- Cool Classics take a deep dive into the life of Paul Lynde who played Uncle Arthur on the Bewitched TV Series. He also appeared multiple times on I Dream Of Jeannie and The Munsters. His time on the Hollywood Squares was legendary, but did you see him on the Dean Martin and Carol Burnett Show? What a comedian! How about the movie Bye Bye Birdie with Dick Van Dyke?
Thank You to Everyone that has been commenting, sharing and being nice to me!! I almost quit making these videos in April, May and June! I felt like I was talking only to myself, except for the occasional hater 🤣 This channel is part of my self therapy, but now it feels like Group Therapy 😁😁😁 You are ALL the Coolest! 💙
I'm really glad you didn't quit. I'm sorry I didn't give you more praise on your earlier videos. You definitely have a loving group of followers !
If you had quit we would all have missed out on some very cool and interesting facts on some of our favorite childhood programs. A big thank you for hanging in there and not giving up 😁😙
Your very cool yourself. ❤👍❤👍❤👍❤👍😄🇺🇸
Your stories a SUPER entertaining, all of us enjoy them 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼😃
Sometimes I don’t get an opportunity to see your vids .. I may not be online or other ..
Pls never stop sharing your treasures

I love you. Sometimes these videos make me sad but I still love all of these actors and shows and I don't want them to be forgotten.
Paul Lynde was once asked on the Hollywood Squares "What are two things you should never do in bed?" Without hesitation, he shot back with "Point and laugh." That's why we're still talking about him, and I hope we always will be.
As a little girl, I loved the 1973 Charlotte’s Web cartoon movie. I used to watch it over and over. I can recognize his voice anywhere as Templeton the rat. He’s very animated and was born to be in show biz. I’m so glad he didn’t give up, and got himself help, very courageous especially in those days!
I remember enjoying watching Paul Lynde throughout the 70's on the squares.I could watch re runs all day and never get bored.A true comedic genius. He is missed.
👍💜
My very favorite Paul Lynde line from Hollywood squares was when he was asked "Paul, who stays pregnant longer, your wife, or your elephant?" and Lynde replies in perfect comedy timing "who told you about my elephant?" I still LMAO every time I see it.
🤣
I loved Paul in everything he did, especially Bewitched & Hollywood Squares. It's a shame he died so young. He was so funny.💕🐞
Best Paul Lynde moment on "Hollywood Squares:" Peter Marshall: "If a man falls off a boat, you yell "Man overboard!" What do you yell if a woman falls off a boat?" Paul Lynde: "Full speed ahead!"
🤣🤣🤣I was just a kid when Lynde was on the Hollywood Squares so, the majority of his jokes went right over my head. I would still laugh because he just had great delivery. (I laughed but didn’t know why I was laughing.)
Now I totally get his one-liners. He had some great zingers! 🤣🤣🤣
@@deniece0821 A great one of his was included here: Q. If a person had their leg over the arm of a chair, would that be likely to make them more agreeable? PL's answer: "Are we talking about a man or a woman?"
@@TheRealDrJoey 🤣🤣🤣 He was hilarious! He was actually born and raised not far from me. He’s buried in a cemetery about an hour’s drive from where I live. One of these days I’d like to make a trip there to the cemetery.
Yes, I recall that funny line as well!
That's my favorite, too🤣🤣🤣
I am 65. There’s so few of us left who absolutely love these old, classic TV shows. Thank you for all your hard work keeping these memories alive. 💕
Karen Cahill....I am 70, so count me as another of the 'few"..!!
There's plenty of us out there enjoying watching the classic tv shows and movies. ☺️
You are so right.
I am 36, but me and my friends love old, classic TV shows. So you're wrong.
@@strangerinwhite That is great to read and great to know. At some point many years from now...hopefully...(I still have a lot of things I want to see and do), we older fans of the old T.V. shows will be gone and it will be up to you and other younger people to keep the interest alive and keep these old shows available here on YT and other places....and for free.
As do most of us Baby Boomer era folks, I just loved Paul Lynde. From his hilarious appearances on Bewitched to movies, TV specials, and of course, The Hollywood Squares, watching this unique funny man was always a great treat. RIP Paul, you are truly missed. 💖

@@CoolClassics Did you know that Paul Lynde played a driving instructor on Bewitched before he became Uncle Arthur?
YES HE IS TRULY MISSED!!!
I was a boy in the 80s who spent a lot of time with my grandparents... And im so glad I did. I grew up on the classics from Lucy to Bonanza. Paul was a delight on bewitched and Papa liked Hollywood Squares.... Great times!!!!
His infectious sense of humor and the laugh that followed was priceless and his legacy. He definitely deserved that raise on Hollywood Squares.
