This is just a really weird release. It's a retro card, but he's colored like the character from the animated series. I don't think he's ever been depicted in this powder blue and lavender combo outside of that cartoon. And the new parts of the sculpt are clearly going for the cartoon aesthetic as evidenced by the soft musculature in the torso, but he's got the big, veiny, arms of the old figure which looks weird. And then the heads are not particularly cartoon-inspired, but that gun is ripped right from an episode of the show. And then of course there's the fact that Hasbro has a dedicated X-Men animated line, but this figure isn't a part of it, so I don't know what's going on. Maybe that line just didn't have the budget for this figure but the Legends team really wanted to do cartoon Apocalypse. Either way, you get a figure that's stuck in the middle and it's a sequence of half measures with obvious cost savings sprinkled throughout. I loved that cartoon, I hated that Apocalypse was practically pink as a kid, but as an adult it does charm me and scratches that nostalgia itch. From that standpoint, I like this, but there's still a whole bunch of things about I don't like or can nitpick and that's basically my Marvel Legends experience in a nutshell. They only ever give me some of what I want and the rest I'm forced to just settle for.
I really want this figure!!! Set him up with some Retro Sentinels and it becomes a full blown 90s X-Men episode!
Other than the inaccurate boots and head sculpt Hasbro could have given him but didn’t…. it’s half done… could have been a perfect 10.
I feel like "its fine" is an accurate description of the legends line as of late lol
For real, even the good ones are just a meh for me because they are being sold for $40-50 over here

@@zoomflight3115 yep, decided to not buy Marvel Legends anymore, wanted some of the new Spidey figures but ordered the Mafex one instead, if I have to pay that much for figures then may as well go for the ones that feel like they are worth more than 20 bucks
If youre lucky. I feel the line hit its peak with Dr Doom, and started going downhill slowly after that.
That’s what they care about. Profit margins. Have as few expenses as possible. They never really go all out on any single figure.
I like it quite a bit, even with the flaws. Funny thing, when I found him in store, he was priced £25.99 (UK based), so I took him. Guy at the checkout had problem scanning it, was showing £45.99, even thou the price tag said £25.99 but after a minute or two, he let me go with £25.99. Thanks for the great review 🙂👍

At this point, Hasbro should brand most of its ML figures as "ready to customize".

I can't take my eyes off of the matte blue painted chest. That shows how far good and varied paint can go. Somebody will customize it and take it from a 7 to an 8.5

I'm sooo happy they made this version! But wish it was more comic based.
Love the way you point out the disparity in card art and figure. Hasbro AND McFarlane both drive me nuts by putting source / reference art on the package and then deliberately departing from that art in the fig they ultimately produce, sometimes in reay major ways (esp McFarlane for that last comment).
I was debating which one to buy…this one you reviewed or the diamond select apocalypse. In the end I chose the DS version,hope you review it and give your thoughts about it and decide which one is best.
How are you liking it?

What gets me about this Apocalypse is that it is almost $10 more, depending on where you get it from, than the upcoming Marvel Select version. They have almost the same amount of accessories, possibly the same amount of functional articulation... But the Select one has waaaaaay more detail in sculpt and better paint apps, while this one is heavy on reuse and barely or detail. Basically, this particular ML proves without a shadow of a doubt, we are definitely paying more for less!
If they were going to go for the different textures, I think it would have made more sense to make the purple matte and the blue shiny. I know he's all techno organic metal whatever, but the blue parts seem more like armor a lot of times.
It really does end up looking cheap.

I love the ankles on him. I wish they did that more often on figure as it gives more poseability & dynmaic poses. Calf swivel on stuff is fine when it's a boot but there's no cut when they use those kind of ankle joints / ball swivel.
Since I saw Apocalypse in the last episode of "X-Men 97" in the Finale, I immediately bought this Apocalypse version before the prices sky rocket! It's exactly the cartoon type I like and matches the cartoon animation. So glad I snatched one before the scalpers mark it up to $200 dollars!

