    This is a Hands-On Preview of the Sony a7 IV. We had a pre-production Sony a7 IV for a few weeks to test out. I wanted to run it through it's paces, put it against the Canon R6 and see if it's a mini Sony a1, or just a solid upgrade to the Sony a7 III. This is NOT A REVIEW, you can not fully review a pre-production camera, as the firmware is not final.

    I ordered the A7IV as a 2nd body to go with my A1 - the reasoning behind this was the same processor and menu system, as well as the same body. It's like the A1s little brother, bringing in the brain of the A1 to a cheaper body. I can set it up the same way, it feels the same, and has the same tracking tech. Perfect for this situation.

    Yeah yeah Jared. We get it, you don't like the Nikon Z6 ii. That's cool and all. But advicing people not to buy it is going a bit too far. The Nikon Z6 ii + 24-70 F4 kit lens could be bought for around 2100 euro on this side of the pond. And this new Sony is priced at 2800 euro. That's a BIG difference. If you would add the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70 mm F4 ZA OSS lens, that would be around 3500 euro combined with the body. That's a frikkin 1400 euro difference. No issue for professionals, but for the enthusiasts that's serious money. Are those features worth the difference to someone? Probably. But in the hands of professionals the Canon R6, Sony A7 iV and yes the Nikon Z6 ii are more than capable camera's. AND I think it would be VERY hard to spot the differences in the end results created buy those camera's.

      Go for Canon. There is a class-action on the a7iii shutter life, supposedly rated at 200k, *many* users are experiencing premature failure, what does that say about Sony and their cheap made in China bodies? Canon R6 shutter life rated at 300k, R5 at 500k, and Canon is known to be pretty conservative, and their bodies are made in Japan.

      Sony's quiet shutter styles, new in 2015 in the 42MP α7R II, aid resolution by quelling camera shake. But the 24MP α7 III's shutter, loud and clunky-similar to DSLR mirror shock-seemingly returns for α7 IV's 38% more pixels.

    Thank you for the great breakdown. I've watched a few reviews/previews and for some reason until I watched this I was missing that the slight warping issue was only with the electronic shutter at high speed. i can't wait for the z9 review - especially the weak point of the other z cams, the autofocus. the z9 has a new processor inside that should deliver enough processor power for really fancy autofocus and object detection and tracking algorithms.

    • @phelanwolf6747
      @phelanwolf6747 Před 2 lety +1

      The 3rd Z9 teaser showed human eye and vehicle detection and tracking. It was also able to identify the eye in a low contrast scenario, i.e. a soccer player with very dark skin. What was not shown was animal eye detection and tracking. We can only assume that the AF keeps up with the tracking. We also can only assume that the "slideshow mode" was removed and the EVF always shows the realworld as soon as possible.
      What was shown in the teaser does not indicate in any way that the AF is better or worse than Sony or Canon with their top tier cameras. Same goes for subject identification and tracking.
      It looks like the dust for the transition for the switch to mirrorless cameras is going to settle in 1-2 years and as expected the difference will not be that big between the different camera brands.
      Still waiting for security features. You know simple obvious stuff like fingerprint reader, iris scanner, locking of lenses and equipment to a set of bodies, file encryption for the storage, gps to track the camera.

And modulo AF - which is a big thing - my Z6 II is a better stills camera too, at least for me (but that AF…). For video, this seems better featured - more formats, the hotshoe interface, etc. But I’m surprised at the limitations of the Sony - 6 FPS in lossless compressed, not enough Fn buttons, etc. At least it finally has a simple stills/movie toggle.

    • @mikni4069
      @mikni4069 Před 2 lety

      Why do you think is better, I just don’t see it or is it better because the other one is a Sony.. let me guess that must be it right. The sony has about 61% more resolution, the Canon 20mp is passable but frankly no more. It’s main talking point is it’s AF and speed but as it’s not stacked those 20fps electronic simply isn’t worth very much simply because of the distortion you get in many situations where you would actually want to use it. So it’s really 10 vs 12 or insignificant really one you get 14 bit compressed the other 12bit. The AF performance is so close and the difference in performance is really scenario dependent where one leapfrog the other from scenario to scenario they are really that close.
      The Z6ii has lower resolution and worse AF so I don’t really see it as a better choice.
      And all no exception has serious rolling shutter issues, so it doesn’t really matter if pick the Sony, Nikon and Canon as they are all pretty bad.

    The R6 when shooting 20 FPS saves a 12 bit raw file. However it’s not “compressed” unless you select CRAW. Technically speaking all raw files like DNG and CR2/3 are compressed but just lossless compressed so just do math to make the files smaller. Basically all data these days is compressed when possible. Lossless compression is literally the exact same as uncompressed by definition. You just have to do math to get it and that’s all transparent to the end user who just opens the file in Lightroom.

I'm a budding photographer just stating out my business currently have a cannon 850D and looking to go mirrorless and i progress into doing more potrait and wedding photography. after watching this i think i really have my heart set on the A7III or A7IV. great video, keep up the great work.

    Jared this is another great review. Now I have a big dilemma. Do I go for the original A9 OR A7IV for running dog photography? A9 has 20FPS BUT A7IV has more resolution for larger prints. NOT sure how autofocus compares between those two. Which one would you get as paid dog photographer?

    Sounds like Sony did a cripple hammer even if this camera came out before R6 I would still pick R6. Just some stuff they did to this camera I would say no to it. Should be priced at R

      that's my point exactly... i still have the eos r and basically does almost everything the sony a7iv does and it's the first full frame mirrorless camera from canon.. it's quite embarrassing tbh the only sony's camera that makes me want to switch are a7siii and fx3. Like i would go for it over c70, r5 or c200mkii possibly...

      @@harryvuemedia5106 well absolutely everything minus 2 card slot, dynamic range/low light and 1080p at 120fps, maybe ibis but from many video the stabilization look better on canon even with lens only... it does 5 fps, 30mpx, better evf, better screen, better weather sealed, 4k 4.2.2 (if really needed with ninja v), good sticky auto-focus, less expensive, better lens (rf), less rolling shutter, colour science, better ergonomic imo, the auto-focus is smoother feel more like a focus pulled in video... the only sony that come close to make me switch system are a7siii and fx3 but they are not in the same price range at all but i'd probably go with sony at that price range (over c70, r5, possibly future c200markii)... to be fair, buying from scratch tomorrow i think the a7iv would be a better choice than the eos r (not r6) but in my situation it's not appealing at all. And from someone who already owned an a7iii, not sure it worth it that much either tbh

    What I really like about this Sony is that it challenges Canon to do some updating, while still keeping their prices in line. The Canon R6 you compared against (largely due to price similarity), isn't that old a model. But the original EOS R with 30MP is about due to get an update. The most affordable Canon R-series, the 26MP EOS RP, is the same age and also due to be refreshed. Whether Canon makes "Mark II" versions of them or gives them a number designation (R4? R8?), among other things they need updated AF systems, IBIS, dual card slots, option to use the BG-R10 grip and possibly even BSI sensors to truly make them competitive again. We'll see if Canon rises to the occasion. Competition is good for consumers!

      I don’t think canon will refresh EOS R or RP . Those were interim cameras for Canon to come into full frame Mirrorless.

    for you who has the best AF between the canon R6 and A7IV?
    if you had to choose a camera between the 2?

    Sony ran out of stock of low res tilting screen so they released a7riiia and a7riva. But obviously they still have lots of low res fliping screen.
