- America’s F-22 Raptor is still widely considered the most capable and dominant air superiority fighter in the world, but as China’s J-20 production continues to ramp up, the F-22’s dominance now faces a significant threat: A capacity gap.

All Russian and Chinese stealth fighters come with a built-in early warning system specifically for America's stealth fighters. To warn of engagement with F-22 or F-35, they make a loud, alarming "BANG!" when they blow up.

China's military has always been a paper tiger, just like the Russians. Recent conflicts the Chinese have been in have shown they aren't up to the task in terms of soldier skill.

It’s even more reasonable when you realize that modern fighter aircraft are closer to atmospherically limited spaceships than warbirds. I mean it, try explaining the combat doctrine of the f-35 and your own words will feel more ridiculous the more you talk.

But the F-14 would be extremely expensive for a modern economy... Though a $300 million 6th gen fighter would be a whole lot more capable.
An F-35 now is actually a bargain and I don't know why the US govt. doesn't order a few hundred on top of what they've already ordered. That would at least fix their error with the F-22 if you want to call it that. The F-22 is just TOO problematic, with too much cost and you HAVE to fly it slower or now it lights up on an enemies radar so as good as it is in maneuvering, the plane takes a hit to its advantage when it does.
It's a shame really and it WAS better to cut production because of the list of problems it has.
The F-35 is becoming a better fighter as it gets upgraded and will be a good holdover until we're at 6th gen. People want to debate this but at economics of scales, you do the same thing China is, overwhelm the enemy with numbers, and it should be capable of being modified to operate a squad of drones with it, and drones in very large numbers is really the future. Once again I know people want to debate that but all logic points to drones being the future, led by a few pilots in whatever aircraft they're in.
No Stealth Fighter can yet manage to compete with the SU57's ability to transform into a Swiss Bank Account or a Super-yacht at the flick of a computer key.

TBO on SU 57 is abysmal and not operational capable. It is not in production nor every will be. Bank account conversion is superlative.
Which is not true when there's only a few of them anyhow and the Russians can't have them all flying at the same time because they can't afford it the su-57 is a joke not only that it's not even a true stuff playing they still haven't figured out how to cover up the engines.
Anyting the China has reverse-engineered from the United States of America stolen technology and you might as well shop at Goodwill or salvation army if your China or Russia because that's exactly what they're doing they're getting the leftovers of what we don't want
I believe the USAF's real "secret sauce" is mission planning i.e. being able to conduct multiple simultaneous sorties into contested airspace. Would you consider doing an episode of various countries capabilities in this field?
@@AnglersUAE Unlimited funding is worthless unless you know how to spend it. Tremendous effort/analysis has gone into the development of US Airpower (Not just USAF but Navy , and Marine Aviation) Doctrine. All too often people believe that spending more for weapons is all that is required. However, recognizing the value in spending time, effort, and yes money in areas like training, logistics, and the refinement of mission planning is hugely important. This has indeed been an area where the USA has held a historical advantage.... primarily from screwing it up in the past and learning from their mistakes.

100% correct. Not just the multiple/simultaneous/contested aspect, but the depth of institutional, generational knowledge that wrote the manual on *how* to do that stuff, in a joint fashion, across several branches, agencies and intel sources. Horrible as it may be, USAF mission planners have actually practiced this shit on a grand scale about every ten years since the end of WWII. They then spend the next decade analyzing what happened and how to do it better. Nobody else has that experience, especially not China, but I'd love to see an Airpower bit on that subject!

The DoD’s financial focus on the GWOT for twenty years was the largest gift to China one can imagine. That, and the absolute waste of funds on the Zumwalt, the LCS, the Future Combat System, ending F-22 production - absolutely criminal.

In terms of equipment I agree, but the value of the human capital accumulated in the form of servicemen with combat experience is hard to overstate. Nobody in the Chinese military has seen combat except for some stone throwing at the Indian border.

