Our Eye-Opening 24 Hours in CHINA in 2023 (has Shanghai changed?)

  • We visited Shanghai for the first time in 2016 and have since been there three times. However, our last visit was in 2018, and A LOT has happened since then, in the world overall but in China especially.
Not only that, but the relationship between the West and China has grown increasingly strained over the last few years, especially between the United States and the PRC over issues like Taiwan, human rights, covid, climate change, the South China Sea, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
On our way back toward Europe for summer from Asia, the best flight deal ended up being on China Eastern with an overnight layover in Shanghai. We decided to seize the opportunity and revisit a city we had an amazing time in in 2016 and 2018, but we expected had changed a lot since last time...

As a foreigner living in Shanghai, it's weird to see how people are scared or still have all these misconceptions and stereotypes about life in China, mostly because of the Western media which most foreigners in China still consume but I guess it doesn't sink in with us because we can tell what the reality of the country is. Honestly, the "high-tension" relationship between the US-China is completely unobservable. Glad to know you had a great time in Shanghai, come back soon!

Yep, I just visited it for the 2nd time in my life about a month ago. The 1st time was back in 2007 before the iPhone came out. It was some experience to ride that Maglev traveling at 431kph! This time around, it was limited to only 300kph to conserve energy. I later experienced the 350kph conventional highspeed train when traveling from Shenzhen to Guangzhou which took only about half hour. It's interesting there's now a subway line that connects Pudong airport to the rest of Shanghai but i think it takes close to an hour to get to the same maglev station from the airport. Most people still take the subway / metro because it's so much cheaper. Another cool thing I experienced was going from Shanghai all the way to the heart of Suzhou only by subway / metro. We took Shanghai Metro Line 11 to Kunshan Huaqiao Station and transferred to a brand new Suzhou metro line there. The new Suzhou metro train set was fully autonomous. It was surreal.

I remember back then that the cities really come to life at night when people knock off from work, and the restaurants and nightlife starts up, especially after the heat of the day in summer, when people come out in the cooler evenings. Over this time, I’ve also been really sad to see how that country is depicted in the western media. No wonder people are terrified of China, based on what is selectively reported. Yo Oskar & Dan. I just spent 5 days in Shanghai last week. I was granted the free 144hr visa on arrival (free of charge.) Chinese immigration were professional and friendly. I must admit I did use a VPN in China in order to use social media. I spent 5 nights in a $15AUD hostel where the Chinese guys in dorm where extremely friendly , and we even went out clubbing one night. Throughout those 5 days the Chinese were so friendly and 2 Chinese women even asked if I want to go on the century park electric boats with them , which was a great experience. Some of my favourites places in Shanghai were century park , the Bund , Yu Garden and Zhujiaojiao. I am so excited to re visit China and explore many other cities. Guys it’s disappointing seeing you eat a tourist restaurant imo yous should eat at a traditional canteen.

China is actually very diverse (its Diversity index is on par with the US even with the official measure rather than the real one, which is far higher). There are 56 National Minorities but 180 unofficial ones -as 120 of them were lumped together into one, as the Han ethnic group, despite this one group speaking 200 languages (and even more dialects) and the difference in looks, culture, dress, cuisine and DNA -overnight it became the worlds largest ethnic group when it was 'created' in the 1960s. There are 40-400 cuisines, 300 languages, 6 major religions (though the world's largest percentage of atheists) and every type of lifestyle and culture made by the most diverse landscapes in one country, from jungle tribes to sea gipsies, Tibetan monks to Islamic clerics, desert caravans to African traders, city dwellers to reindeer herders, cowboys to cowgirls. The cities hold random things like the world's biggest drag and dancehall scene, to hanfu hipsters, to 200,000 eco groups, to the world's largest contemporary art market and scene. In short China is completely different to Western perceptions, who assume it's more North Korea than New York.

