Hey guys! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller, here's with a breakdown on all things Rockabilly Guitar!
I think Brian Setzer's intro to Hillbilly Jazz Meltdown really epitomizes everything about rockabilly guitar licks: following the chord changes, sweet picking, a little hybrid picking action, bends, slides, and embellishing the minor pentatonic scale with notes from the mixolydian and blues scales.... its got it all! Plus it sounds even better with a little dirt, a slapjack delay, and a little reverb, which I've got courtesy of the Rumble Seat by Analog Alien!
In this video, i'm going to show you all how to play this awesome intro solo while giving you some basic music theory ideas on how this style of playing works. Then at 16:40, i'll give you all a Meet the Machines demo of the Rumble Seat, complete with all its awesome features!!!
Let me know what you want to see on the next episode of #weekendwankshop in the comments section below!

Thank you guys for learning Brian Setzer’s rockabilly secrets with me! Did you like the pedal demo at the end of the video? Want to see more gear stuff on my channel? Let me know!!!
Loved the demo - more, please!
Thank you for the lesson Ben, and the demo was good!
Loved the Setzer lesson! More rockabilly please! Enjoyed the pedal demo a little too much! Ended up pulling the trigger on the purchase this morning!
Awesome guitar player and teacher! He watches videos of famous guitarists to make sure his chords and notes are spot on to their music. I would put him up there with Jimmy Brown and Andy Aledort from GuitarWorld as a accurate transcriber.
Tony hawk tips and tricks old vcr is essential, let’s see uncle Ben on the half pipe,
Brian is criminally underrated. Some of the stuff he plays is absolutely terrifying.
Yet soothing and comforting.
My drummer used to always refer to Brian Setzer as "Swyngwie."
Hahaha totally stealing that!!!
funny as hell
I can’t lie, I’m totally going to steal that too!
😁😁😁
@@BenEller definitely repurposing this
Setzer is freaking awesome...doesn’t get nearly enough credit. Dude can flat out shred.
It never ceases to amaze me how much time he spends tearing it up above the 12th fret on a big chunky hollowbody too.
I was at a Nashville Predators Hockey game and Brian was seated behind me. They asked me some hockey questions as they noticed I am a loud huge fan. I got to shake his hand and thank him for bringing rockabilly back... at least twice. Later they showed him on the jumbo tron and he slapped the back of my head and accused me of selling him out. Great guy... we had a fun night!
Brian is so friggen good lol, I loved the Stray Cats as a kid and didn’t even realize how hard he shreds til I saw him with his orchestra. Gnarly player.
Love Brian Setzer. "I won't stand in your way" solo....... one of my all time faves.
Brian Setzer is GUITAR!! Even slowed down this sounds great!
Really like that you use the note names rather than fret numbers. Too many educators dumbing down the theory incase the audience gets lost. Thanks for broadening our minds.
You could use roman numeral analysis, too. I think that's easier, because it relates directly to the tonic scale. A lot of guitar players don't look at a fret and think letter name.
It’s not dumbing down, it’s simplifying. Y’know, for people who are beginners...people who are just learning...the people who take lessons...
what is this musical theory you speak of? the world outside my tabs website is so bright and scary...
With chromatics theres a Augmented or diminished chord a half step above or below every chord that makes perfect sense from the jazz club point of view. It really twist your ears around and makes the brain spin in your head. Great lesson.Love your channel.
This is such a great lesson and super fun to play on my Gretsch. I listened to the recording and holy smokes, that's fast! Not to mention the million other licks in that song.
"I want that church reverb"
"What denomination?"
lmao
That Lutheran tone is the secret
I love Brian’s tone, so clean and lush sounding!
Brian Setzer, that's right he's the guy who brought back old school R&R in the 80s and Swing in the early 2000's.
I just watched him and Dickey Betts live in 1984 and it’s really cool to see him play a tele
The song was really cool
Setzer’s earlier album “Knife Feels Like Justice” is SO freakin smooth🤘😌🎸🥁
I love the way you explain things! Very useful compared to other on-line instruction.....plus the humour!!!
I will say it again genius teacher and player Ben is! No one can explain it the way Ben does in my opinion !
I was a punker in highschool but my friend was a shredder and wed jam together and one day he played some setzer licks and I was blown the f away!
"Presbyterian reverb", I almost fell out of my chair. That shit was funny right there.
I love me so Setzer. He’s more a big band jazz/swing/rockabilly guy now, but if you dig into some Reverend Horton Heat you get that good rockabilly stuff.
Uncle Ben is at it again, but seriously Sweetwater is a great place to buy music stuff. I bought my first guitar on there.
Does it have many physical stores in the us, compared to guitar center?
@@Gotinha123 I think there is only 1 physical store, but its huge
I just got the LTD ps1000 with the p90s from them. I love it. I trust them.
Grabbed a les Paul studio Smokehouse in 2018. Phil, my rep, was great. It blows guitar center out of the water.