Paul Lynde was waaaaay ahead of his time. Some of his one-liners were hilarious.
After 911 someone asked him if being frisked by airport security bothered him. He said "It's the only reason I fly!"
@@bigtex4058 he died in 1982. How could he make a comment after 9/11 if he had been dead for 29 years? 🤨
@@williambatson2514 his attempt at humor I guess.
On Hollywood Square:
Peter Marshall: “When a man falls overboard it’s traditional to say ‘Man Overboard’. What do you say when a woman falls overboard”?
Paul: “Full speed ahead”.
@@williambatson2514 Sounds like something he would say though. 😄
I loved him as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched.
Me too
Same
I loved when he showed up on that show 😂
Two thumbs up here from me for concentrating on the positive aspects of his career, and for showing just what a comic genius he was. He is legend; there will never be another like him.
😁👍
I loved how he would laugh at his own jokes with a big grin on his face. He has such a quick wit..No one could deliver a zinger better than he did.
HIS LAUGH WAS SO CONTAGIOUS one of my favorites
I loved him on on Hollywood squares and the funny answers. He would give my mom and dad watched it every day and we have a box of Kleenex with us and laughed so hard we have to use the Kleenex to wipe the tears away. I miss him a lot and I miss Hollywood squares also.
Real talent. You just don't see it anymore.
I grew up seeing and hearing Paul on TV and movies. His voice was iconic, and he went well before his time. Much respect for his career and life.
THE voice of Hanna Barbera villains for YEARS.
It's such a tragedy that such a Brilliant star as Paul, who had such great comedic timing couldn't live his life as the true man that he was. But those WERE the times, and he deserved better!! RIP Paul.
As a kid all I remember is trying to imitate his voice like Tempeton
What about Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web?!
The voice of the 70's. Paul Lynde's voice was in ALL the cartoons. He was one of the many outstanding talents of that *Grand* era !
I liked him in the perils of Penelope Pitstop.
Slyvester Sneakly a.k.a The Hooded Claw
Bewitched was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid and Paul Lynde's Uncle Arthur was a real treat. Thank you for your review of his career.
What a thorough and complete history of this great comedian. Excellent work! Great video!
I agree 100%
I agree, GOOD job😊
By the way, all documented.

I LOVED Paul Lynde! You never knew what would come out of that mouth of his!
@@John-ik2eg gross
Sort of the Groucho Marx of his era.
His voice quick wit and body language
was awesome. If Paul couldn't make a person laugh they were hopeless. Excellent history 👏 . Thank you.
My favorite joke from Paul Lynde was on Bewitched when he said “My feet are killing me” and he had two guns on his feet shooting him I still find that hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
I could see Beatljuse doing the same
That’s my favorite too!
And it’s still hilarious!
@@beckigreen Mine too!
That was mine too. Lol
I love this channel, it brings me back to the good old days. I "met" Paul Lynde, in 1973 or 1974, I think, can't remember exactly. I was in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the Condado area, he was unfortunately very drunk and lost, he was too heavy for one person to carry people kept saying "call the police" but we new what would happen to him if we did, so it took a couple of hours just to find out where he was staying. It took three people to help him get to his hotel. To this day I'm convinced that he never knew how he got to the hotel. I'm sure the hotel staff were very discreet about the whole situation. Plus I don't think they knew who he was. There was no cable tv at that time in the Island. He was a great actor who had a tough life.
Wow!
Thank you for being such a decent human being and rescuing him.
@@williamsstephens thanks!
There were three of us and unfortunately I'm the last survivor, my friends have passed since then three years apart. I know the hotel staff was discreet because I never read anything about it anywhere.
I'm sure Lynde appreciated you not calling the cops- and Paul getting to keep his wallet and watch.
Honestly that's the most selfless celebrity rescue story I ever heard, next to actually saving someone's life.
Make enough people laugh and you always have friends. .
i was a kid in the 70s and loved paul lynde on hollywood squares. even if you didn't get the jokes, it was his personality and delivery that made everything funny.
I saw Paul on most of those shows, movies and game shows and I always thought that he did a stellar job. I couldn't care less what his sexual orientation was.....he was Paul...a talented and caring person with a love of booze.
Geniuses are rarely understood.
Paul was a comedic genius.
RIP Paul.
Agreed
He should've sought a cardiologist after both parents died of heart failure at 55+/-
There are many stories about Paul being an incredibly mean person when he drank too much.
@@chrispnw2547 Unfortunately, a lot of alcoholics turn from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde under the influence. Otherwise, they are actually a nice person.