@@IanHimself28hindsight, I was up in arms over the F-22 shutdown when it happened and I'm not a defense analyst but knew the consequences as it was known adversaries were working(and stealing) on stealth technology. Sometimes we're lead by a bunch of useful idiots that know when their govt career is over they have a nicer private sector job waiting for them so will do what some fool politicians say...
Trying to sell the F-22's at that PRICE was criminal. Lockheed gambled that the F-22 was too big to fail Doomed it after the 15th unit was built. Costs killed it=P
If Lockheed had brought the price down to about $130 flat without Fly-Away costs added, we'd have seen about 850 Raptors. I KNOW the newest fighter will be loosely based on the F-23. F-22 won because Lockheed promised to not pull a B2 Bomber trick (Competition's Costs over runs). They then proceeded to do just that almost like a bait and switch..
Assume they have better than what they report and we will end up with the pinnacle of military technology. Look at the f-15. We prepared to combat a fighter that we thought was inconceivable at the time, and it turned out to be hot air and we made the most successful air-to-air platform in history.
Yeah the last 20 years or so of the USSRs history they'd bluff, we'd plan to beat the bluff, then we'd end up with something far beyond the Soviets capabilities. The Mig-25 was thought to be some super jet that could outrun the US while also being able to dogfight and carry a heavy payload; only we found out it was super heavy thanks to shitty materials and couldnt turn nearly as fast as we thought and would probably rip its own wings off if it tried what we thought it could do. We saw the same after the collapse of the USSR when picking through post soviet states stocks, realizing we'd planned for a worst case scenario only to discover typical communist incompetence and corruption.

Why do people still say the F-35 isn't intended for air superiority even after all these years... This is and has been frustrating for such a long time now. The F-35 was designed from the ground up to be a true MULTIROLE fighter. Multirole to the core means both air dominance, ground attack, ISR, EW, SEAD, ELINT, AEW and force multiplication in the F-35's truest sense. There is currently only one fighter in the world that can hold a candle against the F-35 and that is the F-22.

The F35 doesn't get respect for its air dominance capabilities because it's overshadowed by the F22, and people (for some reason, maybe Russian propaganda) think the F35 is overpriced garbage. The F35 is a lot like the F18, where it isn't the absolute best at anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't DAMN good at everything. F35 is the best plane flying when you factor in capabilities, production scale, and PRICE.
That is like saying the F-35 is just as good at bombing as the B-52 because its multi role. Its not an air superiority because it lacks power and agility for sustained dog fights. If for what ever reason the F-35 looses its ability to fire its missiles or it has run out of them then its suddenly at a disadvantage for visual range dog fighting. Depending on what its going up against. At close range any stealth aircraft is easier to detect than far out. The F-35 also has a larger RCS than the F-22. But yeah as long as those two things don't happen then it's really really good.

As an expat who has lived in China for 20 years, I can tell you that it is very common when flying domestically to have your flight postponed, cancelled or rerouted mid flight because the military can suddenly declare large swathes of airspace are off limits. This is especially true during the summer months. They are trying really hard to get the practice in to catch up with the U.S. There have even been US and British former pilots who have been paid to come to China to teach flight maneuvers. How combat ready the Chinese are is a very big question and shear volume of practice does not necessarily equate to quality training.

(So not very accurate. Everything is up for debate)
Su-57: 1-0.1m2≈ 110-60NM
J-20: 0.1-0.01m2≈ 60-30NM
J-31: 0.01m2≈ 30NM
F-35: 0.005-0.001m2≈ 25-20NM
F-22: 0.0001m2≈ 10NM
Thata frontal aspect only. The F-22 and F-35 are the only aircraft stealthy from all aspects

We definitely dont know the true numbers but I'd wager there is a major capability gap like that. India has reported fairly easily spotting Chinese stealth jets and Russia's engineering skills have proven to be _extremely_ lacking, especially when compared to their claimed specs.

Another very good and well thought out video. One thing I would like to add is that the classification of M/C (Mission Capable) aircraft changes due to circumstances. In peacetime, a any number of things could ground an airframe, while under combat conditions those standards are thrown out the window. The readiness numbers would actually rise during hostilities. FYI, I used to fix combat aircraft for a living.

The glaring issue for China is its inability to project power. As we used to say as kids “no duh”, the US and its Allie’s will not have a numerical advantage vs Mainland-based Chinese fighters. Sorry Taiwan. But outside this limited radius F-35 Bs and Cs reign supreme. Ditto Chinese surface naval power; zero ability to sortie deep into the Pacific or Indian oceans, and stay there. China also has zero expeditionary land capabilities. Ultimately China cannot even survive even if it flexes in its own back yard, the South China Sea, as that is economic suicide. Instead of worrying about China’s air power or fledgling carrier capability the West should focus more on its far more worrisome (IMHO for the above reasons) submarine capabilities.

