a jumpscare came when I was yawning and I almost choked

I imagine it's because the animatronics have fur/cloth on the outside and aren't all metal. Kind of like the chuck E cheese animatronics.
I always figured the thick cloth suits softened the blows thus making it sound more like it's a hard, soft object hitting the vents... not sure about the toys though... plastic would not change much...

FNAF 2 was the game that really put the animatronics' size into perspective. They are absolutely massive, assuming that Jeremy is standing at an avarage male height.
