In 1986, I was stationed at Camp Lejeune. My best friend was another WM. She was an outstanding Marine, excellent at EVERYTHING. She decided to go out for WSSI School, Water Safety Survival Instructor. If I recall, she was one of the first WMs to attend what was considered one of the toughest schools in the Corps (along with DI School, SERE School, and Force Recon Indocs.) WSSI was 12 hours minimum every day for 14 days. We were both single back then & lived in the barracks. I’d rush down to her room to check on her ASAP when she got back. When I opened her door that first night, she was curled into a fetal position on her rack. She was definitely asleep . . . but crying, too. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since. And that’s how it was every night. I was really worried about her well-being. But she wouldn’t quit (a big no-no for us Marines, of course.😐) Well, she not only finished WSSI School, she was the #1 GRADUATE. First WM to ever achieve it! I was SO damned proud of her. Amazing.

I agree with you. For along time they were not even considered "brothers" by the other branches of service. So glad this has changed and shows like this show just what skills and professionalism that is involved. I wanted to be part of the USCG back when younger but at that time it was still male preferred. Glad that has changed over time as well. They are a great group of men and women. 😊

I was in the USCG and served up and down the West coast and from Boston to Canada. The Atlantic could get really bad with "Noreaster's." But the Pacific could get even worse in storms. I've been up to Sitka and those waters are way beyond either ocean where I served. Cold, icy, choppy water that comes in what they call "confused." Water is going every which way and there's a lot of tide dangers. The guys that serve there deserve all the credit they get.

Two years after the fact but I wanted to reply. Bless your heart and soul for entering into the career of EMT in the first place. You will find that your knowledge and skills will serve you and others well throughout your life, even if not in an acting role of EMT. I would not find it surprising to hear that even in the past two years you've been able to help someone even if you wouldn't deem it a 'rescue or rescuscitate' type situation.
We lost my niece due to abuse several years ago - abuse at a dayhome. I'm happy to say that the evil so-and-so is locked up for many, many more years. Abuse of anyone, especially a small child, is horrific. When a parent goes to a trusted, vetted daycare/home facility to pick up their child who has been reportedly 'fussy' all day, only to have to rush them to the hospital on the way home from said daycare and have them dead in your arms within 4 hours of that, it leaves you whirling. Thinking that this POS is sitting at home on her sofa with her kids and husband while my neice is dying was infuriating. Of course, initially we had no idea what was happening.
Again, good on you for taking that step to begin with. God bless you, Brandie!

Head injuries always bleed more than any other except arterial cuts. Which you really don't want either. I cracked my head open when I was 4 years old, I passed out from the fall. Then, when I came to as I went to get up, I had to pull my head out off what was stuck inside. I couldn't get up until I dislodged my head from the metal protruding from the ground and once I did that the blood started gushing and I was just able to get inside the front door as I fell down and passed out again. There was a lot of blood, it's amazing that my little child body could lose that much blood and still live. They stitched up inside my head before they were able to close the wound

Oh, lots of drama as can be imagined but when I think back to the time there, the sharpest, most-impressive recalls are of standing w/transfer crew as Life Flight et other helos dropped down the massive cliff of a building into a narrow corridor of KCFD-blocked road with (Brush Creek?) huge park trees lining the other side. Damn spectacle if a night transfer. Salute!

Survival suits for crew members on fishing boats! I began spending summers on a troller/seiner in Alaska in 1962, and I never even heard of survival suits and for the next seven seasons, none of the crew had anything like that. I've been in a 70 knot wind 50 miles off shore in the Gulf of Alaska, on the Fairweather Grounds west of Lituya Bay, and in a 44-foot wooden boat. I now wonder how we survived and I've been in inside waters from Pelican to Puget Sound in some scary storms. In those days there were no survival suits at all and no radar for the first 4 seasons.

People should never have to pay out of pocket for life saving services like this...few of us are rich...and insurance companies exist for profit. We've had it in Canada for ages and it works great. The quality has gone down because people are trying to push a for-profit system...we just need to fund it better.

The Coast guard helo's are also primarily a search and rescue unit and only have basic life support equipment onboard due to space and weight constraints. A doctor would not be any more useful then a well trained EMT. The focus is to stabilize and transport as quickly as possible to a location where they can receive proper medical attention.

If you watch helicopter first responders out of the UK, the man with the severe facial injuries would have been put into a coma on site and intubated. This would have relaxed his brain to prevent further injury and allow his care givers to breath for him. They also carry blood when needed. I think the american coast guards could learn a lot from the Uk.