The traditional clothing is not the same (just look at the vastly differing wedding dress styles between provinces, as a pointer to the former national costumes), and the 'love of red' is a trend, just like fashion would have been in Europe. Pretty much all the unifying aspects one could apply the same to the whole of Europe (or any subcontinent), from Christianity to architecture, to musical instruments to religious festivals. Nice video!
I went back to China a month ago and it was an interesting experience, some of the major attractions I went to were extremely crowded and I was often pushed around by strangers, not to mention the strong smell of smoke near buildings and inside taxis which bothered me A LOT. The weather was scorching hot too, days in Beijing over 40 celcius, even hotter than Dubai where we flew in from(seriously!)
Outside of that, I got to see lots of China's unique and otherworldly natural beauty as well as many famous attractions (Great Wall, Pandas, etc.), had a great time overall exploring more parts of the country :D

@@jihadallah4337I visited China during June when the Chinese kids were studying for final exams(at least in Beijing), hopefully making places less crowded. However my visit in Beijing was during the annual Dragon Boat Festival Holiday or Duanwujie(unfortunately) making areas like Summer Palace packed with people as kids are out of school for the weekend. I absolutely agree with you in visiting during spring or autumn as the heat in Beijing in summer was unbearable 😅

New subscriber here! I appreciate your unique perspective on traveling and love your views on China. Spot on! I'm an American living in Hong Kong for 12 years and I love traveling in the greater China cities. I started traveling solo in 2009 visiting Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing and I have loved China since. I have also traveled with my native Chinese girlfriends and that of course is the best since they know the language and I don't. I agree that traveling changes your perspective because you realise the bias in media and from people who lack the direct experience of getting to know people and places for yourself. It has been quite a few years since I visited Shanghai but I will return in a few days and so looking forward. Thanks for sharing some gems in the city and happy trails!

Shanghai is always been a porthole to the world. Even before communist times, when there were different quarters for the different countries like the British and the Americans that had legations there. Hence the fascinating fusion of colonial, Chinese, and western modern. Good vid lads.

We were tourists in China in 2010 - spent three days in Shanghai. Returned for one day in 2016 (cruise stop). Glad to see the City was still sparkling and open when you were there.
When we visited Shanghai I was struck by the strong sense of community, even in giant cities. I took a stroll through Zhongshan Park and saw people singing in groups, dancing, doing Tai Chi - keeps people connected (and probably happier).

yes, It is true, when I was living in Hangzhou which is around 180 KM from Shanghai, the first time I ever talked to foreigners was in May 2019. and Hangzhou is a big city not the countryside. there were 600 000 foreigners living in China in 2018, yeah, it makes sense to me.

Thank you Oskar & Dan for posting and sharing your positive experiences in Shanghai. This is the 1st video of yours that I've seen. Your dialogue suggests this is the 4th time you're traveled to Shanghai and that you've been to a number of other countries (at least 19 to 100) including places like Sweden and Tashkent, Uzbekistan. When I got to the @24:00 mark, I just had to stop and post the following feedback comments:
How can you even say China is insanely homogenous? That’s like saying Europe is insanely homogenous. Just in the province of Yunnan (which your map @24:06 didn’t even highlight, the locals claimed there are over 200 dialects / languages but the academics narrowed it down to 22. That’s just a single province and China has 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four municipalities, and two special administrative regions (SAR). Note that I did not include Taiwan (aka The Republic of China). In fact, without the use of the “common language / dialect” or Mandarin, Chinese from different parts of the same province would not be able to have meaningful conversations with each other.
@24:22. Yes, that’s been my experience there also. I have not had people complain to me when I use my camera(s) during my past trips there.
@1:23. Regarding the claim that China is the origin of you know what, there are a number of reputable studies that found antibodies to the virus in US and Italian blood banks that date back months earlier than the 1st (Dec, 2019) reports of it from China. E.g. do a search for Virus in Italy, September 2019. Or Fort Detrick. Or Gain of Function. Remember the Spanish Flu of 1918? Well, it did not originate from Spain.
Yes, the sentiment about China has changed a lot in the West. Have you ever wondered why? Why has Western media been going overdrive in pushing out anti-China narratives? You should definitely do a deep dive on that. As you can probably tell from just 24 hours in Shanghai - a tiny part of China - the Western media has been pushing out crap about China. The big question is WHY???
@2:30 It’s kind of funny how I’m actually doing the opposite. I’m complaining that you are just repeating a lot of the Western propaganda or spin with regard to China.
@4:30 About the taxi driver, the English language, people’s understanding / perceptions of the world, I’m puzzled by that. Most taxi drivers (especially in Shanghai) will know more than just 3 words of English. As your video demonstrates, the Shanghai subway has English signs and makes announcements in English. There are tons of Western brands with video billboard advertisements all over Shanghai. I can challenge you that when I was growing up as a boy in 1970s China, I learned more about the rest of the world than my counterpart in the US. I watched movies and TV shows from Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia, Africa, North and South America so I was not shocked at all (but still excited and curious) when I did meet them later during the 1980s in NYC.
Overall, I did enjoy this video of yours. I applaud your open minds and positive attitudes.
