  • On today's episode of Java Royale, we're pitting the super-easy, beginner level Clever Dripper against the V60.
    Which is better in a blind taste test?
    These are the recipes we used:

      Yep, different brewing method needs fine tuning of grind size.. But I grind a little coarser with the Clever than V60, I find it brings out more sour/bitter when I grind finer with Clever. The V60 is smoother tasting but requires more attention when brewing. I actually just use the Clever because of it's set and forget type of brew, it's like a refined French Press.

    • @Ambrovious
      @Ambrovious Před 2 lety

      @@VanSanProductions I understand your reasoning. I guess it comes down to the type of roast your beans have. I actually enjoy a bit more brightness and the slight sour is a plus for me. I agree, I was a french press guy for a long time and then I found the Clever. I guess we are all striving to find what best suits us individually...so keep doing you!

    I have V60, Kalita, Clever Dripper, Chemex, Aeropress and French Press at home. If you ask me what’s my favorite I‘d probably say the Kalita. In the end however it highly depends on the beans. When I get a new package, I try every method and see which one suits the beans the best.

    Aside from what everybody else has already mentioned (bad experiment, didn't divulge any of the variables to us, extremely high chance they messed up the CD brewing process, etc.) - this video was a hilarious, almost textbook example of confirmation bias.
    "We prefer the V60, but let's put it up against the Clever Dripper and see what happens!"

  • @financeashish
    @financeashish Před 4 lety +14

    I do not feel part of this comparative analysis without knowing how much water and coffee were used, and the brew time and how coarse the grind was for each. You would naturally expect Clever to give you a stronger yet clean cup - thats what it is being touted for - but the colour of the brew there looked weak (or was it the lighting effect?). I mostly only do a Frenchpress and do not like what the remnant grit does to the coffee while it is cooling down. I was hoping Clever could eliminate that issue for me. I am thinking whether the versatile Aeropress might be a better buy though and whether this is required if one has an Aeropress and wants to make single serves. Whats do you reckon?

      @arianewell6252 Před 3 lety +1

    Own both of these P.O. brewers along with many more and can state that it takes a while to fully optimize taste regardless of brewer. Grind, time, dose, agitation and water temp all play a factor here and both make a great cup of coffee. Did find that the C.C. brewer does add more body to the cup while the V60 made for a cleaner cup but not to the level of a Chemex.

Next will be switching coffee from medium-dark to medium for my Clever. Medium roasts have been sour for me in my pour over so I plan to let them brew a little longer in my Clever. Really want a new grinder. Considering the new Fellow Ode Gen2. Just having too much fun with all this. Makes me really look forward to mornings as well as afternoon cups. Funny video review. Cheers all..!! PS - How do you like the carafe used in the video? I just got a Fellow Mighty Small. I like it except it seems to always have a drip hanging outside of its pour spout. • @benjohnmiller
    @benjohnmiller Před 4 lety +29

    Pourover coffee, when made correctly, is always nicer than immersion coffee. Why? With pourover, hot water at the correct temperature does a quick tango with the ground coffee, steals its heart and then moves on. In doing so, it takes all the flavour and coffee goodness quickly, but doesn't hang around long enough for the rot to set in. By rot, I mean over-extraction. However, to get a terrific cup of pourover, you really need to be on the ball during the entire process. Grind consistency has to be bang-on. Get this wrong and you'll either have a cup that zips through and tastes insipid and under-extracted, or hangs around too long and tastes over-extracted. Get the water temp wrong and that will also affect the flavour.
    My advice in the Pourover v Clever debate would be this:
    (Baseline: rinsed paper filters, pre-warmed vessel and mug, decent burr grinder, but most importantly, speciality coffee you love)
    - If you like every coffee you make to be a science experiment made in a quest to make the nicest cup of coffee you can - but more importantly, you have the time to do it - definitely invest decent money in pourover coffee.
    - If for whatever reason (laziness, time constraints, law of diminishing returns) you just want a great cup of coffee with the minimum of effort, definitely use a Clever Dripper.
    Of the latter, I think the Clever Dripper is ideal for brewing coffee with the minimum of fuss. Accepting a Clever brew cannot hit the heights of pourover, you're now free to make a cup of coffee that best suits you: French press coarse grind and a 3-4 minute steep? Filter coarse and a minute or two's steep? Try it and see which works best for you. And don't forget, you can make standard pourover coffee in a Clever! Just plonk the Clever on a mug and proceed using the pourover method: with the valve now open, it'll work exactly the same as a pourover.
    Having been through coffee geekdom myself, I eventually discovered that all I really wanted was a great cup of coffee with the minimum amount of effort. In this respect, the Clever is the winner every time and my daily go-to.

    • @vecernicek2
      @vecernicek2 Před 4 lety +4

      I guess you can use the Clever to make a pour-over as well, if you just place it on the mug right away? With the Clever, you get the functionality of both, so it's a no-brainer as to what to buy. Or am I missing something?

    • @benjohnmiller
      @benjohnmiller Před 4 lety +4

      @@vecernicek2 Exactly. The Clever gives you both a pourover (valve open on a cup) and an immersion brewer (valve closed on a flat surface). Based on pure logic alone, why would you buy anything else?

      @glennluteraan4434 Před 3 lety +2

      I had wondered the same thing and I believe it was James Hoffman that had answered this question. His answer was the plastic one and it was directly related to reasons of maintaining water temperature. The plastic gets to temp much quicker and maintains the temp. The ceramic robs a lot of heat initially and causes a rapid cool down, yes, you can preheat it, but that is extra time/effort being spent that is avoidable with the plastic one. The issues with the glass and metal is that, while they get to temp quickly, they release heat very quickly. The added bonus is also that the plastic one is the cheapest. All will make good coffee, but the plastic was his go-to.

      If you already own a V60, as I do, then there'd be no need to keep it if you got a Clever.
      If you already have a V60, there's no need to buy a Clever if you're happy steeping in another vessel and filtering through the V60 - it's just convenience.
