What is Mild Scoliosis?

Mild scoliosis can be challenging because of the perception that smaller curves should respond well to treatment. However, the misinformation that is available all around about it makes it difficult to treat.
When patients are diagnosed with mild scoliosis, they are advised to do nothing, but these small curves eventually become big curves. Nobody knows precisely how fast a curve will progress or how big it will become, but the risk of not receiving treatment guarantees the curve will worsen. Managing your curve is the only way to prevent it from becoming something you don't want it to be later on.
When dealing with adult cases of scoliosis, one thing all patients have in common is that they wish they had known about their scoliosis earlier in life and that they had done something about it.
The one good thing about mild scoliosis is that it responds well to treatment, especially when the patient is compliant. Patients can do therapy, rehabilitation, exercises, even bracing with fantastic results.
The main problem with mild scoliosis is when patients see their doctors and are told to do nothing, knowing these curves will progress over time.
Especially in adolescents, because the patient doesn't feel pain, they tend not to treat it. It is expected for adolescents not to feel pain with scoliosis, but in adults, pain is common.
Mild scoliosis doesn't mean it is not significant. It only means the range where the scoliosis is in, but all scoliosis is significant regardless of the range.
If left untreated, adult scoliosis will progress slowly due to gravity throughout the years, but it could have progressed from mild to moderate or even severe the next time you have it checked.
When it comes to reducing a curve, we can only reduce a percentage of the total of the curve. The bigger the curve, the smaller the percentage of reduction you can get. Per every 3 degrees a curve progresses, chiropractic care can only reduce 1. So, if your curve is 10 degrees today and you wait ten years, it might increase to 20 or 30 degrees, and then you can only get a 30% or 40% reduction of your curve. Instead, if you take action sooner, you can get a bigger reduction of 50% to 60% and prevent progression.
When it comes to mild scoliosis, the most important advice is: don't let your curve become more severe and treat it proactively.

Mild Scoliosis is considered to be one of the more challenging cases. There is often no pain associated with mild scoliosis and with smaller curves most doctors would not prescribe any course of action till the curve becomes so severe that surgery is recommended. Scoliosis experts know that any small curve has the potential to get bigger and being proactive is vital to stabilize and reduce the curve. Curves that range from 10 to 25 degrees are considered to be minor cases. The good news is that patients with mild scoliosis typically respond exceptionally well to conservative scoliosis treatment.

I stumbled upon your video because I saw a doctor after I was paralyzed with pain and couldn’t walk after vacuuming my living room. I’ve been living with this pain for years and it’s progressively gotten worse. My chiropractor didn’t tell me when I did my initial X-rays for him, just some other concerns. The doctor that I saw last week said it’s “only” mild scoliosis and I was left with no resources on what to do so I have to find my own way to navigate pain and how I can do these household tasks that I can’t do for more than a few minutes without having to fight the pain. I’m only 28 so this is a revelation to find out why my pains been happening for years.
Thank you for this. It’s very validating!

Thank you so much, doctor! I'm mild scoliosis with 18 degrees with C- Shape lumbar and I’m 29. I identified scoliosis when I was 23 which caused me so much shoulder pain up till now. The doctor told me that I had subscapularis tendinitis injuries. So they referred me to the physio and well the physio lady found out that I’m scoliosis. We went through an x-ray. And yes it's confirmed. They asked me why and so on. History family, and birth and all were NO. Only when I told them I was active with sports since I was 6, high jump, sprinter, futsal, rock climbing, kayaking and baseball. So the doctor assumed that this scoliosis happened because of sports injuries. Yes, I went to chiro and physio but nothing changes. I went to a massage once in a month and exercise workout, still going till now. All of that only helped to relieve for a few days but then I'm in pain again. My shoulders pain on the right side especially, numbness, burning, tingling, and my hands shaking all time, it's even worst when I overused my right hand like painting, cooking, carrying loads, driving, etc. All my fingers numb when I wake up every morning from bed. I do have numbness and tingling on my left thigh from waist to knee. And I can’t sit or stand for too long it can cause shoulder pain and my left rib pain as well. It’s tiring when my body aches and I tend to get tired easily. I just don't know what to do. I’m tired of getting help because the doctor the physio and the chiro told me u only had mild scoliosis, nothing to worry about. It is just some pain it will relieve after a few days and It’s normal. And the most annoying part is when other people see you normal and you’re not sick. Because of this pain, they can’t see it except I’m the one who deals with it. Thanks for your time to go through my story doc. I hope any suggestions from your side. Well anyway, I’m from Malaysia. 💖 Thanks doctor, love sjaza

