I own Ls 50 wireless and enjoy them .
    Keep up the good work , Tony !

    • @speakertoni2680
      @speakertoni2680  Před 5 lety

      Sabu Kumar thank you
      I used it via Bluetooth to make the comparison fair
      I did spend some time setting up the DSP when I got them but this is the best I could do
      Maybe I’ll try out the desk mode on my stands again as it reduces a bit of the upper bass
      We’ll see

    • @sabukumar3069
      @sabukumar3069 Před 5 lety

      In my experience with the ls50 wireless , it sounds better via “WiFi “ input , streaming tidal/ Spotify , over Bluetooth .
      Also , I set a few custom DSP settings on the speakers which really help fine tune the sound . Rolled off highs , less bass etc can be addressed here . Please do have a go if you can and share your findings .
      Appreciate all your awesome content and have learnt a lot from your videos .

    • @speakertoni2680
      @speakertoni2680  Před 5 lety

      Sabu Kumar the Lsx doesn’t have the same options as the Ls50w I think
      The only thing you can do is set it to different modes and boost or reduce treble
      There’s no full EQ in that app
      In all videos treble was at max (+2db)

  • @linkeddevices
    @linkeddevices Před 4 lety

    the KEF 3001SEs EGGs are the passive version of these speakers. no kidding. listen to them yourself back to back with a good Amp. it's why there was no predecessor to the 3001/SEs and the successor EGGs were all based on the 2001.3 instead which was itself based on the celestion AVP.
    the 3001SEs were KEFs chance to do their own reboot of a small hi fi speaker from scratch which allowed them to pack several generations worth of upgrades and innovations which would later on trickle up to the blade then down to define the way kef does everything.

    I was shocked at how bad I thought 'A' was, and now finding out they were the KEFs...that's affected my buying decision. How accurate was your recording to their real life performance? On some tracks of the blind test (first two) they sounded muffled. Will have to hear them in person once the lockdown is over.

  • @chrisdado
    @chrisdado Před 5 lety

    To my ear the KEF speakers have noticeable sibilance at higher energy treble peaks, and a confused mid bass response. In fairness, your self-made speakers (while admirable), have a somewhat strident mid range IMO.

    • @speakertoni2680
      @speakertoni2680  Před 5 lety

      Could be because the KEF sounds so dull in the midrange compared to it
      Or it’s due to the treble peak in the DIY speaker
      The midbass unit is a pretty great one here, so it should be the tunings fault

    • @chrisdado
      @chrisdado Před 5 lety

      @@speakertoni2680 I don't think its a treble peak. I don't want to appear overly critical, this current design is way ahead of the early Apollon. Maybe the comparison with the KEF units does over emphasise it, but I also think it may be an inherent quirk of very small conical drivers used as mid-bass

    • @speakertoni2680
      @speakertoni2680  Před 5 lety

      Chris Dad the treble peak can certainly make everthing sound more screaming than it should
      Anyways
      This design is around 2 years older than the Apollon hehe
      But it’s not in the same class so I can’t really compare them
      Sure, small drivers being pushed in the bass always sounds a bit forced
      But as a mid range driver this thing is nearly unbeatable
      Thanks to it’s small size it can have a light yet very stable cone which allows for excellent midrange if you use it over 400hz
      But in this design where it’s used as a midbass it might be a bit stressed at some points

    i hate so much people that judge speakers only on the trade, the looks and those who likes boosted sound with bass that swallows vocals like on the terrible jbl boombox. I am 100% sure that if ones they ear a completely flat bass response from at least 40 to 1000hz (yes there is bass notes till 1000hz) they will be completely blown away, asking themselves "why did i liked the sound of the boombox tho ?"

    Great Test BTW!!
    Kef's - Sounded slightly hollow which bordered on sounding clinical/sharp. They were very hard to listen to. The sound stage was spacial and not directional/natural. I have to say I've found this with the Kef products I've tried, they just don't do sound staging well. Your speakers are just overall warmer and fuller, with more natural presentation. I'm sorry, but the Kef's sounded like the poor commercial speaker that it is!
    What did surprise me (although it shouldn't) was the bass from your speakers. With the smaller mibbass driver I thought it would struggle. What I forget is that the Kef (and other brands) are stuffed to the brim with tech and sound damping material, which may offer some benefits, however IMO if unchecked, it literally kills a drivers potential stone dead.
    Well done mate!

      @speakertoni2680  Před 5 lety

      TransmissionLineDesigns thanks, I appreciate hearing that!
      Yea, the KEF seems to miss some sparkle and just energy.
      The self made speaker does have more and IMO better bass but it also comes at a cost.
      It can’t play as loud as the KEF and also doesn’t feature a limiter since it’s a passive speaker.
      We used dampening as well but you have to use the right amount especially when it comes ported speakers.
