(HD 720p) The isle of Innisfree, Theme From "The Quiet Man"

  • Farrelly's "Isle of Innisfree" is a beautiful haunting melody by Irish Composer and Songwriter Dick Farrelly (1916 - 1990). The melody and lyrics express the longing of an Irish emigrant for his native land. It was the main theme of the film "The Quiet Man". It became a worldwide hit for Bing Crosby in 1952 and continues to enrich the repertoires of many artists; it endures in the hearts of many as one of the great songs of Ireland.
The 1952 movie "The Quiet Man" was set in 1920s Ireland. Sean Thornton (John Wayne), an Irish-born American from Pittsburgh, returns to Ireland to reclaim his family's farm in Innisfree. He meets and falls in love with the fiery spinster Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara).
    Isle Of Inisfree
    I've met some folks
Who say that I'm a dreamer
    And I've no doubt
There's truth in what they say
But sure a body's bound to be a dreamer
When all the things he loves are far away
    And precious things
    Are dreams unto an exile
    They take him o'er
    The land across the sea
Especially when it happens he's an exile
From that dear lovely Isle of Inisfree
    And when the moonlight
    Peeps across the rooftops
    Of this great city

This movie and "It's a Wonderful Life" are my favorite movies, and I'm only 17 years old. They need to make movies like that. Not garbage, moral-less movies like they do now.

RIP to the legend that is Maureen O'Hara who passed away today at the age of 95. She was the last living actress from the "Golden age of Hollywood" and as of this day there is no longer any living cast members from 'The Quiet Man'. May she be just as feisty and amazing in the afterlife as she was to all of us

This is my all-time favourite film. Ever.
Since I first saw it as a small boy, maybe 60 years ago.
I am a huge John Wayne fan and a western/cowboy fan generally..
Just love the movies.. and this one particularly, tho' it struggles sometimes with Casablanca.. and Out of Africa.
But what always swings it, is the gorgeous redhead who shines thro' it and who I have loved all these years.
The casting for this movie was exemplary.. really, it is a question of who steals it.? There are some wonderful parts for the regular repertory company here. But Barry FitzGerald.. heroic, homeric. Superb
And please don't tell Miss O'hara.. I would be sooo embarrassed. Best just to say nothing and love from a distance.
I wish I'd met someone like her fabulous characters.
    But Shhhhhhhhhhhh.!

A few years ago I drove a college baseball team to a tournament for the tour company I worked for. A player asked the coach if he could play a movie on the video system on the bus. Coach said sure, you know the rules. The movie was Boondocks Saints, coach told me to stop and open the door, he removed the disc and flew it out the door like a frisbee, when the player started complaining the coach yelled back that his IQ had dropped 20 points in the few minutes the movie was playing. The coach asked me if I had brought any movies and I handed him The Quiet Man and Red River. The players complained for a few minutes and then were quiet. By the time we were at our destination they had watched Red River once and The Quiet Man twice and after the 3 day tournament they asked me if they could watch my movies on the way home.

    The Isle of Innisfree…
I've met some folk who say that I'm a dreamer
And I've no doubt there's truth in what they say
But sure a body's bound to be a dreamer
When all the things he loves are far away
And precious things are dreams unto an exile
They take him o’er the land across sea
Especially when it happens he's in exile
From that dear lovely Isle of Innisfree
And when the moonlight peeps across the rooftops
Of this great city, wondrous though it be
I scarcely feel its wonder or its laughter
I'm once again back home in Innisfree
    --- Instrumental ---
I wander o'er green hills and dreamy valleys
And find the peace no other land could know
I hear the birds make music fit for angels
And watch the rivers laughing as they flow
And then into a humble shack I wander
My dear own home and tenderly behold
The folks I love around the turf fire are gathered
On bended knees, their rosary is told
But dreams don't last though dreams are not forgotten
And soon I’m back to stern reality
But though they pave the footways here with gold dust
I would still choose my Isle of Innisfree
But though they pave the footways here with gold dust...
    I would still choose my… Isle… of… Innisfree...

Sorry you couldn't have met my grandmother. When she was very young, she looked like Katharine Hepburn, but, as she matured, she looked a lot more like Maureen O'Hara.

Beautiful haunting music, however, I believe that John Heuston didn't mention the composer Dick Farrelly in the credits of the film.

I just got two things to say, first i'm proud to be Irish, second, does anyone know what Maureen o'Hara whispers to John Wayne at the end of the film? Its so annoying that because of a promise she made with John, she won't tell.

All of the conflicts addressed in the picture are resolved when the picture concludes except one. Remember when the two of them are discussing flowers and potatoes in the garden and John says to her “and no children “. That question is answered when Maureen whispers into John’s ear that she is going to have a baby. Now all the conflicts and questions are answered. One of the finest films of all time. Always my favorite.

Would he film be so rememberable without the theme music, written by Dick Farrelly who strangely enough got no mention in the credits. The scenery is beautiful but stage Irish in some ways. The brawls, Wayne's apparently dragging Kate by the hairs. Maureen O Hara undoubtedly a beautiful woman having to act as a skittery semi wild part, peeping around gateways. Anyway.... It was of its time. Still love it