Great review AC. Missing out on the previous versions, I bought the ML AoA Apocalypse for my display knowing it wasn't the version for me. Hasbro produced a "its fine" effort on this one, yet like the AoA, it isn't the version for me. After spying the recent Marvel Select offering, I am passing on Hasbro's lackluster product for a more complete one. Even though I have only seen promo shots and photos of MS Apocalypse at Cons, the color scheme is more aligned to my liking then this one.
I have seen the A paint mishap on several of these and am wondering whether there was a defect in the paint.

I'm really considering getting this one as my only Apocalypse figure. I'm a collector but I don't really like to have multiples as much as possible (space is a problem and I haven't even displayed my figures yet) but I also don't like to resell my figures. However, since the announcement of the "War Machine" MvC design, I'm kinda expecting a paint swap of this Apocalypse with a blue and gray color scheme; the color scheme when he appeared in X-Men vs Street Fighter game. As much as the animated series was my definitive X-Men, the Apocalypse from the game is my definitive version of him.

Good review as always. It's always interesting to hear your thoughts on these things.
Personally I'd rank this guy a little higher, maybe an 8 for me. A few more hand options would have been nice, he was fond of using that piledriver in the cartoon, but all in all I think he came with pretty much everything the character needs.
I fully expect a two-tone blue comic version within a year though.

I like both modern and retro versions. The vain-ny biceps are likely from Caliban. @AnthonysCustoms will you get the Diamond/ Marvel Select Apocalypse?

The biceps are the same as the BAF Apocalypse, and surprisingly enough not shared with Caliban.
Back when the BAF came out it was assumed the veins were there because the mold would be used for some other character, but to this point only the three Apocalypses have used it. So yeah, it's really weird the veins were sculpted in the first place.
I’ve never been a big Apocalypse fan, but if I were to pick one up, I would go with the more iconic color scheme. I love the blue and purple color scheme in and of itself, but I don’t think it suits Apocalypse at all.
Zup Anthony, really like this figure, I’ll probably do some shading on the purple, then some flat top coat and 🎉 tada! Although I prefer the blue version this one its pretty cool, thanks for the video 😎

I get mine sometime in January tbh I only got it for heads and I kissed out on og baf I’d love to in future paint this one up better I’m a fan of purple but I hate the colors on body.

I loved this Apocalypse, yeah, it's mostly sculpted plastic, so what? Batman Azrael was the same and I love that figure too, the over bite might be a reference to how he looked in Street Fighter vs X-Men althought the colors are closer to the animated series. The Marvel select will probably be the superior release, but I love this specific design for Apocalypse, besides, just like the McFarlane's Az-Bat, I'll re-paint it this one.

To be fair, regarding the ab and pec details, those didn't show on Apocalypse's character model in the actual animated series. I THINK those were just additions that the artist who did the packaging made, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I can't help but feel like the purple is a bit too saturated & bright. Was hoping it would be more subdued & darker to give Apocalypse a more serious or threatening feel. It is mostly accurate to the cartoon, but a lot of those shots of apocalypse were at night so his colors were appropriately muted.
Frankly neither this version or the Marvel Select version (not a fan of that head sculpt) that's coming out are my perfect version of Apocalypse, but they're both damn close lol. Looking forward to seeing how the ML heads fit onto the select and adding some paint to the ML body.
I agree. No one has mentioned it from what I've seen but the head on the MS one is terrible.

This figure could have been the perfect cartoon Apocalypse…. but just like always Hasbro half assed this figure and opted out of doing a completely new sculpt boots including…. I’ll wait for the BA Marvel Select Apocalypse coming out it will crush this cheap ass looking plastic toy in every way.

More than the marvel select and the marvel select looks so much better, might even have better articulation. Marvel legends liscense needs to go to another company or it'll keep slowly fizzling out until it has the least sad or honorable end ever
