Sucks dude. I don’t think the button is the stop pin. Its internal theres 2, one for lockup and one for detent i think. I did a disassembly so you could check. Its also not a front flipper he didn’t design it to; but it works. But it sucks that it disengages. Scotch n things said the same thing

Good to know, glad I was wrong about that, internal stop pins are always the best, I should have watched your break down because without taking it apart it looks like the way so many others do there stop in the closed position that I don't like, thanks brotha

Since I don't particularly love the knife, it's perhaps easier for me to see that the flaw is fatal. If it were me, I would send it back for fix or refund. Folding knives replace fixed blades and can't be as stable. But they absolutely should not close of themselves in normal use. It shouldn't be sold at all. Period.

This cannot be fixed. It has to be redesigned with a much recessed button. It needs version 2.0 to mitigate the design flaw, even if it won’t be experienced by all users due to the fact that they have different hand shapes and sizes in addition to different way of gripping/purchasing on a given knife.

When Craig made the release video for this knife, I think he mentioned that the front flipper was a "it's not really supposed to be an opening method, but it's mentioned because you can do it" kinda thing. So I think the jimping is just for your thumb when the blade is deployed. But I do agree that he should have went ahead and done the tighter jimps, knowing that people would want a grippier front flipper.

That disengagement issue is exactly why I don't have the TwoSun Vandal I was trying out. Right hand, hammer grip, push cut through cardboard and once out of the cut it wanted to swing closed. Too bad; I loved that thing in the hand.

Love the grind on this blade, you rarely see thin hollow grinds like that especially ones done right(they don't have a spot that thickens up right above the edge, a lot if hollow grinds do that). Reminds me of my Gareth Bull Shami in Damasteel he made a while ago(2014 Iirc, he responded to my post about it). Its about 0.006 bte and it takes between 3/16 and 1/4 inch for it to get to 0.010 which is still pretty thin for most knives.
Shame about the lock disengagement, I like the design and the blade is gorgeous. If I could I would get one but I need to clear space first. So many great knives that just don't get any love.

I owned FSD #16 and I currently own FSD #73 and I can say for certain Craig has already made some improvements as production has gone on. On #73, the “front flipper” jimping is moved further back, resulting in the ability to front flip easily 100% of the time, vs #16 which was about a 50% front flipping success rate. The top flipper also has jimping that wraps further around to the flat of the flipper tab. I have had no issues with the lock disengaging, but I understand everyone’s hand geometry varies.

I wanted to buy one so bad and actually almost pulled the trigger on one on today's drop. But been waiting on a legit review first because of how pricey these are, and I'm not a fan of the cpm- 154 either so trying to get a 20cv model is even harder to get. Still an awesome flipper that I am passionately carrying. Once my factor arrives I’ll give it a rest and fidget with the factor while it’s in sharpening repair.

It was one of the concerns I have watching a few videos. I'm sure it's not a issue for most people that for the most part will just be fidgeting with it, and not really use it that hard. That's a real bummer man, hopefully Brown can figure out a way to revise it. Cause he definitively has the skill to do so just by designing this beauty. I really want to pick one up in the future, so I hope he finds a fix for people that plan on using it.

    B-E-A-utiful!
It appears the jimping on the blade slightly disformed the edge of the fuller groove. A slightly more narrow fuller groove would remedy that issue.
Unique locking system. Technically, it would be what, a Button Activated Liner Lock?
They could have inset the button with the similar milling as the pivot screw and not compromised the aesthetics.
Hell, you were willing to spend $775. For $50 more, you should have gotten the 20CV.

So..I immediately grabbed my FSD to see if this would happen with me. I just received it a few days ago and haven't gone after the cardboard yet...to be honest, I'm not sure if cutting cardboard should be a determining factor for a good EDC, but let's say the equivalent motion of a push cut should be.
I have big hands (XL) and this is not an issue for me. I moved my hand around with a tight grip to see what would cause the knife to unlock and found that if the base of my pointer finger was resting on the button when I gripped it tightly, it would consistently unlock.
It's uncomfortable for me to grip like this. For me to grab the knife for a push cut, I always tend to put my thumb on the spine for better leverage and this raises my hand enough off the button that it will not disengage.
Alternatively, if I wrap my hand around the knife, I find it uncomfortable to also wrap my thumb around in the opposite direction like your grip. Instead, I tend to bring my thumb up on top (same side as my fingers) to get more leverage with the additional pressure of my thumb forcing downward. In this grip, my hand is raised away from the button and I will not disengage the lock.
This grip is similar to how I was taught to hold the bar for bench pressing...more of a cup without my thumb wrapped around the bar. The ergos of the knife still provide a ton of stability and my hand won't slip off, even at the end of the stroke because my fingers are fully wrapped around the handle.
I can confirm if you disengage while holding it near the pivot, it will bite the hell out of you, but a simple change to your grip (which is standard for me) will alleviate the disengage and bite.
Give it a try and cut some more cardboard and let me know if you find this grip more stable and less tiring?

    • @markedfortime
      @markedfortime Před 2 lety

@TheStabbyCyclist with my large hands, I can't choke up on most knives unless they have a huge chiol, otherwise my finger will be in the sharp. The only time I personally choke up is for detail work.
Neaves was changing his grip all over during this cardboard session. It was clear his hand positioning that caused disengaging was when he was choked up and holding the knife like a hammer...which is not ergonomically consistent with cutting cardboard.

That's a shame, the milling is epic. I'm surprised the choke up problem wasn't noticed during production, the choil area is designed for that grip 🤔

I paid 98 for my riffle out the door and there isn't a thing not perfect about it.
You want premium bearing. Only thing I've done is tight the pivot "barely" once. Sharp like a scalpel

What kind of knife is this? The kind were you can flick/flipper the knife out easily but had the button release. What would recommend in this style that doesn’t have the issues you said as well as a cheap price.

Reason why after some affection for button lock, now I'm going back to anything else. Even traditional button lock is too easy to unlock by accident with those buttons sticking out.

I guess this is a problem of this day and age when knives are sold almost predominantly online. You lose the chance to handle it physically in brick and mortar store. This knife can be amazing for one type of hand and disastrous for another like Jarrad’s hand. You won’t know until you physically handle the knife and at least pretend its different use scenarios to discover if it will be a problem for you. The issue of the steel is a matter of preference and can be worked out by opting for s20v which is better any day of the week but with such price I guess CPM 154 should not be an option. In a $800 knife you can afford to offer your customers the most premium of steels out there with your knife.

I have FSD # 042 and there are some small details that are entirely different from yours. Primarily the jimping and the heel of the blade (front flipper area). If I choke up on the handle mine disengages as well if I really squeeze but in practical use I hold it further back. For "hard use" purposes I don't know why you would be choking up on it anyway. I only choke up on the blade for fine work, so I find the unintentional disengagement to be a non-issue for that use case. Lastly, your point about the plunge grind hitting the stop pin is entirely incorrect. It doesn't contact whatsoever. Not to mention that you weren't pointing at the stop pin. The stop pin is internal (watch Craig's video on Instagram). You were pointing to the lock button shaft (not sure what else to call it), which does not contact the blade at all.

It's brand new! Where's David c Anderson and nick shabazz. Finally I a got a steel worthy of the knife gods. Your in there but you have a modern metro head about you. Like Apollo

The double bounce tells me that the pivot needs micro adjustments to hit the perfect amount of friction to let it fall but not too fast. This happens due to lighter detents being overpowered by the opposite force upon closing. If I had to guess, they did it to make it easier to flip with such a tiny flipper tab.
