- A compilation of some of our most loved Japanese homes that we’ve shared on Never Too Small, featuring small home designs for families, tiny plots deep in the heart of Tokyo smaller than a car parking space, oddly shaped homes spread across multiple levels. All examples of beautiful and detailed design, even if at times outwardly chaotic.

I really love how Japanese integrate nature in their urban living.
I had watched all of them and It was a pleasure watch it again.
Interesting to see that everyone non-Japanese is trying to copy Japanese style and keep very minimalistic and uncluttered places, but the real Japanese places you feature are somewhat cluttered
That's an interesting and true observation. I know that Japandi is in at the moment in the west and that shares the core philosophies that both styles have. I guess maybe it's more to do with space being a premium in the city in Japan, and maybe the wabi sabi approach? When it comes down to storage they are very innovative, both the traditional Kyoto homes and the uber modern Tokyo appartments are a great example. A house that is a little busy (not too much) and well lived, is one that is warm, inviting and homely 😊
agree.
Some one show your cases and call them japanese style with lack lots of feature for real live.
That is my experience also. The mindset is more driven towards a balance and not towards an ideal.
It's okay if a home looks like a home to someone and not like an empty hotel room. Especially with families, there's often not a lot of furniture considering how many items we surround ourselves with in modern society.
That’s the difference between showcasing photo/videography and real life. Often times magazine and videos presents the perfect zen environment - but in reality especially with young kids it’s never the case. Even Marie Kondo has admitted defeat.
Cluttered, it is!
As a Japanese and has been watching NTS for a long time, I have been waiting to see when NTS would come to Japan, and I am glad to see that they are taking it up so often these days.
In the first video I cannot believe how much is in a small space and also I loved the outside garden and the kitty free to roam and inspect the plants....
It’s good to see someone isn’t minimalist this channel. It’s more realistic.
I love Japanese houses. It's somehow inspiring to watch how they come up with the ideas and then make them real. I also love the little spaces around where they live, especially the Tsubo house's space where the homeowner puts out a chair and sits.
What a great hour that was🧡
My favourite is the mother and son house. So very lovely!
I live in a 1500 sqf bungalow in the Canadian Niagara region. I love this video because it shows the ingenuity to make use of small spaces! Most of them are 2/3 smaller than my house now. I used to live in a house we built with 5000 sqf and I was glad when I left there. It’s crazy we don’t need that much space. I’m trying to adapt to Japanese style living with minimal possessions but it’s extremely difficult with a husband who likes to hoard, not excessively but enough to drive me crazy!🤪 I love Japan and the people❤️❤️This video gave me the inspiration to declutter more of my house!
I loved the designs of most of the tiny homes featured here! I always loved the Japanese minimalism lifestyle.
Love the metal house with the big sliding wooden doors! seems like a happy house..
LoveHouse2 makes my heart go pitter patter 👌
wow wow wow. world premier homes and the amazing people that care for them
Excellent collection of videos. I hope you do more of these for homes around the world. In particular France and Australia.
I’d love an update of the Japanese ‘Flagpole house’ as the owner himself stated that it would evolve by living in it. ❤
It is a useful use of concrete. There is a warmth about it. I enjoyed the visit.
I'd love to see a compilation video of the smallest homes you've filmed so far!
You guys are so smart for this video. Thank you for this relaxing video that I will definitely rewatch haha
Ived worked in japan in tech even with high education, not everyone can speak english as well as this father and son, the father is really good speaker and the son is excellent ❤
Absolutely love this compilation!
Невеликий але продуманий та доволі затишний будинок.
Дякую за екскурсію ❤️
For us in the tropics, it's always about overcoming the heat, especially with smaller spaces..
Nice.. I love the big sliding window
Awesome compilation! Thanks for putting all of this together! 🙌
Nice to see these again
I like the industrial-ness in their designs.
It's nice for a weekend. They're miserable. Trust me. Enjoy not ever having counter space or any horizontal surface at all bigger than a dish.
Fantastic video. Thank you so much.
I remember the second Ouchi designed apartment bright and beautiful and still lovely to look at after viewing it a while back....
Love Japanese Architecture
I always enjoy watching your channel. I really enjoyed this video too. thank you so much🥰
Well-planned space!
Now this is good
I loved the Open sky house!
WOWWW!!! ❤
The architecture of this building is my personal favorite of any anywhere. I have been fascinated by it for a long time.
Very distinctive inside and out. 💯
There's great ideas and some that would drive me nuts
Lovely house.
There walk and posture is very composed
I'd be surprised if NTS videos haven't won any award..
Wonderful mix of small Japanese homes, always very inspiring to watch these modern builds and adore the Japanese style over all, both new and old (especially the older traditional Kyoto style). I can't help but notice very intetestingly that what we call the gorgeous 'Japandi' style here in the west, seems to be the modern standard style in Japan, is this correct to say? It seems to have commonalities now that concrete/stone, alternative lighter shades of wood and glass has become more popular for building over there, the lines seems to be blurred? Thank you for the upload and hope to see some more in the future 😊
Excellent solution with the Englisch subtiles! 😊
These are great for people who are less than 185cm and who don't require surfaces to do anything on. The largest objects you can get into homes like this are things you can hand carry on the subway or in a small car. It makes me wonder how much better equipped people are for tinkering/making/inventing/building if they have access to just slightly larger spaces. You can't be a rugged individualist or very self sufficient or even a very good artist without work spaces; and I think in that vein people who live in these houses exhude a dependence on the stores, shops, consumer goods around them for convenient lifestyle. You can't have anything more than an herb garden in a place like this. It's a consumer lifestyle in order to obtain the conveniences that permit acceptable living in such a small space.