I agree with putting money into the next technology rather than to build more F22s.
I would agree, if development times didn't amount to decades, with no guarantee of success. A stop-gap solution may be needed until gen6 is operational. The way things are going, one can realistically expect things to get hot with China sooner than later. The Ukraine war has proven that an inferior weapon on hand is better than a top of the line performer in development. As a non-expert, an "F-22EX" type solution may be a good idea.

Man, I bet the highest levels of US intelligence and military brass wished they could've had a real visionary like you. Now we're screwed as a nation. If only we had some secret aircraft being worked on right now... If only we had a history of constantly overreacting to any weapons other countries come out with by designing our own weapons that turn out to be decades of what they had in the first place. If only...
Also remember that for a lot of F35’s they will probably have an F15EX or two kicking around as a situationally aware mule with a HUGE long range arsenal that will take targeting data from the 35. Not really sure a J20 could take on an F35 EX in a fight alone.

J20s are long range fighters designed to carry alot of fuel and engage in BVR combat, its not a dogfighter.
F35 isn't designed to dogfight either, but it's good to know it's more nimble if it needs to be (like with trying to dodge missiles) to make up for its relatively shorter legs.
My gosh, your passion and heart shine through so brightly. As a retired Airborne Combat Engineer, your final statements gave me chills. Peace through strength. While it is true, we must find a balance between defense spending and power projection. It is just as important for guys like you to shine the light upon corruption in said defense industry. We need these companies and many more to legitimately compete to genuinely widen the technological gap We have on the rest of the world. It's also important for us to be financially, politically, and socially stable to prove we are not internally weak. I believe if we are to fall, it will not be from without, but within.
How do you rebuild a system where companies genuinely compete when so many defense contractors of the past are now subsidiaries of the remaining half dozen or so? Development costs a lot of money, it isn't like the 30's when a company might self finance a design.
In modern planes, it's pretty much Lockheed for fighters and Northrup for bombers. Boeing is being phased out.

@recoil53 I think that is the million dollar question, and if I had the answer, I wouldn't be here in the comment section. Instead, make a 7 figure salary, lol. I do still think decentralized advancement in technology is the most effective way to widen that gap. There may not be the ability for some guy to design and build the next airplane engine in his garage (although with advancements in 3d printing and desktop cnc, it's still possible). Our DOD could open up competition in so many of the subsystems we have on aircraft to competition. A computer genius in his garage or basement could possibly design a better missile guidance computer or flight computer. Even if he doesn't have the billions of dollars to design and build the whole aircraft. The biggest hurdle will be to properly reign in the military industrial complex, without destroying them, while also creating legitimate competition to improve the whole process.
J-20 is actually no longer China’s most advanced fighter jet.
The new J-28 is capable of freely cruising around the solar system at Mach 40, full spectrum stealth including optical stealth, direct energy weapon that can easily shoot down ICBMs, per Chinese ‘news’ 😂

From the talking heads of cable news outlets, elected officials on C-span, to keyboard forum warriors, its just all noise to me; kids arguing over playground turf, but with varying production value.
It seems like you guys at Sandboxx put a lot of due diligence to your reporting and I love that you guys self-critique and point out your own limitations. We actually do not know if the J20 can actually perform against US jets. I think that the J20 "advantage" is untested and uncertain.
Alex, you’ve hit the nail on the head at the end there. I don’t think any rational person loves war. Deterrence can avoid war. I joined up(Royal Australian Navy) during the Cold War in the 80s hoping I’d never have to fight the Soviets but was always willing to. We need to spend big to maintain that deterrent. I’m proud that Australia now has the 3rd biggest fleet of stealth fighters(F-35A) in the world. And all the other programmes in the works currently, like nuclear powered attack submarines, Boeing MQ-28a, Type 26 frigate, etc.

war on terror really took us down a peg in the volume sector but I'm glad somebody had the foresight to get NGAD and F/A-XX going. i just hope the drones in the constellation formations won't be too much of a cognitive load for the pilot, or there's a WSO or some kind of backseater.
the WOT really diverted billions away from procurement, in an era when the US military had been planning an overhaul. As a result, soldiers went into combat with older gear with gaps in the inventory for certain needed platforms. A great example in the MRAP program. $50 B to develope and backstop thousands of vehicles that are uniquely procurred for the missions in the Middle east. The vehicles have no place in the US military battler order, and never did, they're vehicles designed for occupational forces, which the US military doesn't ever want to be again. It's why the US military abandoned them in the middle east and gladly give them to local Law enforcement and search and rescue groups (they're actually decent for flash flood rescue), and give them freely to allies etc.

