Every now and then you run into that player who does something conventionally weird: Aphelios Top, Wukong Support, Qiyana ADC, Kha'Zix Mid, etc. Sometimes they find success, but most of the time they feed. So are they considered trolling or creative picks?

Also, once weird off-meta picks have become strong meta picks in the past. League players are extremely narrow-minded, and the game design encourages you to experiment. If you've found an off-meta pick that works for you, remember, *it's only off-meta until everyone uses it.*

There is something called normals for trying shit mr.smartass, the problem itself is not the pick is where they choose to try it, and how they don't care about the comp since they will get flamed anyway.

I played a lot of graves mid for 6 months before it was meta, it was always that strong people just never tested it.
So I will bring whatever weird pick I want into ranked despite what my team has to say about it

I was playing Jungle Morgana since season 8, when i started, and i was reported multiple times even when performing well. Cut to this year when Morgana Jungle was one of the best...smh.
The reason Morg jung was good this seson was because she got buffs to her W against monsters lol

If you have a win condition with an off meta champ considering the current team comps in champ select I fully support it. It's when people lock it in without thinking through the win con I tend to want to dodge.
The problem is it's hard to know the difference, and the majority of the time someone picks off meta in my games it's troll. So I tend to just dodge now, even though I would like to play around off meta players who know what they're doing.
Because of the insane item changes, and if im not mistaken, her jungle clear was buffed too, thats why she was meta? Maybe try to use your brain next time you try to write something.

13:00 - 13:08 AKA. Everytime a support DARES to get out of line they nerf it to the ground to just work as support, even as detriment on that role.
At the early league, off-meta are always creative and fun. Now people only see it as trolling.

how would you feel if you have a syndra or oriana support who do nothing all game, call it off meta and how they are not trolling because they saw a challanger player doing it and so you lose no matter how hard you try
As a Yorick main, I can safely say some people will consider you to be trolling even when playing a champ as he was inteded to be played.

This. Never understood people in League who immediately default to flaming their teammates, then get surprised when their teammates give up on the game or refuse to cooperate with them.

@@borkguy I definitely think a lot of the people who act like this in-game were just socialized improperly or smth because there's no way any well-adjusted human being genuinely decides that abusing your teammates will make them cooperate with you better or want to help you out.
This happened once while supporting as my main, Sion. My ADC didn't believe that Sion could actually serve as a good support and mocked me for the choice, thinking I was some sort of troll. Ten minutes into the game, I've earned more kills than my ADC, and saved him from death multiple times thanks to Sion's knock-ups, stuns, and slows. After that, my ADC apologized multiple times throughout the game.
There are some off-meta picks that are actually straight-up good or even op(ww top, kindred bot lane, pyke mid and on and on). Sometimes they become meta. Gragas top/mid was a thing before season 11 but since Gragas jg now is almost not viable at all people have realised that Gragas top is actually pretty damn strong. Even if they're not the best picks sometimes, finding new and creative ways to play the game and finding out that it has potential in your dogshit elo is one of the most exciting things about the game, at least imho.
I play with 2 friends that play Pyke Kindred botlane and it is so disgustingly good. The slow from kindred makes it easy to land hooks, pyke ult after kindred ult is really good, pyke can roam with Kindred for marks, etc.
Here’s the thing though? I didn’t think It would work at all. I didn’t say anything, but I had literally 0 hope that they could make it work, but they did.
Moral of the story; Off meta=different but good
Trolling= different and bad.

I really don't like the whole "off-meta = trolling" thing. One of my favorite builds is AP Sion, but I've stopped doing so due to the amount of flame I got, even when I did really well.

When Poppy was just reworked i played her as a support alongside my Veigar friend as ADC. Yordle synergy was astounding
She is BETTER as a Support than any other role. You cannot change my mind. Poppy has the most insane peel of any Support. If you can get your enemy into a bad position for even a moment, you can punish them with so much hard CC. POPPY IS A SUPPORT
E into a wall or run infront of them and e back, Blocking dashes (Anti Vayne, Lucian, Leona etc.) And an Ult that makes Ganks Useless or turns a 3v4 into a 3 v1
@@IAmValefree Poppy is a GREAT support, but I'd argue that she's still best in the jungle because she's more consistent. Similar play style but with free roam to the entire map.