I have recently this year March 2022 diagnosed with mild scoliosis. My cure is in the thoracic right side. I also have disc degenerative disease in my whole back, osteoarthritis, and a bulging disk in my lower back. I had physical therapy to loosen my back muscles. That's it. I was told my cure was at 10 degrees. I have had bad back, neck, and shoulder pain, and Plantar fasciatis bad in my right foot and staring to get bad in my left foot now years. I have a hop or a limp when I walk too. I have taken meds for inflammation and pain also muscle relaxers. The physical therapy has helped pretty good. The only the thing is the physical therapy and meds was all I was told to done and then to be rechecked later on down the road. The orthopedic doctor said if I still had pain I could get pain injections or maybe dry needling. I ask if there is more that I could do or get done and he said we'll you are 53 years old. Like because I'm getting older what do you expect. That's the way he made me feel. I believe there is more that can be done to keep things at bay and reduce my back issues so they don't get worse. He hasn't tell me anything else to help me any further. What advice can you give me to do or who to see for help please?

Thanks for the video, damn. I got mild scoliosis, and getting that figured out was a pain in the ass.
Started having back pain that would come out of nowhere sometime before or shortly after I began working at my first job, a labor job, and it never went away. It would come and go, where I could feel no pain for months and then suddenly it's debilitating even though my routines and habits don't change.
After seeing a tiny note about it in my military medical records after discharge due to an injury, I consulted a doctor and was told I didn't have it by briefly glancing at my back. Got to the point where I straight up couldn't work at all, not to mention my ribcage being uneven. Finally I went to see a doctor just this year at age 22 because of new symptoms that indicated possible nerve issues and changes in the area of pain and was given an Xray. FINALLY I got to see with my own eyes that I actually do in fact have a C curve albiet mild. Way too many things added up.
Unfortunately I was not given a curvature percentage or told to follow up on anything besides strengthen my back to ensure less pain, but now that I'm educating myself I'm a lot more aware of what will probably happen in the future, especially if I leave it be. I'm currently in my "no pain" phase but it'll come back. It always does.
I have no idea if being on a hormone medication that is known to effect bone strength and having had chest-binded, usually for too long, for around 1-2 years impacts a spine that's curved. My ribcage is tender and fragile now from the constant compression. I know physical therapy would help but that requires that I am consistent in a way that's unrealistic for me (I have mental health conditions that make it very hard to be motivated)
I have a posture-corrector but I don't know how much that would help. Honesty I'm at a loss here and I'll see a specialist eventually, I just hope it's someone who will give me actual advice rather than the cliche crap I'm used to.
I'm glad I can see videos like this, though. It makes me feel less alone to hear that even in mild cases the pain can be just as bad.

Hi! I have mild scoliosis (don't know what degree :( ) I got my scoliosis diagnosed at 18, now i'm 19 and in some months I'll go get checked again, still in my little country they don't have things like postural gymnastics but I'm doing research to some exercise I can do at home. As a active teenager I really like sports and going to the gym, as I am doing now, always trying to have attention of my back, hoping to able to do more advanced sports like others.

Even sleeping is kind of hard and I use a heating pad to relieve it at least...but I can still feel it ache slightly and it freaks me out I won't lie
I have a history of mental illness and the fact that I won't be able to move is freaking me out badly. What do I do?? Hello, how can I, myself, know if my mild scoliosis is getting worse????
My parents refuse to consult the doctor, telling me to not mind them as it is just mild. Therefore I am anxious as to how can I detect it myself if it is getting worse?
Pls. Help me... Btw. I am only 16

I’m in pain a lot. 15 degree. I had a car accident and it was set off. 30 years ago. Winters are terrible. I developed Osteoarthritis. Mine hasn’t really progressed but the pain gets really bad. I’m exercising and strength training at 50. Seeing if this works.

Hey, Doctor, I'm Muhammad from Malaysia, and had been diagnosed with mid-scoliosis 25 degrees since last 2 years ago (2021) after I X-ray and found out about it but Doctor said I no need to worry about anything because I was just in mid-category and nothing worst. Also, I had been asking him what do you recommend to help my scoliosis situation get better and he said nothing to do or worry about at all.

I was 9 when diagnosed and they told me to do nothing. This concerned me bc in my head it made no sense why a small bend wasn’t a big deal either. At 16 I stopped growing and my back started to hurt more and tried to get my doctor to check it again but they kept saying I should be fine that I should prolly still do nothing. I’m now 19 I feel it got worse bc my lumber areas curve is much more prominent and my upper area feels so much more compressed then I when it was when I was 16 and asked for a check on that for possible treatment. I’m currently looking for ways to get xrayed again and hopefully show a scoliosis specialist to see if at least a chiropractor or treatment is available.