And that's why people who lives in small houses are annoying. They have chosen to forgive basic resources (space) that are almost axiomatic to being a cool person who does THINGS in space. I'd bet money most of these small space dwellers are almost exclusively using their media devices in these small spaces as the sole form of diversion (again because there isn't enough space to do anything else). Most of the designers in this video are obsessed with finding place to keep all your small items; their speech is dominated by words and phrases like "not seem so small." A highlight is the bathroom where you can barely get in because the door opens into the toilet - the owner seems to revel in the fact that you have to finesse your way into the shitter so much so that even getting into the bathroom has become an end in itself. Ah, architects really do rule our lives.
Minimalism is the only Key which can save EARTH
and eating bugs.
they are so smol :D kawaii!!!
02:16 I appreciate the nod to Australia on the floor there
I love that they don’t make large or private bedrooms a priority. Togetherness and nature are at the forefront.
The only thing I even liked about the second home is the kid's album showing is one of my favorites?! Jim Croce 💙💙💙 Otherwise, having a "bedroom" that's basically the couch is less than ideal for a kid growing up...they do need some bedroom privacy once they hit their tweens.
I always wonder how these small spaces with unfinished details manage to stay clean. They're beautiful and clever, but I imagine spaces like Tokyo Blue must get so dusty!
Some great designs here but does the love house seem very dangerous to anyone else? That narrow staircase and the 2 sliding doors that open on the top floor and the tall void for the tree 😮
They're lounging on the concrete & I'm like, where's the sofa! Honestly, though, it wouldn't matter because I would have done myself in within 5 minutes of arriving due to the stairs & lack of railings. I agree, it's very dangerous.
@@HuhHowboutThat 😂😅😳
Thank you!!!!! It takes more energy to talk about how great your small house is than build it. Let's create a basic coefficient, you add up the # hours you've spoken about how cool your tiny house is, divide it by the # labor hours for the construction. If the answer if > 1 then you have to wear a kick me sign on your back.
The first house must be more than 19 sq meters. That is only 204 sq ft. They have fitted so much in!! I love the fish grill. The bed is Queen size. It is amazing
The first video, I love listening to the gentleman's Japanese language. ❤
I actually have a playlist of all my favourite videos per the Country for NTS channel only. I can finally declutter that folder and keep this single post. NTS can you do the same for the other Countries please? 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Beautiful simplicity. Is the word "kitchen" in Japanese borrowed from English?
There are many borrowed words from English which they usually write in Katakana (angular style writing). Hiragana is for traditional Japanese words and for kids learning how to write. Kanji are the characters which is like the Chinese writings. I reckon the "Japanized" English words would be written the same in Kanji since it's more symbolic.
The Japanese have such limited space for housing this just demonstrates the flexibility and maximising what can be a very tight squeeze .. my fave was the second home..so simple and light..nothing needed altering…😊
When I got the keys to the apartment without refurbishment, I was confused by how small it seemed. After refurbishing, the concrete walls became beige, white, and in some places, dark blue. The perceived space of the apartment almost doubled. Do not leave it in concrete. It makes your life feel cramped.
....and sad. Concrete gray is sad in the long run.
How many times have the residents of 6 Tsubo been walked in on by other people while in the middle of taking a dump? Love the front door and whole exterior though.
Well planned space but the clutter could been planned hidden as well.
I like wide sliding doors having frames, despite it bigger than the size of the wall.
Now every American will want a tiny home in Japan
I am not into tiny but minimalism somehow bring peace. 🤷🏿♀️
I'd be worried about the washing machine in the first clip, it needs space to spin and rumble, and for airflow to avoid overheating. I'd always give things with electronics their own space.
Cada vez que veo un nuevo video amo y me sorprenderme tanta creatividad en la arquitectura, gracias por sus increíbles videos ❤.
The order of the clips doesn't match the chapter names... 6 Tsubo and Love2House were switched, it seems.
Our mistake! We'll get that fixed!
So all this humbling frugality… only to destroy and build a new one in 20 years?!
5:45 they ruined their poor neighbours view though (The yellow House, sec floor)
However, there are cases where the tense area itself is not small. haha
czcams.com/video/z1t2c5rNldg/video.html My favorite. I love the organize mess..
the first home is - well - i'm not sure what to say about it. it looks like a *make do* space
omg, I can't watch anymore. That poor mother.
I understand this is supposed to display the design of a home but I just cannot ignore the obvious... the son who has overtaken the Mothers house and shoved her in a tiny closet style bedroom behind the laundry. Yuk.
Don't be so dramatic! you can't judge from a video!
@@chloeuntrau4588 I agree it is pre-emptive to judge from a video however there is more than enough information in the video to know some facts. The facts in which I found to be not very nice.
At least she has privacy. He doesn’t. Did you think of that?
@@deekang6244 privacy in a closet yay
I would feel like the most BLESSED of Mothers 🙏🏽 👵🏽 If I had a Son who would Not FIRST Consider throwing me into some SMELLY God Forsaken **Old Folks Home** but instead would be Loving and Kind enough to make it Possible for me to have my OWN room with a Comfortable Bed, space for personal things AND a separate private entrance to the bathroom!!! This would be a Dream Come True for many Elderly Parents who are Not so Fortunate to have such a Son but are just THROWN AWAY and forgotten to live their remaining years in Loneliness and despair 😢
Terrible living conditions 😮💨
agree!
Very monochrome and to me, very bland. Colors are mostly absent, utilizing gray, white, and metal. The dwellings are very narrow and high-ceilinged, with a definite lack of windows. I bet there's an echo! Because of all this, combined with the absent color, I found almost each home to be depressing. I can't imagine being a child in this atmosphere. Good use of color stimulates the mind. I do find the clever use of space to be an excellent way to tuck away everything a person needs but doesn't want under foot. However, space-saving storage can't make the house into a home.