Though I quit that, moved into playing bard support cause I am more of an play safe and poke

As someone who tend to play off-meta champs, I find it just as normals picks most of the time, just with different strategies, just like the anti-carries point, probably the enemy and ally team don't know how to play arround you, wich for example, I can rarely expect to play Tresh top at his fullewt when the ally jg doesn't gank, but also I expect to people trying to gank warwick top when he's at his best in 1v2, so I guess why they give a bad image, but also I think they are totally justified even in competitive play.
I play Morgana mid into LeBlanc (since my Anivia gets destroyed by her). Many LeBlancs don't know that Morgana is nearly impossible to kill for her and she became popular as a midlane for countering her during OP LeBlanc period.
My god, people in gold (lower don't know even that) barely know how to build their champs and you asking them to "play around" something? META is there just so people don't actually need to think what they have to pick for their team. And RIOT enforcing it (when I stopped playing in season 5) was disgusting.
Off meta champion =/= playing off meta. If you pick idk, aurelion/azir mid, nobody will give a flying fuck but if you try to invent your own meta with bard adc(because hur dur dur his meeps gives so much extra damage + alot of selfpeel) youre definitelly going to get banned.
I remember I was playing Top Soraka and ran across and enemy top Soraka she absolutely decimated me and it was the most awesome thing ever off-meta picks really reignited my love for the game
I played Soraka top before I even tried Soraka support! Back when I didn’t know what runes were or anything like that. Good times haha
I had a 1v1 yuumi mid game yeah that was a banger
ironically first time i played Yuumi was top vs a Quinn. i actually kept that lane safe till 20 minute mark
i also played Janna for a long time in mid till i even learnt she's a support. enemy assassins were like flys for me

I actually think offmeta-picks are something positive, since they make the games less samey. Apart from that I think it is just great if you can put some creative thinking into the game by making up new strats. I don't think you really get this by playing meta

Vars is so optmistic in thinking that voice com will help anyone. Randoms won't use it in any way positive, and friend groups and pro players probably already have their own established communication methods. The fact that he thinks that explaining your off-meta strat will help is silly, cause if you have to explain it to someone, then they've probably already resigned themselves to a bad attitude and won't listen anyway; leading to a distracting argument. Mature players will wait to see what you can do, and any info given in text chat will be enough. For anyone else, there is simply no reasoning.

In practice, all voice coms would do is have almost no one use it except for the flamer who will scream slurs at you until you mute them or that one guy blasting music all game

If the player got to your exact rank playing Orianna support, he plays enough of it and is good enough to be the same rank. He, on average, is just as valuable as you, because the algorithm thinks you two are very similar. His individual skill counteracts his weaker pick, so all is even.

This is gonna be a somewhat long rant but it'll try to keep it entertaining and on this video's topic.
When everyone was going ThunderLord's Decree, I went Stormraider's Surge. A single blue chord from my Sona during that time gave me a massive speed boost that had certain applications. Such applications included a second Sheen-powered chord that did the REST of their health bar at level 5 with the movement speed needed to chase them, and hitting a target with a chord to run away from them while I channeled my inner Singed. Then Runes Reforged hit and I was given the gift of Predator Sona. 300 gold for a won lane. No, I am not kidding. I back once, you're dead. No, there's no running away, I'm faster than you. No, you can't hide under your tower, I thought ahead and bought health prior. I get in range? You're one-shotted. And I'm GOING to get in range. You decide to fight me? You're still dead. And then there's the applications of ambushing the enemy jungler when I know they're low at a camp of theirs and also roaming mid or suddenly abandoning my lane partner to take part in a fight or cause one. Predator Sona was instant death at any moment. Whenever I hit that active effect on my boots, SOMEONE was gonna die that night. And I REVELED in it. Nowadays, Predator isn't good on her anymore and Sona doesn't have the damage thanks to the constant nerfs in order to be a burst mage or AP Assassin without receiving backup from her team. She's now strictly a medic with no late game besides her heals and shields, of which other champs can do better. But legit, the run was fun. It was a good feeling running at the enemy full tilt with murderous intent in the air. Shame I had my playstyle taken away from me. :|