Seems like the skies are turning into target rich environments for the F-22. What I still find funny is that neither Russia or China will sucker punch the US so that they can let the Raptor loose in the skies and do its thing once and for all.
Most war games have China’s invasion of Taiwan beginning with a first strike on our carrier battle groups, sometimes even with tactical nukes. I think China’s window for invasion is sometime between 2026 and the early 2030’s. Otherwise it will be waiting a while and trying to out tech the US in a long game. Let’s hope the Raptor never has to go bird of prey on them…

I rarely comment on CZcams, but I feel the need to mention a disparity of views. Yes, you are a superb air assets analyst and I watch all your episodes. That said, in this particular case I have to differ from your overall assessment.
I am an analyst with over 40 years of experience as well as a long in the past aviator. From my point of view, you fail to take into account China's present socioeconomical problems. As an analyst I always look at who benefits from bad news first, and it's not China.
To put it in simple terms, they can't survive without our dollars. And it's already happening. US companies are leaving China in droves. Not only that, but their textile manufacturing base has also left, going to other countries like Vietnam and others. The Chinese teenager's mantra is that they will never work in a factory. They are too well educated and connected to the world. In short, China is bleeding cash, lots of it.
Don't get me wrong, this makes them even more dangerous, just like the Japanese were in the 1930's. It's a no-win situation for them though. For the foreseeable future, We, the US are a lot more capable militarily. That's because of what China doesn't know, and we don't either. This is by design....

While textile manufacturing is leaving China, car manufacturing and ship building is moving into China. Today China made 1/3 of automobiles 60% of EVs and 1/2 of ships in the world, and China just surpass Japan and became the biggest car exporter this year.
It's a really complicated issue. Don't be so sure of China is going to surpass US or China is going to fall.

And obviously Chinese youth want more for themself then a factory, I would say that is the mantra in the entire world, why work in a factory if you can work and get better pay in a office?

As you alluded to, this should be more than just a comparison to raw numbers. One would have to know the relative quality of the aircraft and training and motivation of the pilots to make a realistic determination of relative capacity.

The US Army just chose General Dynamics and Rheinmetall as finalists for the 4000 Bradley replacement IFVs.
Could you do a video about this program, the two finalists and the other three that dropped out. Or more generally the current state of IFVs (Bradley, CV90, Puma, Lynx) and their most likely future. Maybe even including anti air IFVs like some CV90 variants and SkyRanger.
Yeah, that program will probably get get cut when they can't finalize the design. Or they'll push it off until a bleeding edge technology becomes more reliable. They've tried like 4 times. The Abrams will get replaced before the Bradley.

I would seriously doubt China has more than 75 operational combat ready stealth fighters. They might have 150 airframes but I am not convinced these aircrafts are absolutely capable of taking out F15EX models in an absolutely dominating manner as an F22. Not to mention that our 4th generation fighters are better than theirs which just like us, comprises the vast majority of their airpower. China has ZERO chance in an air or Naval exchange. Their advantage would come in numerical superiority on the ground and that won't mean much if they do not control the sky, the ultimate high ground.
Don't be so sure. The US literally doesn;t have enough ammunition to take the fight to china's lands. Any war with china will be the US aimlessly bombing stuff in china and failing to take an inch of chinese territory until the US simply runs out of ammo.
Even in ukraine Russia has found it impossible to bomb your way to victory. you need boots on the ground to win any war.

Japan has been dealing with them for a while now and pick them up on radar and intercept them, really dont see that happening with the Raptor. My only worry is that China's window for Taiwan is closing fast and that battle could/will happen before the next gen fighter will be in service. Glad you didn't waste time on the Russian boogie man, as its dead for a long time to come !

J20s (like all stealth fighters) fly with radar reflectors in peacetime. Any headlines you see claiming things like that aren’t something to go off of.
Jet turbine engines are about 2 generations behind American engines. 3 generations behind if you count the engine design that was just completed for the F35, the engine core upgrade (ECU). 4 generations of you count the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP). Not only do these designs provide huge increases in thrust and fuel economy but the turbine supplies electricity for the jet's incredible radar and ECM. Block 4 on the F35 is mostly classified, open source information is scanty. Computer power is being increased by a factor of 25. Most allies won't buy the F35 until Block 4 is enabled. Lasers are definitely planned and that is the big push behind AETP. Any comparison between the F35 and other 5th gen ignores the fundamental enabling technologies.