Their customer service is top tier
As everyone has probably said already, Sweetwater is awesome. Ordered some strings recently, they were super helpful and very customer satisfaction-oriented. Even sent some sweets along with with my strings 👍🏽 obviously I’m one happy nephew, Uncle Ben
Hey there uncle Ben! Feel free to go down this type of rabbit hole whenever the mood strikes you! I am all in!!! 🤠 Rockabilly isn’t just for breakfast anymore uncle Ben!
@Ben Eller - Darn you Uncle Ben, I ended up spending some money this weekend thanks to you! I think I am going to very much dig the pedal though! Haha! I clicked on your link so hopefully you get a little bank out of it, appreciate all you do here on the channel.
I just purchased a blue-on-black Fire-fly, part hollow body . It's stunning ! I also have a vintage Aries pro II, and 4 others...
I am late to the party but thanks for this lesson! Brian is from Massapequa LI where I grew up. Way back in 1990 I was a roadie for a Southern Rock cover band (Crawdaddy) and his brother, Gary, was the lead singer. He was also a great drummer. Brian came to one of the shows and sat in. He was very nice and hung out most of the night. Fast forward ten years and went with my wife to see his jazz orchestra which was great. She is a big fan of the Stray Cats so I am on a mission to learn this! Keep up the good work Ben and stay safe!
very nice of you to shout out everyone cool at the end
This is so sick. I'm bustin out my tele to give this lesson a solid learn!
Thanks Ben. Nice job. Always like to expand my playing and technique on my guitar. It’s funny I always liked the energy of Brian and his band. I can’t say I had a bunch of his music in my quiver but I did buy a CD some years ago. So now you are motivating me to work on this piece. Cool bro!
Bro bust out some Stray Cats! I thought for sure you woulda teased us with the Ren n Stimpy show theme song!
This is exactly what I was needing. You totally read my mind
Awesome, Awesome guitarist. Beard like a 70s playboy Minge, but you can certainly play my man. 🤟
Hahahaha I’ll take it!!!
Thanks for this! I always watch because you’re a great instructor and I always get something out of it even though it’s usually not exactly up my musical alley. This is! Excellent break down, as usual. Feel free to do more in the vein of jump blues, swing, rockabilly, etc...
Thanks dude!!!
I'm a simple guy. I see Brian Setzer in the video title, I click it
As always, great video. Ya just make it fun to learn guitar. And YES I'd sure love to see more gear stuff on your channel. You really do a nice job presenting the product. With my nice speakers this pedal sounds really good. Love that it has 3 things I need in one pedal. Space saver. The nice "reverb" amps only have one reverb knob. I dug the verb. The delay sounded really nice. Kinda reminded me of the MXR Carbon Copy. The controls are about the same. Sounded good. The overdrive sure has a lot of range. Man I am seriously considering this.
Click that link in my bio if ya choose to get one (or anything else from Sweetwater)!!! It’s rad!
Maaan, Brian is one of my favorites ever! Great video
Dude....Awesome!!!
Hello Ben, you are funny and super cool with a deep reserve of knowledge. Way to go. I'm gonna dig in on the lick. Thank you!
I think I'll learn to play my guitar plugged straight into an amp before I buy any pedals. It just seems like a good idea.
Fantastic lesson Ben! Love that Tele too the fretboard is beautiful!
Thanks for sharing and caring, Ben. 👍✨
One the most UNDERRATED guitar players there is!!!! Thank you for showing him the credit he deserves!
Great intro to following the chord changes. I for one, would like to see more "Hillbilly" type stuff in your videos - expand on Ford Thurston, Guthrie Trapp, Josh Smith, Danny Gatton, Brent Mason - share some left hand phrasing and position shifts. Killer stuff Uncle Ben, as per usual.
Awesome lesson Uncle B! You are 🔝🔝🔝Thanks a lot!
Everyone here should look up: 'Brian Setzer's Rockabilly Riot' on CZcams. It's a live show in Japan. Band is a trio. Setzer rocka-shreds so hard & makes it look like nuthin.
That is amazing. I can't even imagine holding it down like that for 90 mins....
Saw Brian at the Agua-calient'e .
The first show, was cancelled .We drove from Hollywood, to Palmsprings, walked up to the door and read: "Today's show, will be cancelled . Cool and the gang will be playing instead, on us . (Minus their lead singer ....)
I thought the show, was awful . ...It was a good 3 months later they finally came back, and the show was fantastic !
I spent alooot of time on the road though . We gambled while we were at the Casino, with $5.00 and we won $110.00 . (Never spend more than 10 minutes on a slot machine.) And then left ! It paid for our Gassoline ! Brian's band, was tiny . He did alot of solos . All fantastic !
😊👍🏻
I can see "The Punisher" all over that! Thanks again Uncle Ben!
This is how every sponsored video shud be done
As always fantastic 👍🎶
I like the surf guitar intro/background music. You should check out the SurfyBear from Surfy Industries.
The Reverend Horton Heat betta be next or else damnation awaits
That would be epic. The rev is mysterious.
O myyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy goodness man! good stuff...
that opening run was fuckin clean
my neighbors are gonna love it:]
You were already my fav YT guitar chanel but now you got Premium to me !
There is a chance those happy accidents were happy on purposes
The 3rd one drops to the minor 3rd (C) of A (descend to m3=sad).
The great musicians always modify licks from verse to verse so why not a subtle note or two within the licks
Slight color variation
One mistake yes
Two mistakes maybe
3? Hmmm I don’t know ... producer would probably say cmahn Bri - practice this sh1t
Anything’s paw+Sybille
Agreed. Brian rarely seems to include mistakes in studio recordings. And for him, this is a fairly slow tempo. My bet is that these are intentional changes.
The world.... may never know!!!
Love Bri xxxx
"Never major third to minor third."
Bam. There's the detail I've been missing for years.
This is pretty crazy but I just saw your comment, I’ve got a few videos about this topic, if you checkout my channel you’ll find “blues licks for rockabilly” and “that rockabilly sound : mixolydian and the minor third” where I address this stuff!
So glad I now know about Brian! Love this style of playing. Do you know if he is an influence of Steve Morse or Jimmy Herring at all?
Sweet solo at the end.
Thanks man!!!
Ben that is one cool tele
Daaang, That pedal is worth it just for that sweet ass overdrive!
You really can get a lot of tones from it
@@BenEller I came for your link and am buying the stand alone overdrive right now!
That was a soooweet lick at the beginning
Awesome!
So, the blue button be's a reverb/de-verb buddon? Noice!
my immediate thought was "that guy has a semi-hollow, he must know jazz stuff"
You're a smart feller Eller
Ben: "Leave the Humanity!"
Me: *plays sloppy shred solo*
DUDE IT HAS SO MUCH HUMANITY! haha, but love the video. Awesome you chose Brian Setzer :)
Why don't you have an ibanez hollow body AF75D guitar like me and Brian
Dude what are the intro songs for ww, I love this one. Its like Halloween surf
New subscriber and love your channel.
The pick slanting technique is something I know I've been missing. But since I've been playing so many years (40) my muscle memory is keeping me from breaking through that wall. I naturally learned alternate picking making that "u" pattern lifting after each pick.
The problem is that it's so ingrained in my muscle memory I can't get past that pick slanting wall. Are there any techniques to overcome bad habits I've had for decades?
You should use the DOD grunge overdrive. So sweet
That’s THE tone
great.off topic.can you do a rhythm lesson on johnny winter-nothing left"/?
f yeah ..thanks!
Try deconstructing some Imperial Triumphant! That's some really weird jazz-shit for ya
They rule
She’s Tight reference noted
I was really hoping the Grunge pedal was in this video
So, then it's: Guitar->DOD Grunge->Analog Alien Rumble Seat->Amp?
That’s the real key
Hey Ben do u still prefer Real Amp with pedals over the Amp modellers ?
Really depends on the scenario!!!!
Ren and Stimpy!
Fender Stratocaster Guitars matter.❤
Rumble seat is good but the Bubble Trousers is where its at!
FRANCIS!!!
I love this! No way in hell that I play this, but my love is genuine.
You can do eeeeeeet!!!!
Grreat as Always Young Uncle Ben!! Can i be as bold to say that ya EVH amp & its pedals are lgetting a bit dusty =)
Haha sounds like I need to give them some love and a dust rag!!! Ok!!
@@BenEller . You coul do a VANHALEN style vid compaing the EVH gears with the Digital Boom box. Maybe do a triple-whammy with ´normal ´pedal setup too!! Naturally whilst playing LITTLE DREAMER
you need a setup, hearing some strings fretting out.
I’m a stepdad and that is, in fact my speed.
"and meow"
I hear a lot of Cliff Gallop
anyone got an idea how to play rising force solo? whenever i try the sweep part in the beginning the notes bleed over. sorry for this being out of place but i dont where where else to ask
You have to do the rolling finger technique over the two notes, you kinda switch between press and unpress the e and b strings simultanously. Practice slow then speed up
@@Eduardot12345556 thanks, expected that he uses this technique but never saw anyone do it like that
Interesting
Mixolydian isn't a "tone" (you mean timbre), it's a mode.
A major third isn't a "normal" third. Using major and minor thirds connotes the blue note. The minor thirds are also "normal."
sounds great at stepdad speed
Be somebody 😎 I’ll try Uncle Ben. Only because you commanded. It’s kinda like, Have a nice day.
I always thought you were british ^^
Brian hybrid picks the shit out of nearly everything he plays
Right?!
Sweetwater is nice but THE FRET STORE is more cools.
Seems like a cool pedal...but the overdrive seems a little out of place. If you're doing rockabilly or surf.....even at it's lowest setting, it seemed kind of heavy handed. But, if you're just looking for a basic all in one, and aren't tied to any specific genre, then it might be just what the doctor ordered.
Good idea but didn't care for it o/d was the weak link but that's just my opinion.
Go Vols
I get it . I can copy you , if I play by ear .