There is no greater high than risking your life on every single engage against a worthy opponent with equal power to you where a single mistake by you means your instant death and a single mistake by them means their instant death. All with both of you able to counter each other's strategies at a half-second's notice or less. It's bliss. I'd say it's better than sex. I had my blood pounding in my arms during that 1v1 with that Vayne player back in season six and a sadistic twisted depraved grin on my face the entire time. They even respected me afterwards. Oh gods, it's been years since I've felt that feeling. I want it again. I want it bad. But I know with the pansy-ass playerbase of today and me having fallen since my prime I won't be getting it again. Fuck, that felt good. Where's my goddamn snuff film? Give me back season five, Riot. Give me back my debauchery.

Im an orianna onetrick and i think shes very weak midlane so I tested her as adc and support and support actually works. If you build her with shurelia and max e with aery its super strong. Your e gives 30armor and mr (maxed). Your w with shurelias is a good engage and q to reposition your ball to 5 man ult. Its very strong, hope you give it a try.
She was originally a Mid/Support in The past

I have seen plently of meta picks going 2/10, so I dont really care what people play as long as they arent toxic.
Those that go that score don't know why the pick is meta or how it works plus they could have probably accidently picked it into a counter which does happen if you always try to be a meta slave

I once went with a Jungler Braum and it was surprisingly good with the kit I used... Also the insults I received during the whole game were worth it.
PS: We won those games and I even got to carry certain lanes and do most of my objectives like the Dragons, Herald and Baron.

Before the premiere of this video I'd like to talk about my experience with off meta picks. First of all I totally encourage some off meta pick that would generally work in the way they want to play it. (Like quinn adc, zilean mid, ww top, nunu support and so on) because they have some tools that would be very good in that specific role. (like quinn that has a nearsight and her e like a disengage or engage depends on the situation, it can counter many botlane comps just with her anti-carry potential) However, there are certain off meta picks that are considered troll (like yummi jgl or some other things that should not even work if played that way) and I don't support it.
Yeah, idk why everyone hating on my singed jungle, like I'm one trick singed with 70% wr and I play him jg, it's not troll pick it's just off meta and in my opinion sleeper op. And so many people reporting me even though I'm playing seriously and winning alot of games with singed jg.
@@zezk5819 yeah singed jgl is suprisingly a good pick, decent clear, nice ganking potential, very mobile and useful in teamfights even if I played him like 5 or 6 times I still had a blast.

If it works then it’s not trolling, just realize there’s ppl who have never played with/against it.
My favorite pick is Lillia adc with my friend on nami support. Nobody knows how to deal with us and we usually 2v8 games together because the nami E interaction with Lillias passive is just insane. I can littery oneshot adcs with one ability if nami has mandate and i have some items.
Saying you can oneshot an adc is like saying you can see through a window.

Off meta picks are honestly kind of healthy in keeping the game fresh, and more often than not what was once off meta becomes meta, like nobody thought to play AP yi years ago until the play base showed how it worked (to which riot responded by reworking yi damage values in general)
To be honest I kinda prefer playing some champs in off meta roles than in their intended roles.
For example predator Singed support is better than top because he has the luxury to not farm, therefore not bein abused too much, all while having a good engage potential

Today I've reached platinum for the first time playing duo with my brother that's currently Gold II, we've played a lot of ad crit Thresh and full tank/mana regen Blitz on both lane, and a lot of time people were accusing us of inting because I wasn't using a "proper champ, or a real ADC"(that's wrong, I was literally the carry building AD, crit Thresh does a lot of damage, and people aren't usually expecting that much damage deal by a support), or reporting us because the team had lost, even if I was doing fine, a match our Fizz mid was mocking the enemy bot lane for losing to a Thresh, and me and my brother were carrying that game super hard.
I always open to off picks, there's a reason on why someone is playing Renek/Leona bot, and more often than not, they're not trolling (of course, a full ad Yummi jungle is simply a troll, but off meta picks can work like any other pick)
Tl Dr: Thresh AD on a hook lane with Blitz is fun and learn to accept an off meta pick.

