That is Matt Dillon. Also, the "military band" is part of the NYPD choir referenced in the song.
NB: The New York Police Department doesn't actually have a choir. So in the music video, they enlisted the NYPD's Emerald Society Popes and Drums group. They didn't know 'Galway Bay' so they're actually singing the 'Mickey Mouse March', carefully edited in the film so you can't tell.

We call it a “tin whistle” in the midlands of Ireland. His passing has effected me more than I thought, bringing back memories of being stuck in pubs when I was a little lad gulping down Cidona while the adults were getting hammered on Harp and belting out MacGowan songs. He’s one of the few musicians that I have listened to consistently since childhood. No one else like him really.

Rest In Power, Shane. The Pogues were amazing. My s/o turned me on to Kirsty McColl, I was amazed at her voice and became a huge fan, too. The guy who killed her was never prosecuted. This is such a great song. It's so sad they're both gone now. It's been a shit year for losing people. I lost my coolest brother. I suddenly lost my little sister right before Halloween. Never thought I'd be the last one standing. This song, along with others held a lesson for me....Tell the people that you love that you love them. Before the concert they were in a record store, where I took my CD and stood in line to meet the band. They all signed the disc liner, and I have it framed. I think the reason this song is so good is because it resonates across the masses. Everyone knows Christmas should be a time of love, happiness and forgiveness...but we have also seen what happens at Christmas. Love, hate, new relationships forming and old relationships falling apart. Family dinners and family arguments. It's a time that highlights the duality of man. Shows our best aspirations and our drink demons.

Genuine question though, why are Christmas songs always so depressing? With a couple of exceptions like “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas” and Slade, most Christmas songs and carols have really miserable lyrics. Even “Don’t let the bells end”, (2nd best Christmas song ever IMHO), is about a loved one leaving you alone during the holidays! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Why are musicians so unhappy at Christmas? 😅

The best always die young. In Shane’s case, it feels like we’ve been robbed because he’s gone at 65. Was lucky enough to see them live a few times.
RIP Shane, a giant of Irish music and culture.

You're right, 65 is young, but I remember feeling compelled to see him when I was 14 bc I was a fan and everyone thought his days were numbered. That was 1998. I'm so happy he lasted longer and I really don't mean to demean your comment bc I honestly love Shane. I just want to say how grateful I am that he lived 30 extra years

@@davidlinehat4657 You're not demeaning it at all. I know exactly what you mean. I saw the Pogues in the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden in 1999, and I remember thinking he was not in great shape back then. I'm so grateful too that he lived as long as he did because many didn't think he would. Listen to their music and smile. I've been listening to Rum, Sodomy and the Lash all day today.
His poetry and music will live as long as human beings play and listen to music, and that will be forever.

There is some mesmerising about someone who effortlessly draws people to just listen to the music. Rough around the edges with a sense of improvisation, this is the rare artist who couldn't care less what people think and the world needs more like him. Real music died a bit today, and the artistic anti-hero of Shane will be missed. My friends in 1987 joked he wouldn't be around much longer, but it's a sad day for sure even though he proved us wrong.

Fairytale of New York effectively shapes memories of Christmas for many, in Ireland as well as abroad I imagine. Shane's music and lyrics kept the irish diaspora, particularly in London grounded, connected, also sedated and wild at the same time. I lived in London for a couple years at the beginning of the nineties bearly out of my teens. Shane and the pogues were in some sense so familiar to us Irish that you could randomly pop into the Mean Fiddler in Harlsden on a Sunday afternoon to find MacGowan on stage jamming with some other irish musician. If your were high spirited and Irish chances were you had a story about drinking with MacGowan. Paddy couldn't do London then without The Pogues. Shane McGowan was an authentic artist and the genuine article.
PS the NYPD choir singing Galway Bay is the the new york police department's band not a military band. Way back in the past many irish imigrants joined the police and fire dept in new york.
