- We wandered all the way down to Glasgow, Scotland to find one of the best singers this side of the Atlantic, Iona Fyfe. My first visit to Glasgow with Josh Okeefe showed me the beauty of the northern half of the little island, and this time we learned some of its history. Iona took us to pubs where incredible young players carried on the folk traditions, banging out group jams that would make bluegrass players in the States feel right at home.
Her breadth of knowledge on the subject of Scots ballads is, to my small experience, unmatched. We chatted about the stories behind the songs, the tales they told, and the corresponding American versions that settlers from Scotland and Ireland brought with them. I hope to return one day and maybe visit her birthplace in Aberdeenshire, the setting for hundreds of ballads. This is also, coincidentally, following in the footsteps of Alan Lomax himself. research.culturalequity.org/ge...

Can't believe this doesn't have more views! One of the most moving songs I've heard.
I know this song through Martin Simpson. It's such an incredible story - the line about breaking her back still moves me.
An AMAZING performance .... I've no words, it moves me deeply
Lyrics are below! I'll try to get the chords down as well as soon as I can.
At Mill o’ Tifty, there bade a man
In the neighbourhood o’ Fyvie
He had a bonny dother fair,
An’ they ca’d her bonny Annie
Her bloom wis like the springin’ flooer
That greets the rosy morning,
Her innocence and graceful mien,
Her beauteous face adornin’
Lord Fyvie had a trumpeter,
An’ his name wis Andra Lammie
An’ he hid the airt tae win the hairt
O’ Mill o Tifty’s Annie
Lord Fyvie he rade by the door
Far dwelt sweet Tifty’s Annie
His trumpeter rode him afore
And his name wis Andra Lammie
Her mither ca’ed her tae the door
Come here tae me, my Annie
Did ye iver see sic a bonny man
Than the trumpeter o Fyvie?
Naething she said, but signing sore,
Twas alas for bonnie Annie
For she durst not own that her hairt wis won
By the trumpeter o’ Fyvie
The first time that this couple met,
It was in the wids o’ Fyvie
And his handsome face and flatterin tongue
Seen won the hairt o’ Annie
Her faither cam tae hear o this
And a letter wrote tae Fyvie
Tae tell his dother had been bewitched
By his servant Andra Lammie
Faan Fyvie hid the letter read
He ca’ed for Andra Lammie
Pray tell me fit is this ye’ve daen
Tae Tifty’s bonnie Annie
In wicked airt, I’ve play nae pairt
Nor thocht tae injure ony
It’s honest love, that won the hairt
O’ Tifty’s bonnie Annie
But tae Edinburgh, he wis sent
Tae brak his tie wi Annie
For they tocht that she wid seen forget
Her love for Andra Lammie
The next time that Lord Fyvie passed
He caught a sicht o Annie
An said “If ye cam o higher kin,
I wid maak ye my ain lady
Says she “yer lands are far and wide
And they are wonderous bonny
But I widna leave my ain true love
For aa the lands o’ Fyvie”
Then her faither struck her wonderous sore
And also did her mither,
Her sisters also took their score,
But wae be tae her brither
For her brither struck her wonderous sair
Wi cruel strokes and mony
And he’s broke her back across a stane
Jist for lovin Andra Lammie
Oh mither dear, mak me my bed
An’ lay my face tae Fyvie
It’s there I’ll lie and it’s there I’ll die
A’ for loving Andra lammie
Noo people here baith far and near
They pity Tifty’s Annie
Wha died for lovin one peer lad,
For lovin Andra Lammie
Give me an email! My version is an amalgam of Gordeanna McCulloch and Tom Spiers. Two legendary scots tradition bearers.

Thanks for these lyrics! I would definitely love the chords too!!
The Jean Redpath version of this song has always held a special place for me. Thanks for sharing.
It’s awesome how he watches her sing
Well sung. Lovely to hear you. Best.
I grew up in a family which collected long form ballads in Ireland, Cumbria and Scotland. This was always one of my favorites, and this is a really nice setting and performance. Many many thanks for posting this! Do you know about the ghost story associated with Andrew Lammie? After Annie's killing, he fled to Canada, where he died. A few years after, Lord Fyvie was was awakened by a trumpet blast and Andrew's ghost was standing at the foot of his bed. Lord Fyvie was found dead in the morning. From then on, the ghost appeared and the trumpet her throughout the castle, at the death of each Lord Fyvie, up into the 1960s, was the last I heard of it.
This shit her damn near brought a grown ass man to tears. This needs to be on disney
hah, that's kind of the dream gig for traditional scottish singers, landing disney gigs! me and Iona actually talked about that.

Enchanting
Man, this is golden.
Reminds me of the singing at my local pub in Ireland.
Incredible
I love it
A very similar melody to Geordie, (child 209), at leasy in the way Anais Mitchell sings it. This is utterly beautiful.
This is beautiful
Ace 😉fit is it wee Fyvie and gitten songs written aboot it.
the ambulance sirens at 3:56 are sick with the song bro
I was only in Ireland for a week. This makes me miss it so much
It's a Scottish song and the girl singing clearly says she's from Aberdeen which is in Scotland.
@@terrymcinnes01 go easy on my man here, Celtic cultures all have a familiar feeling to us Americans lol.
Seriously
Some music makes me close to cutting onions and I haven’t drank alcohol for years. The word class is over used, but not in this case.
long lost sister?
This would be much better with just her voice alone
i disagree soooo much! thanks for listening tho!