Great video, as an off-meta strategist I do make off-meta picks but I try to find picks that play similar to others so its not as hard for my team to adjust. But I always try to practice the pick a LOT in normal before going into ranked.
I'm all for unorthodox picks, i'm not for unorthodox picks that you have little to no experience with before trying in ranked.
I do love that there is the possibility for creativity and flexibility in League and it's awesome hearing people discover new weird off meta things that work, but I only like seeing it when people are actually experienced and confident with it. So much of the time people will try off meta picks in ranked with no mastery for the champ because they think they found some broken unheard of thing that people don't know how to play against, but you can never get around champion mastery. And there's also the point that just because something CAN work, doesn't mean that it's GOOD.

I'm a support main and got filled ADC and I was so pissed at first when the support locked in Kayle because "I'm playing my secondary for this?".. we completely stomped their bot lane and won the game.

My favorite off-meta pick will always be AD TF. I was doing it before it became popular, and I'm still doing it long after it "fell off". It's TF, except he does damage. What's more terrifying than a ranged Nocturne with more ult range?

I personally like the League in off meta style. And, that makes me a bit sad with new champs. They have only one type of scaling, and in some circumstances, you are not so flexible in playing different styles. Like, I remember back in the old days, the Riot themselves recommended jungle Zed on his champion spotlight, as well as a Morde jungle.
Also, most important part of playing off-meta champs - it is fun ;D!
Edit: Ps, also as someone pointed in the comments, I do not think the off-meta is trolling, if you have got some kind of strategy or point behind it. As mentioned, on HappyChimeNoises' channel most (have not watch all videos) of the players has some mind behind their pick. By the way, one tricking has to do something with off-meta style, since you can play the champ kinda perfectly, so your style may pass on different roles.
I think the other great thing about off meta is it can help you understand what the real fundamentals are for a specific role. It can also help us to understand how to counter certain champions/mechanics that we can then apply to other champions to help us overall.
My opinion: in normals and especially in fun modes, youre supposed to have the most fun you can get so play whatever you want. In ranked, pls just play the champs that you spent a lot of time on and feel comfortable on.
2:25 I *hate* that acronym because it's wrong. META is not the most effective tactic available, it is merely what people choose to play (and generally is *an* effective tactic, as people tend to prefer winning to losing). More to the point, in most cases that actual most effective tactics are not actually known (or at least, aren't well-known). If players are serious about wanting to get better at the game, imo, they must do some amount of experimenting (whether it's w/ different runes on their fav. champ+position combo or different items and build orders, etc). But this also extends to what champions to play in what positions, do enough of this kind of experimenting and you start to understand what a champion actually needs to be successful in a given position (and similarly for a team-wide level what a teamcomp needs to win games).
Agreed, just because Predator Malphite jg isn’t used a lot doesn’t mean it’s worse than Viego jg or voli

I think it always depends. Since I one trick Azir one could already say I play Off-Meta but there's higher levels of Off-Meta. For example teemo support in the Mid Lane. This is way more ambiguous as to wether or not it's trolling or not
I have a lot of fun playing Orianna support, and I win the vast majority of my games, but most of the games I do lose, is due to my ADC dying 3 minutes in, blaming me because of the ori pick, and then just gives up on the match.

a year ago I was a tank maokai jungle main, I climbed from B2 all the way to S2. It was very fun to play soloQ in that time. I think off meta is good and creative and it is fun to see different strategies pop up here and there.
I quite enjoy doing a Darius Jgl, most people aren't expecting it and the bleed helps clear jgl fairly quickly. Plus your E is so useful for ganks.

My best friend used to play pyke mid with hail of blades and resolve going full lethality in february 2020. Later in 2020 that build got meta. We (me and my best friend) were new at the game and he liked pyke and made the runes he thought are the best for him (the best for pyke)
When I get fed as Bard, I'll probably go full AD and roam :D

Personal Opinion regarding Voicechat in League: The highs of using it well doesn't outweigh the LOWS of people screamshitting into mic. For me at least.

