Its not my cousin, but my little brother, who was gay, passed away a few years ago from filling up his arms, the shit was laced. This song brings back memories and so many emotions. It's beautiful
It was my fiance... stole checks, wrecked cars, now we never shot up but snorted our way to poverty.... she was clean 19 months... she borrowed my car while I was at work... after finally getting a ride home i found her dead laying in bed... Pointlessly attempting cpr... and with each breath I could feel her lungs filling. Hope, happiness and belonging exited as I beat on her chest... Bargaining with whomever could answer my prayers.. Ambulance was here in 3 mins, declaring her dead after 2 rounds of cpr... my drugs still on the nightstand mocking me as they held me back, with a false sense of restraint while they took it for tests.... And to think 15 min before, i had been upset with her bc she wasn't there to pick me... her parents showed up just in time to watch her getting carried out in a bag... as I cried still pleading and begging for miracles. I was in the process of trying to quit... she had given me the ultimatum and timeline... it was my stuff she had gotten into and died from... the guilt and hatred I have for myself is real. 3 years ago now. She will always be my yellow bird... (To anyone/everyone reading... I'm not looking for sympathy or kind words... and ESPECIALLY don't need to be reminded/told it's not on me... or my fault... I was here, it was my relationship, I know exactly whose feet its at.... but hey it just helps to write it down sometimes and I speak of her so she's not forgotten)
I bought this album on release... I was 17 when it came out and I just released what "wrote bad checks just to fill your arms" means. Gosh. Very sorry about your little brother. Hope you're well.
I just found this song today and it made me cry so hard. As a queer person who knows how it feels to not want to be alive the lyrics hit so close to home
I just wish I had one friend that was a bright eyes fan, everyone I know think they are wack and depressing. But that just tells me they don't listen to the lyrics, or none of them are deep enough to understand. I will probably never get to go to a concert or share this with anyone. It's just a part of me that no one will ever understand except connor
I'm a guy from an entirely different country. I believe when Conor wrote this, it's quite likely he didn't know that an australian labourer would years later be driving to work singing the words with chills down his spine and tears in his eyes. Perfect.
I remember buying this album in 2006 in high school and listening to it everyday for two years. It’s still such a treasure to come back too. As a working musician and music producer, Conor Oberst was always a huge inspiration. 18 years later this still hits.
as a die hard Bright Eyes fan (saw them twice last year- once at Radio City Music Hall) - i have to say this version of Poison Oak is hands down the best one Ive ever seen them do. In Conor i believe!
this bring me back to my hauntingly romantic days of my early 20's, living to get as drunk as i could, just to feel sorry for myself in my depression over myself.
I love this song He was my first concert in 2009 when I was 9 and no show will ever be as freaking awesome as that was even though I couldn't see as anything
I'd be the guy in the background who said "play it again" at the end of the song. It is just so good... I can listen to it over and over and over again...
This guy is amazing, amazing musician. I can't think of any other artist that has so many songs that I can relate to so easily. I hope your around for along time Brighteyes!
I still cant get over the fact that I havent run into him at a random bar to get to know him, propose to him und spend the rest of my life with my soul mate. have been fan girling since fevers & mirrors
I think I saw someone say he was upset to play in Texas, but there all deserving of love and by saying that your saying other places are bad but he happily plays in Chicago.
I'm not the kind of girl that cries over everything that makes me sad or emotional. I can control what I feel. Always. But I heard this and in like 15 seconds my throat closed and my eyes were starting to fill with tears. That made me think that when/if I ever get to hear this song live I will absolutely break...
My child's father hung himself about 5 years ago. I like to sing this out loud to him with jack on my breath, but moreso we are all insecure locked up and ashamed about something, I know I am. I just wanna go to a concert, the one time I could be myself, take a shot, and scream the lyrics from my heart. This is the shit that ignites what I buried inside
Dylan Ledford You're awesome Dylan :) ! RCSJ11 The term "ladyboy" is an extremely disrespectful term to use when referring to transgenders/transsexuals, words can hurt and what you're saying can be triggering to a lot of people, leave a positive impact (:
@callen1369 Thanks callen, I think I'll check out the People's Key next. I heard a couple songs off that album already and they were both good. My favorite so far is Cassadaga though.
@21madmethod Digital Ash is their finest album. It's the hardest to get into. But seriously, listen to it enough and it'll grow on you more than any album you've ever heard.
@21madmethod Anything from Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil to People's Key is either great or amazing. To me, some of the earlier stuff seemed too angsty and wreaked of whiny teenager (the song "waste of paint"). People's key might be my favorite, though. They really changed their sound.
It irritates me to no end that the crowd is trying to record the concert on a phone. I think it is better to have remembered the show for the experience. Live in the moment, its live music. It's Beautiful.
@junoskiner or that a guy in Iceland, just out of rehab, cries in the car listening to every one of his albums. Conor is my hero. He is also my downfall.
@metalheadjay666 may look dumb but who wouldn't want a video of bright eyes from a show they were at it's not like it's any worse than a shitty cell phone viideo
Love that guy that says "play it again" immediately.
'I was young enough... I still believed in war' gets me every time

@@alpacapunch9238 Takes hella big balls to put that story out there man, big respect.

That guy on the slide guitar thing is absolutely KILLING IT! One of the best live versions!
mike mogis, a true genius
as a trans person this song fucking makes me sob every single time man, Conor's songwriting hits so heavily it's life saving
He's said it's about his gay cousin who killed himself aged 23. It makes me think of my trans friend I lost a few years ago. I cling to this song
I just found this song today and it made me cry so hard. As a queer person who knows how it feels to not want to be alive the lyrics hit so close to home
this specific performance of this song never fails to giveme goosebumps. Connor is an amazing musician

Best poison oak live performance.

