  • I believe this to be the parasite Sacculina carcini hosting in an emerald crab. This is often what people refer to as zombie crabs or zombie crab disease. In short the parasite bites the crab and kills it all the while taking over total control of its body. Read more about this at: www.aquariumspeed.com/topic/61...

While it does change the chemistry of a male crab so it acts more female and will behave as such, Sacculina does not kill the crab at all. The worst it does is castrate the males and infects females normally, thus making the crab infertile in both cases and basically uses the crab to get it's own eggs out to other hosts. Not only that, it also stops the molting process of the crab which means it cannot regrow a severed claw. While this severely reduces the crab's survival chances, it still does not directly kill the crab.
Sacculina doesn't even bite the crab; when the larva finds the crab, it injects itself into a joint in the crab's shell and grows inside until it emerges into the parasite you see in the video. That being said, it has pretty serious repercussions when it comes to the species of crab continuing to breed.
