    I have an SIII in my cine rig, a 7III as the base for my med-wide lenses, and an RIII for tele and fast primes. I'm probably going to get a 7IV for my med-wide/B-cam for video, and use the 7III for a backup/timelapse/grab-n-go body.

    hey Jared, with so many options now from Sony and 3rd party manufacturers it would be awesome to have a follow up to this video with your idea of what is the right choice of "good glass" for the a7 IV. Choosing a7 IV over a1 I'd like to also not go G-Master all the way, cause this seems an overkill with my needs and skill level.

    Hey Jared, great review, however I feel that calling it a slight improvement on video is not true; I have owned both and the jump on quality with the 10bit files is huge. Specially considering the fact that you can use S-log 3 which makes a huge improvement on dynamic range.

    • @Aroundtheworld-ew6rx
      @Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Před 2 lety +5

      Jared is right! 10 bit will always be better than 8 bit, agree but really, what serious videographer will pick the A7iv over the A7siii. If you are under the A7siii, it doesn't matter if you are A7iv, A7v or A7iii under is under. Jared is use to quality.

    • @kevinchung1492
      @kevinchung1492 Před 2 lety +11

      @@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx if you can afford the extra $1000 and treat it mainly as video camera then yes Siii is the answer.
      But for true hybrid camera A7iv is much better in video than A7iii. Sure in a well lit studio like Jared has; the A7iii will works. But in most situation the color banding alone from 8bit is a deal killer. On top a7iv also have better dynamic, better color science, better auto focus, full size HDMI etc

    • @VoxeeMedia
      @VoxeeMedia Před 2 lety +5

      @@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx I actually have used both. Agree on the a7siii being better in video, except on 24fps where the A7iv is more crisp and detail due the oversampling. However if you do both and only want to take one body with you and your photography game is serious the a7siii is limiting.
      Oh and one fact, true that the crop on 60p is a pain, but tbh it is not a big deal for me as I can adjust framing or lens, and If I shoot 60p will be tighter anyway to be slow it down. And the ability to crop to apc/s35 and still having a high quality 4k is something I have missed on the siii.
      Again, I would say that you are being very bold, and that it will or not be worth it depending on budget and use case

    • @juliusheigl1015
      @juliusheigl1015 Před 2 lety

      totally true, everyone who has worked with the 4:2:2 10 bit of the a7sIII in comparison to the 4:2:0 8 bit of the A7III knows that there is an incredibly huge result in quality. With Slog3 and S Cinetone, combined with the Alister V LUTs it is such a nice image, where the A7III is not even close at. For me that's actually the biggest reason to upgrade, because I can use the a7IV now as B Cam for my A7SIII

  • @DeepSnowRider
    @DeepSnowRider Před 2 lety +1

    I’m very happy with my A74 it’s my companion to my A7R3. My A74 is my go-to for street, sports, film and Mated usually to my 24-70 Gmaster or 200-600. My A7R3 is my Astro, portrait/studio, landscape body and mater with my 20 1.8 or 85mm.
    For weddings I can use the A74 to film and R3 for stills.
    The A74 enlarged grip is welcomed, new mode dials are helpful, swivel screen is better than the tilt. Full sized HDMI out is great.
    My wish list for the A7R5 is the A74 body with a RAW size selection ability like the D850 had.
    A major reason I didn’t upgrade from the R3 to R4 was no raw file size selection ability and being forced to shoot everything 62mp unless I shot Aps-c.

    The A7IV offers better support for the LA-EA5 adapter compared to the A7III, as it supports AF on A-mount screw driven lenses as well. The A7IV with LA-EA5 is a good upgrade path for people that still own a lot of A-mount stuff.

    Hi Jared. I think your points about 1. buying used and 2. prioritising glass are bang on the money literally.
    I've recently moved to Sony and picked up a very nice used A7R IV at a very competitive price from my local camera store. That is going to let me get the FE 200-600 rather than having to think about getting the Sigma.
    New and shiny is nice but getting a deal brings a nice warm fuzzy feel. If I was weighing up between a III and IV I'd probably go for the III and either spend the extra on glass or really good filters or any other quality kit really.

    Great video as always. One benefit of the silent shutter is keeping the shutter count down which really helps when you go to sell. Also replacing shutters is not cheap and it will reduce the need to do so. I just got top money for a A7RIV as the shutter count was only 1600 despite me taking an estimated 35,000 photos. If the A7IV was usable under artificial light in electronic shutter it would be a perfect wedding camera. My A9 and A7IV make a good pairing for weddings

    I recommend the a7IV overall. It's Sony's PERFECT hybrid camera right now and especially at $2,500. All the video features that were not in the a7iii is here in the a7IV. If you're primary just shooting photography, then the A7iii will be the best for you and at a lower price of $2,000. Eventually you will want the video autofocus, 10-bit color and S-cinetone, so keep that in mind when you're going to buy the a7iii. I've upgraded to the a7IV and I love everything about it.