I find it weird at first but when I think of it, he’s basically one of those midlaners who just went to support role but with more roaming potential thanks to his E, although tbh it took me and my other friends a few minutes to figure it out, we eventually stick to a plan of just leaving our ADC by himself in bot lane in the mid game as everyone just roamed to the fully potential

I got a Shyv supp that built Warmog after a tank mythic. As an adc I was both shocked and amazed that the lane pressure is so powerful.

If you regret the changing of build for kai'sa in season 11, you can try my off-meta build that let you go whatever type of damage you'd want while maintaining a solid core build.
Runes: Classic meta kai'sa build primary runes *(HoB and stuff)*, sorcery for secondary with manaflow band and gathering storm.
Items: Core: Trinity > Ravenous Hydra > Nashor's Tooth > Berserker's Boots
At this point you have your 3 abilities evolved.
Then it's up to you :
- Ap : Horizon Focus > Rabadon
- On hit : Botrk > Guinsoo's
- Ad semi letha : Serylda > adaptative item

I'm doing some games with Pyke jungle in normals. Early clears are awful, but doable after first item. The ganks are really good though and I'm having a lot of fun with it
See I love to see off meta picks because they’re fun and sometimes they can work out REALLY well.
Like on of my best recent ranked games was when I was playing senna support for a thresh bot lane but I also recognize that I was able to do well because i was able to play around him and other support players might struggle with that

For me, as a Graves ADC main, the first con that you listed is always a big problem. People keep expecting me to do things that they wouldn't expect from a different short-ranged ADC like Samira for example, even though it's obviously not something I can do.
i think the main issue is that there are 2 types of off-meta, 1) the weird build that make sense due to some (usually) unused scallyng on a champ (like full AP shen) or some mechanic the champ has (like ADC ahri due her dashes).
And 2) building random thing just because (good old tank teemo jungle)
Don't forget that playing a character off-role is off-meta.
Playing the Tank on-hit build for Kog'Maw in the jungle is an off meta pick I've been polishing since the item rework and I'm proud of how well it does. It feels like playing a normal jungler, but you have to kite both camps and champions really well to make it work. I also play jungle Yorick but he's pretty much viable now with the buffs on the E were it summons nearby wraiths.

Can remember in Season 3, went Nautilus support a few games because I thought he'd be similar to Leona and got accused of trolling. Less than a year later Lemon Nation was using it in the LCS. Felt very vindicated that day.

I have a corki support/top build which is strangely strong, and has been for the last two seasons. Rush black cleaver and run grasp for easy poke and extra health scaling.
I remember when I played Soraka Top before that one time she got popular and "broken", everyone was being toxic at me (even though the game didn't start, and even after I won some), then a pro player played her and no one was toxic during that week.
regarding the mic, the enviroment is way more important than the mic you use while recording. You might need some thick blankets on your walls to prevent ecoing.
I'd use a de-esser too, the S sounds kinda harsh

Nice mic, Vars, though I don't see much difference. As for the video, I'll just mimic the crowd and say it's better to have fun than to be a tryhard, though even that has a place in the game.
Anyways, a suggestion I think you could consider doing is covering Morgana. She's one of the few champions who remains unchanged for entire seasons, and I think that's worth something.

One of the few instances I went off meta by accident was Morgana Jungle before her changes that made her a viable jungler. I picked Morgana cause I thought I was support. Then I realized I was Jungle too late after I locked in Morgana.
The beginning of the game I was thinking I was trolling my friends for this and was gonna have a terrible time. I then proceeded to destroy the enemy team with Morgana Jungle. The ganks weren't half bad as long as I held my Q till it was a guaranteed hit. I did very well. We ended up winning pretty one sidedly too. It was fun.

an off meta pick that I like (but is very matchup dependant) is actually support Ekko.
especially if you can get bush control, then his W stun as well as his quick and easy burst trades can help push the opponent out of lane if not outright securing kills.