    • @yes2day100
      @yes2day100 Před 2 lety +2

I love watching the UK ambulance services shows. I'm a devotee. However, the Coast Guard is not a voluntary-donation-funded agency with volunteer doctors to join the flights. It is a branch of the military. The Coast Guard airmen/sailors are trained to board ships which are breaking the law, search and rescue, and policing drug smugglers. They are not trained as full fledged corpsmen or paramedics. If they believe a corpsman is necessary, in a given SAR, they bring one with them, but a corpsman has limited licensing vis a vis providing medical care and administering meds. There are not dozens of volunteer doctors available to go on these flights, as this is not a volunteer organization. So, while I understand how it works in the UK, and I think it is wonderful, there is no way that a military agency can provide full medical care on a rescue helicopter. Their goal is to pull the patient out of danger, and keep them alive until they get to the ambulance. Paramedics in the ambulance will provide necessary medical care. And, by the way, the UK Coast Guard has a similar mission: "After recovering any casualty the CRTs will provide the assistance needed then will transfer them to a place of safety. The teams will also provide support to the lifeboats and SAR helicopters per tasking by the Operations Centres."

I can only imagine that he, being semiconscious, might´ve just tried to fight off hte mask because it was pushed onto his fractures in the face. Great job nonetheless guys!

Having worked as a medic on an ambulance, I don’t understand why when they have a combative patient (due to a head injury in this case) they don’t use soft restraints such as wrapping the pt’s wrists to the side of the litter with gauze. Totally humane and very effective. In this case they had two crew members holding the patient down at one point bc of his combativeness, which wouldn’t have been necessary with the use of soft restraints. Total respect to the Coast Guard and not at all questioning their knowledge. Just curious. It was within SOP for us and completely effective. Even seemed to calm the patient down usually. Just a thought and question.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Coast Guard rescue swimmers don't have the autonomy to make those decisions (and probably don't have any anyway)...if I'm not mistaken they might only have very basic EMT training but don't quote me on that.

    • @lauramulhern5981

Lyricallyk I understand the concept there but soft restraints such as gauze fell under the SOP of a Basic EMT and most times a first responder. I reaa a size it’s all about law a a hits but it was to keep the patient from hurting themselves further. Paramedics could use chemical restraints. I was just surprised Basics and first responders couldn’t see them.

@@lauramulhern5981 I have never used gauze as a restraint - the risk to tourniquet is way too high (assuming you're referring to kerlix, etc?) I don't know how military medicine differs from civilian - I was never allowed to apply soft restraints without a physician order, even on the ambulance.

From what I've seen, the coast guard does have access to doctors on serious cases and a dr is available. They also have. korpsman, who has a higher level then a basic EMT. I believe a Paramedic level or Advanced emt. I've seen some episodes where the basic EMT really was not enough, because the maybe the person injured needed pain medicine or higher quality care. These Men and women hands down who rescue and save lives in the coast guard are real Hero's and the pilots. More medical training would be a greater advantage on each rescue though, with some flights 2 hour one-way rescues and back.

@@EmiliaJay When I said soft restraints I was referring to just a plain gauze that you would use to bandage a wound. I would never consider a tourniquet as a restraint. I’ve used this technique many times with a 100% success rate and 0% harm to a patient. I understand SOP’s are different everywhere. Just curious. Not to say one is right and one is wrong. Thank you for your service!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Big question? Why didn’t he have insurance under his Mom till 26? No workman’s Compensation for fishermen either? So sad. I was in the hospital for three night $26,000.
Not the ER or ambulance bills or doctor’s bills, those were more. Just had pneumonia. And very very good insurance.

Generally in order to get insurance under a parent and maintain it. He would need to be considered a tax dependent, claimed on parents tax return. Used to be if the dependent also a full time student, such as college.
If he was being paid to work on a fish boat he is filing his own taxes and not a dependent.
The boat's insurance could have insurance for the crew. If insurance was carried

Is there a cultural difference about responding to "Thank you"? In UK the standard response is "You're welcome". I've never heard a US person say that: would it be rude to say it? The standard response in US seems to be "You bet" which sounds illogical/irrelevant to my UK ears. What's it all about?

    • @braydonburkhardt

We use a lot of different responses to "thank you". I would say that "you're welcome" is usually used in a more professional instance while "you bet" is more relaxed. I do agree however that it doesn't make much sense. I think the most common answer would be "of course" which means the same thing.
