The Busch Valentine commercial said that if Schmitt likes China owning Missouri farmland, he should be a broker for them.
"Instead, as a politician, he voted twice to let companies, controlled by China, to buy up Missouri farmland," the commercial says.
Mahoney reported that is accurate. In 2013, then-state Sen. Schmitt, voted to permit foreign ownership of farmland to any nation and not just China.
Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed the measure. But Schmitt and others successfully overrode it.
So how much Missouri land do Chinese businesses own? The commercial claims they own 146,000 acres worth so far. That's from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a national security think tank. Most of it, by the WH Group, formerly Smithfield Foods.
The USDA said that as of 2021, 1.1% of Missouri ag land is foreign-owned. The state limit is 1%. However, China is not among the top foreign owners. It's not even in the top five.
Missouri is not even close to the top among states, either.

Look Republicans and Democrats are different on one fundamental principle and again on their sets of values but first the principle.
Democrats believe the United States is a simple democracy or at least a simpler democracy. Republicans believe in the Republic or rather a representative democracy. If you forget which is which remember it's in the name.
Now for Democrats some are better than others but fundamentally they should all be relatively interchangeable in so far as they should stick to what polls from their districts say they should vote for.
Republicans are different. With a Republican you vote for the person. You vote for them based on their values and intelligence and entrust them the authority to make the difficult decisions in your stead assuming they will be privy to information you don't have available. They should be well informed and intelligent and righteous enough to make the best decision. Now does that describe any Republican running for office right now? It's a clown show and that's why you can't elect these people if you love the United States of America. The Republicans aren't sending their best. Or anybody's best for that matter.