“and you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm” and “i’m glad you got away but i’m still stuck out here” gets me everytime
Elliott Smith and Conor would have been awesome together
Calm down, I can only get so depressed.
Imagine…
Favorite Bright Eyes track. It’s always so good live.
this bring me back to my hauntingly romantic days of my early 20's, living to get as drunk as i could, just to feel sorry for myself in my depression over myself.
This has got to be one of my favorite songs. When Conor sings you feel it. I wish they'd come to vegas
i opened my mouth to see what i thought, and the first thing that came to mind was "just incredible"
how can you here this and not feel anything
hear*
I love this song
He was my first concert in 2009 when I was 9 and no show will ever be as freaking awesome as that was even though I couldn't see as anything
I love how he always changes up the lyrics a bit when they're playing live.
I'd be the guy in the background who said "play it again" at the end of the song. It is just so good... I can listen to it over and over and over again...

What a childhood...and what a way to remember it.
was resting my elbow on my desk and thought i felt my phone vibrating, realised i was just shivering ha ha
I still cant get over the fact that I havent run into him at a random bar to get to know him, propose to him und spend the rest of my life with my soul mate. have been fan girling since fevers & mirrors
Conor has a way with words that no other human has. His lyrics are deeper than the ocean.
I think I saw someone say he was upset to play in Texas, but there all deserving of love and by saying that your saying other places are bad but he happily plays in Chicago.
crying on my desk rn
God dam almost made me cry. Thanks conor
Noch ein starker song. Geht mir immer durch und durch. Live super interessant, aber als Studiversion teilweise noch packender. Chapeau, CO
this song always gives me the chills
Love this guy
Theheck, this video should be watched more !! So powerful.. Conor will always be the only one that could put this off.
8 Conor winks at the enthusiastic fan upfront in the red dress. Very rock n rolly cool of him
nothing quite like conner behaving and playing his discography in a way that even HE can appreciate
One of the best songs ever.
@Masteryre so true I had a single tear rolling down my cheek when I heard it live...beautiful :)
This is thoroughly distracting me from studying for exams. And Im cool with that
You're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for.
I'm not the kind of girl that cries over everything that makes me sad or emotional. I can control what I feel. Always. I still can't get through this song without tears.

I find it ironic that I have poison oak right now, from sleeping outside, in the woods with my transsexual, girlfriend.
I dont know why you put so much detail into that
Oziel Esparza Because what's the point of dating a ladyboy if you don't tell everyone about it?
RCSJ11 Of course, how could I have forgotten. I have recently been 20 minutes away from my homosexual, trans-sexual friend myself.
Dylan Ledford You're awesome Dylan :) !
RCSJ11 The term "ladyboy" is an extremely disrespectful term to use when referring to transgenders/transsexuals, words can hurt and what you're saying can be triggering to a lot of people, leave a positive impact (:
Samantha Garrison god forbid someone gets.... TRIGGERED
Best version
I'll always love you Cassaundra.
But i am glad you got away.
Watch this without getting chills... I dare you!
I got zero chills
Linda, linda!
Alessandra Aranda my ex was named Linda, she showed me this song now I can’t forget her. It’s been 8 years
dang.
*Pretty damn sure at 2:28 Conor winks at the enthusiastic fan upfront in the red dress. Very rock n roll
Good Lord! Mike Mogis is making those strings scream!
The Peoples Key is Gold
“Play it again!”
that voiceeeee
I still believed in war
Not necessarily! He was in Switzerland a few years ago, I think :) Greetings from Serbia ;)
i'm italian, i won't ever be able to see him live and this kills me
In ritardo, ti capisco

whats the instrument at 1.22?
4:32 "play it again" .
It irritates me to no end that the crowd is trying to record the concert on a phone. I think it is better to have remembered the show for the experience.
Live in the moment, its live music. It's Beautiful.
Viva Mogis, man!
Can anyone tell me the model of the Martin that Conor is playing?
you have no soul if doesnt make you cry
"play it again"
lol AOL
I think it's a Martin 000-18
I always thought that a yellow bird was someone that saves you from yourself.
Oh and boy can he Play wonderful Spine Tingling stuff
This song is about Conor’s cousin who killed himself. 💔🖤🖤
Thought it was about his brother? Either way, powerful song.
what type of instrument is that guitar slide thing.
A pedal steel guitar
+Nitish Chauhan I'm pretty sure it's lap steel guitar. Pedal steel is bigger
@junoskiner Or a family man from New York who somehow gravitates to these videos when he has had something or two to drink
I wish they would tour just one last time. I found out about this band too late and I feel I will never see them live...
TommyCycles how bout now
4:30 sounds like toad ya-hoo
@junoskiner or that a guy in Iceland, just out of rehab, cries in the car listening to every one of his albums.
Conor is my hero. He is also my downfall.
@21madmethod LIFTED OR THE STORY IS IN THE SOIL
What is this about?
I have a feeling it's about someone close to him dying.
Pretty sure its about his friend committing suicide.
Angelina Sheppard it’s about his cousin who killed himself. So beautiful and emotional. I love this song with my whole heart
I cast masomito’s resurrection welcome back Padric go off prince
Okay, so I've listened to both Cassadaga and Wide Awake Its Morning, can someone tell me the next album check out?
7 years late, but listen to Lifted haha
@@StanleyCornfield damn, I came here to say the same thing, 9 years later
Did anyone else hear Jack Black screaming at the end?
Never loved u more than when u flower EVEYWHERE PARTNER edit wut? under the... oven?? get ur cainyballroom dancin shoes NOW
Um... I am NOT okay lmfao
I think it's obvious that he's drunk. How many things are out of our control that can ruin our lives
