  • You may recall the Gibeanites from the Book of Joshua who were assigned the duty of water-bearers as punishment for tricking the Israelites. In this episode of "Basics of Biblical Archaeology," Dr. Doug Petrovich shows us the archaeological evidence they left behind.
This is part 7 of a 16 part series entitled "Basics of Biblical Archaeology."

      John 2:10
[10]And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
Those better able to control fermentation process make better wine?
Can wine be dehydrated into powder and then added to water to reconstitute?
After drinkers are drunk, it would only need to taste like wine to drinkers already drunk and unable to detect if getting drunker, so no need to be alcoholic when reconstituted?

Are the rooms cut out in the underground springs surrounding Jerusalem made about same time as Gibeonites?
Saw the ones in valleys between Mount of Olives and Temple Mount flowing south as one, Southern end of Temple Mount above valley of Gehenna flowing East as another, and on the West side of Jerusalem at Lifta flowing West as 3rd.

14:16 Why would you think the glossy tunnel sides indicate plaster?? That immediately sounds wrong!
Does the plaster somehow magically make the underlying rock smooth and glossy? And even if that were true, why is the glossy section only be at the sides ,and tapering off near the top and bottom of the strip?
This is very obviously wear from people's hands! They were touching or even sliding their hands on the wall as they walked.

I thought wine was fermented grape juice. Is that not the case?

    • @bookofrevelation4924
      @bookofrevelation4924 Před 8 měsíci +5

      Why are you asking?
Yes, wine is fermented grape juice as most common. Any fruit can be fermented into alcohol wine, but fermentation must be in a controlled manner to prevent other bacteria that converts fermented alcohol further into vinegar.

@@bookofrevelation4924 i think he is asking because lots of seminaries teach it was grape juice. Jesus's first miracle, not alcoholic wine. Because it was a lot of wine He created. It was unclear to me what exactly he was saying, that's why i looked in the comments.

@@davidpotter7484 thanks for replying with clarification.
I did think about the miracle of water changed to wine as related. I had to ponder what the question was addressing because the Professor says wine is made by fermentation of grapes, but then soon after says the wine is sealed to prevent fermentation, which is confusing also because sealing wine after fermentation is to a certain point to stop fermentation and begin aging process to prevent alcohol changing into vinegar as many Old Wine does isn't well known.

@@bookofrevelation4924 most people would have said it differently. Sealing the wine to stop it from turning to vinegar. Wine vinegar has been used as medicine and for cooking for millennia.

@@bookofrevelation4924 Thank you for the response. I was asking because what I heard Dr. Petrovich say was that the wine was kept from fermenting. I took that as being fresh grape juice being put into the containers. Since there is a fermentation process that must occur, and a little olive oil on top of the jars in the pits can keep it from continuing, I have to assume that the fermentation process that does occur happens outside and before the wine is stored. Perhaps in wine skins, like the New Testament refers to. Or, maybe I missed Dr. Petrovich reference how the grape juice is first fermented. Interesting information on a topic I don't know much about. Thanks for the help!

Great question, I put it in search bar and found this in an article, said corks were used some by Romans, but too hard to get enough needed for use at those times.
      👇
However, resins, reeds, oils and rags were very poor at preventing oxidation, which causes the alcohol in wine to form acetic acid, also known as vinegar. This led to more unusual methods being used. German winemakers put rocks into barrels to raise the level of liquids and reduce the amount of air. Many winemakers put olive oil or resin directly into the wine containers as well as using it to seal the opening. The oils would float on the top of the wine, and prevented the wine coming into contact with the oxygen in the air. However, after a certain period of time this oil would turn rancid too. When serving, cotton or cloth was dipped into the container to absorb some of the oil, and a small glass was then poured to remove the oil from the top before drinking could occur. In what is widely believed to be the seminal work on wine storage, the author George Taber states that “the custom of tasting wine before serving started as a way of making sure all the oil was gone”.