I hated Trump but did prefer his strong words and more aggressive stance. Communists are bullies, just look at nearly every leader of the USSR, and their political structure is often described as a dog fight under a rug as they tend to tear eachother apart behind closed doors until a top dog emerges and that attitude breeds bullies. Looking at recent history we see Putin making probing attacks in Syria, setting up breakway states like Transnistria, and his first attack on Crimea not to mention many more smaller moves like flying into other countries air space to see how they'd react. Xi has been doing the same in the South China Sea and the more countries dont react the more he probes. Reagan understood that in the 80s and made firm stances and scaled up everything from the Navy down to America's airlift capacity making easier for the US to rule the seas and air while being able to make a move at a moments notice, and the Soviets couldn't counter any of those things. We also see this bully attitude even in internal politics, the moment Gorbachev looked weak Soviet satellite states started making moves like liberalizing and holding elections and in a matter of months they got bolder and bolder eventually breaking away which caused the whole Soviet empire to crumble largely due to the appearance of weakness.

The Chinese acquisition spending has been immense, now let’s see how much they’re willing to spend on sustainment.
because much of china's defense industry is state owned they're not going to just cut off sustainment over petty price disputes.
For China to outpace the U.S. in numbers of stealth fighters it would first have to actually HAVE a stealth fighter. The J-20 is nowhere nearly as stealthy as the F-22 or F35. Indian pilots flying SU-30 jets with Russian PESA radars have detected the J-20 from many kilometers away. It turns out that the J-20 is only somewhat stealthy from the front and not at all from the top, bottom, sides and rear. That means that even the F-15 with its AESA radar will be able to see the J-20. The F-22 and F-35 will have a turkey shoot in any encounter with the J-20; not to mention the NGAD coming into service in the next decade. The total numbers of F-15, F-18, F-22 and F-35 fighters in the U.S. inventory (all of which can spot the J-20) far outnumber China's inventory of J-20s and that does not count the ongoing production of the F-35. These "Chicken Little" videos do not tell the whole story.
Then why J-20 can approach US F-35 undetected??
Don't claim something is not stealthy because of belief..use FACTS

I think the J-20 is no match for the F-35, and they'll be on USN Carriers, USMC carriers, the Japanese will have them, as well as the South Koreans. Not too worried about the time before 2035 when the NGAD will be coming on line.
And to add to your carrier claim, the Chinese navy as far as I can tell has successfully done 1 blue water sortie. USS Gerald R. Ford did 170 in 8 hours. The training disparity is insane
I think as NGAD works up with loyal wingman drones, 6th gen will be like what 5th gen is compared to 4th gen today.
I expect that to be true, but the 6th generation won't be here for another 10 years if they don't fall behind schedule.

F35’s as a mini AWAC’s sending targeting information to F15EX and other 4+ platforms seems to be the stop gap in the short to medium term.
Honestly, with 20 decades of lessons before official procurement, I expect the 6th gen to be like what 5th gen is to 3rd gen. They've been wary of making a new plane just because the technologies were evolving so quickly thanks to better computer modeling, and 3d printing. Generational AI will only increase that faster. It's why they're only starting NGAD near the end of lifespan for the F22.
Look at the B2 vs the B21. The B21 is the first system in forever to come in under budget and ahead of schedule? why? because they took the lessons from the B2 to heart, and didn't make a replacement until the replacement technologies were properly refined enough to warrant a replacement. I think chief among them are ceramic based radar absorbing layers.

Our experience doing joint arms exercises, (something that Russia apparently never learned and China hasn't been in a fight since losing to Vietnam in 1979), is a huge advantage.

I wonder if it’s possible to build a fighter in the style of the F-22 with off the shelf components, such as using parts from the F-35, to help offset this capacity gap. Sort of like the proposed F-36 Kingsnake. Then again, even if we started now, by the time the fighter begins mass production and enters service, programs like the NGAD and/or FA-XX would also be in that same phase…but since the NGAD will only enter service with limited numbers, such an aircraft might not be such a bad idea…

I'd like to see a comparison between the J-20 and the F/A-18, which is IMHO a more likely pair-up than an other these days. The US has a lot more Hornets in advanced positions than they do F-35Cs, and stealth aside they are likely more dogfight capable.
Aircraft combat has more to do with BVR capabilities than dogfighting.

I am a Navy Vet and now a civilian carrying quite a bit of student debt (GI Bill did help).....but why not both??....forgive half the student loan debt while building at least 75% of the number of required airframes....then tax (or flat out bill) rich assholes to pay for it.
