My Brit brother living in the USA, volunteered to coach lacrosse at the local high-school, having been a high-level player. He soon suspended the 'star player' for lack of on-field and training discipline. The kid was a know-all 'Star' and had been treated as such. My brother was practically attacked in the car-park by many of the parents. 'He's our star player!' Rick just said, 'Tough. Until he learns, he's on the bench.' It was such an issue that the School Board became involved, the Community Leaders, all sorts. He was ostracised in some local stores. It went totally crazy until Rick just walked into the School office and quit, leaving them with ringing ears and no coach.. Many of the other players, though, were pleased he took the stance.

My husband coached youth leagues for 21 years. I can tell you what he would have done in order.
    1. Told the kid to get to the sideline immediately.
    2. If he refused he would inform him that if he didn't he would not play for the next few games..
    3. If the kid refused and the parents were present he would have asked them to get him off the field, He would have told them they have 5 seconds to get him off the field or he was off the team.
    4. If they didn't and although it would have hurt the other kids for something they didn't do, he would have stopped and forfeited the game AND the kid would be off the team.
    5. Then on the sidelines and very LOUDLY he would have thanked ALL the other kids for being gentlemen, playing with sportsmanship and thanked their parents for supporting their children, and explained why he did it. A little public shaming of both the kid and his parents would maybe do some good.
    6. Then because the other kids were probably feeling down, he would have taken all of them minus the brat, to go get ice cream.
    7. If the parents went to the league, they would have gotten nowhere because my husband was usually League or Asst. League Director.
To those who think the coaches should have just dragged him off the field: although that would be feel so good and teach the brat a lesson, unfortunately the same assholes who raised this kid would also probably sue you at the drop of a hat and the legal system being what it is, would probably have thrown my husband in jail.

Oh goodness, if assholes raised this child, as you suggest, how could MORE ADULTS ACTING LIKE ASSHOLES in any way help the situation? This child needs help with coping, quite possibly nothing his parents ever taught him. Embarrassing or physically hurting a child does not teach a child how to cope.
Sad he had unfit parents, but please let's not shame a child for having a lousy childhood. Still time to help this child with the skills he will need to be successful.

    • @NameLast-mx5nu

behavior always happens for a reason ( not necessarily poor parenting, btw). Firm limits are critical. It is amazing how difficult it is for most adults to understand how to enforce this WITHOUT behaving like assholes. Enforcing rules can be impersonal, if the ADULTS in charge can hang on to their adulthood.
See the above post from the lady whose spouse was a coach. Kid doesn't have the appropriate coping skills to participate? That's a shame, nonetheless , he cannot tantrum here. game is called.

I love how there are adults having a problem with a kid they know nothing about who may have mental issues etc. So instead of automatically passing judgement or picking on a kid they should learn that maybe they are actually the kid themselves and should consider seeking therapy. I mean who gets triggered by a kid with issues when they are a grown ass adult?? Would hate to spill the milk at this guys cage. #givegrumpymankidasnickers

@@whodey5103 I had to rewatch the video to make sure...but I'm still not seeing the part where anyone "gets triggered" as you say. But I do like how you pulled the "mental issues" card, but you should know that there are leagues for special needs children that exist for that exact reason so I'm gonna have to say a mental issue is most likely not the case here. This is most likely a case of a kid who got upset because he was knocked over in "FLAG FOOTBALL" and decided to try the old "hold your breath"(metaphorically speaking) method that children use when they don't get what they want. I see this behavior on the regular through my own childs sports games. A lot of times, not always, that behavior is exhibited from the children who's parents have been catering to their childs every needs and wants, for example...I heard a high school parent arguing with the football coach over playing time because their son was 3rd string...the parent thought that everyone should get a fair and equal amount of playing time...regardless of skill. In which case... anyone with half a brain knows that will only lead to entitlement issues accompanied by a lack of desire to compete in the real world which leads to poor work performance, expectations of rewards without work(more entitlement), and can even lead to depression, anxiety, loss of self worth, and severe health issues brought on by all of the above. Either way...people need to be smarter when the are dealing with children(you're right about that), but be smarter by saying "No" when no is warranted, and not giving in because the child decides they want something different and because it's just easier to say "yes". Could you imagine if this child was allowed to behave this way his whole life into adulthood...now imagine him on an NFL field at the age of 24 pulling this same thing because nobody corrected it 12 years earlier...I can see it, and I'm not even psychic. You can look at some professional players and their actions on the field now and tell they were always told "yes" to everything they wanted...this behavior may work for a select few, but the majority are hit with a brick wall when they make it to real life scenarios in their adulthood

Best thing to do is keep your responses to them very basic, not question them, not disagree with them, give them time and grab something for them to drink. I coached football for 22 years, when I first started, it was fun. As time went on though, the kids changed. It’s like discipline at home went out the window. When I started coaching I may have had one or two kids on my team from a single parent family. By the time I retired, it was the other way around. I had maybe two or three kids with both their biological parents. The rest of them I had two fathers,or two mothers, and no discipline. They expected me as a coach to do that. I just couldn’t take it anymore. No discipline, no respect, and everyone blamed me, for not being able to control my players. It’s the parents people or the lack of. Even the parents, would turn on me if I disciplined the children. By not letting them play, maybe they come to one practice a week and then they couldn’t understand and the parents couldn’t understand why I would not let them play. They would say I pay good money for this. You couldn’t come to reason with them. Parents look yourself in the mirror.

Yessir Coach! I agree. Although most of my teams existed of kids from single (mom) parented households. Latch key dads would show up to GAMES (ONLY) talking smack the entire game and brag about their "sons" when they played well; although they were a consistent NO SHOW at practices. I too couldn't take it anymore and moved on when my Son started his D1 college football career. Great point Coach on "No discipline, No Respect" and unable to follow directions is the M.O. for this generation of youth. It's Sad!

I tried to counteract this by essentially letting the parents know I owned their kids lives between the lines. Most understood and respected it, but there was way too big of a sizeable minority that made it unviable. I was willing to tame the wild beasts and often those are the most rewarding done successfully but I'm not wrangling them with my hands tied behind my back and I'm not gonna coddle them so I gave up on that.

Yeah I had a speech that I gave to all my kids at the beginning of the season, I told them ,in time to come some of you were going to go different directions than others ,some of you will go in a direction drugs alcohol, and chaos, and some of you will go in the direction of working hard and raising a family and of course finishing your school. I had children do the same thing, go to jail for drugs, crash their cars while drinking and driving, and of course don’t forget suicide. I’ve lost four of the kids to all of the above. They were good kids too. They just didn’t have the guidance necessary to survive this crazy world. It’s an Honor when I have them walk up to me and pat my head and say hi coach. I have to take a double look in order to recognize them. Some with families, some went to going to college. Two of them played good college ball. I’m proud of them all. It was a hard part of my life but I would do it all over again.