      It's better for photography as well as for video work...
      1. 33MP which is the sweet spot for all studio, sports, motorsports and action work, as well as not being too much for photographers in other fields.
      2. Better (WAY BETTER) Eye/Face AF tracking (and not only is it better, it's also WAY faster too.)
      3. Better (WAY BETTER) low light focus performance in terms of both accuracy and speed.
      4. Better low light/high ISO performance.
      5. Better color science (almost on par with Canon and Nikon) - meaning less time spent color correcting your images before you begin editing.
      If you shoot sports, motorsports, any kind of studio work, landscapes, wildlife or events - you WILL want those 33MP and you WILL want the near-perfect AF (there's literally no real world difference in AF between the A1 and a7IV - in 40 minutes of test shooting, both the A1 and a7IV had 85/85 shots in focus aka. 100% of the shots in focus.) And I don't think I even need to mention the amazing low light performance with both high ISO settings and the autofocus.

      @@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Not necessarily. The 2nd native ISO of the A7S3 being at 12800 is not very practical for most applications. In dark scenarios with some available light (even run&gun), 3200 or 6400 ISO is enough. And at those levels, the A7iv significantly outperforms the A7S3. A7S3 is better for people who either light their scenes and shoot at lowest native ISO, or something like documentaries. Or people who really really need the 4k120p and ProRes Raw.

      @@professionalpotato4764 Agree, Lights are essential. People forget videography and photography are art. If someone is shooting at high iso to capture an extremely low light scene, I'll recommend for them to take a class in lighting before buying any camera over 1000 dollars. Shooting sports or weddings could be the exception because capturing the moment is more important than photography or videography.

    Thank You Jared for all your work!
    I'm a pro photographer in NYC, I have Sony 16-35, 24-70 and the 70-200 all GM f/2.8 glass. I have the A73 and A7R3. I still work both as still and video. My experience with the A7R3 is not the best, yes, it has a lot of MP, but its a little sluggish and slow, not in moving the files, more in acquiring focus. I recently had to fix my A73 those starting the debate if its worth the $ to fix or should I upgrade. the fix is only $300 so I'm going to fix it but i was thinking of trading my A7R3 to the A74. I will get more $ for the R and will have a camera with no video record time. Would I see a difference in colors and tones between the A73 and the A74? of course I will shoot both bodies in the same events whether its stills or video. I hear you about spending the extra $ and going for the A7s3, I'm not that happy about having another hybrid camera, and I can't really use that as a still camera for work. I had my eye on the FX6 but those are no where to be found now, and spending $3-4k on a used FS5 / FS5m2 is Ehh... not happy about it to say the least.
    So can I live with A73 and A74? should I upgrade both to the A74? or should I do nothing now and buy the Sony 28-135mm f4 OSS GM? which is also no where to be found as of now?
    I appreciate your opinion.
    Thank you!!!

    Jared, I know I'm coming late to the party but there was a technical issue with the A7III at the time that might make you take back the check mark you give it about burst shooting ^^
    I don't know if it's been fixed in later firmware updates but I remember that back in the day, shooting burst in compressed RAW mode was actually greatly reducing the quality and the dynamic range of the files compared to the single shooting mode...
    I think it was explained in Mike Smith video or something like that...
    Also, from someone shooting photos/videos for a living and who recently changed from A7III to A7IV, the difference in quality, in between both 4k is absolutely huge in my opinion oO
    I don't know why most CZcamsrs and reviewers say there is not much of an improvement, in my experience, it's literally day and night oO
    I mean I now use my A7III as B-cam and it even hurts me when I have to switch to it in a Multicam... -_-
    Off course the colourimetry but also the detail, the contrast and the overhaul image are much sharper, and much clearer, the A7III look to me like a bunch of mushy pixels now ^^

    For a prosumer like myself that does little to no video, I weighed getting the A7ii vs the A7IV just recently and got the A7iii on a deal and I honestly probably still would get the A7iii no matter what. Normally when I buy a camera I have some regrets and say maybe I should have spent more and gotten a different one but this time I am just fine and quite content. After having multiple Sonys and Canons over the years I kind of come to the conclusion I really don't like the flippy screens either despite their usefulness.

      Hey, I'm switching from Canon 60D and was whinking about a7IV, although it cost much more than a7III. (around 1000 usd)... do you think that A7III with f.e. Sony 24-105 is gonna be a great choice? Are you still satisifed with your choice or do you see some drawbacks which makes you regret not taking A7IV? Do use it also for video or just photo?

    • @JulianPhotofit

      @@losiek008 I am really satisfied with the performance. I was shooting last night at a night Market, and it performed really well in low light. I’m using the Tamron 28 to 75 2.8. It barely missed any focus. I think the Sony 24-105 2.8 would be a great choice. Sony has good glass but it’s expensive. That’s why I went the Tamron route. Right now I’m using it for photos only. I had to buy a better and faster memory card to shoot 4K. So that’s on the way. The only drawback is that I can’t shoot 4K 60 but I can get around that. It would have been great to get the A7IV but I’m super satisfied with my choice. No buyers remorse here.