I always loved Paul Lynde, whether it was Bewitched, Hollywood Squares or the movies. His role in Bye, Bye Birdie. My favorite quote from Hollywood Squares was Peter Marshall asked “When is the best time to pluck your eyebrows” he replied very confused “August?”
Nice tribute to a real talent.
Paul didn't need to use coarse language because he was a Master with the innuendos. The whole family could watch his show and he was funny for the kids but hilarious for the adults because the kids didn't understand.
I use to love his laugh along with his voice and how he would shake his head after a witty remarks. RIP Miss you Paul
Paul was one hilarious person...
Those Hollywood Squares shows were hysterical... And he was probably the quickest thinking person in the business at the time.
Absolute genius.
Wow, his dad was so supportive! Good for him, but too bad he died so young. It would have probably made him so happy to see his son’s success.
Loved Paul Lynde, he was hysterical! What a great dad he has. Tragic his family dying so young! Thank you!!
I remember watching Hollywood Squares just because I loved Paul Lynde. His humor was so out of the box. Insanely funny! Thanks for this video. I laughed all over again.
I never missed Hollywood Squares just so I could see what kind of tomfoolery Paul would come up with!
He never failed to make us all laugh!
RIP Paul Lynde! I'm sure ur up there making all the angels crackup😅
One of my favorites, love that sharp wit. Another one from Hollywood squares: question: why do motorcyclist wear leather? His response, because chiffon wrinkles
🤣🤣🤣
That is hilarious.
I loved watching him on Hollywood Squares!
He was the only reason I watched the show!
Yesyes
Great presentation, Paul was an absolute natural comedian and had the fastest wit on any subject matter as I had ever seen in my 59 years. Hollywood Squares was an amazing show. Wish the reruns were broadcast instead if the junk we have now.
Whay wit? Every line was written for him by the staff writers. Thats OK, his timing was great, but he actually feared doing anything unscripted.
@@mwilliams1330 On scripted shows yes. The man himself was fast with wit naturally.
This is a truism no matter how many times you repeat your negative comment
Thank you for setting the record straight on Paul’s manner of death. I had heard the tawdry tale and believed until today. You have done Paul justice.
Paul was a treasure. I saw him as a kid on Bewitched and was hooked. I am sure I learned 'snarkiness' very early on because of Bewitched. RIP Paul Lynde
That was great! For me ,the funny thing is you always knew it was Paul Lynde no matter what character he played. And it didn't matter,he was that funny.
The time and talent you invest in all your movies is incredible. Talent in research, composition, editing and your vocal talent. Thank you.
I really appreciate that :)
Love this segment of Paul Lin and his life's work. Loved him in the Bewitched show and everything about the Bewitched show and all the characters thank you so much for this entertainment. I was born in 63 and this was the best television ever when I was a kid.
Losing Paul was a huge loss. He was so funny, and his sassy voice, I loved so much!
I loved Paul Lynde in everything I saw him in. I think for me it was his voice, delivery & definitely his sass. It's funny that he & Alice Ghostly sounded so similar. with how they spoke.
Yes. And those in charge of Bewitched must have done it as a nod to Uncle Arthur. Was Ghostly's character supposed to be Arthur's daughter?
@@tammiecason7933 Really? That I didn't know.
@@tammiecason7933 i think they were supposed to be siblings. I think i rememver at least one episide they were in together. I may be wrong, tho.
@@juliadams42
Ms Ghostley, like Paul Lynde, started on Bewitched as a different character...a mortal working as a housekeeper, with a college-aged son she was putting through medical school, IIRC. Coincidentally (?) she was incredibly inept as a cook and cleaner but Samantha felt sorry for her and covered her mistakes and accidents.
Ms Ghostley was brought back but I don't remember her as being related to any member of Samantha's family.
@@howardkerr8174 its been so long ago...
I really appreciate how well this was done, respecting the man and his life, and pointing out how the media tries to sensationalize everything. Also, how a person's sexuality did not define them, their actions, or their history as they were known to viewers. After all, the vast majority of us didn't really know him personally, so I am grateful that his legacy was reviewed in the way that we all knew him, and not focusing on things that only a few people knew about.
It would have been very tempting to at once claim that the media exaggerated this or that, and then for the sake of engaging content do exactly that in this kind of a review.
I might just be only one person, but I appreciate the professionalism that went into making this video, and splicing everything together takes a very long time. Thanks for the effort!
ME TOO!!! Sensationalized bios are SUCH a turn off. I always feel gross after watching them.
Well said!
No arguments here.
@@tsirtosky1439 with maybe the possible exception of my bio when it comes out. That I would not mind being sensationalized one bit!
Agree to how well this was done, had the bio been done several decades ago it might have gone in a different direction ….. sign of the time on how we as a people appreciate our idols…thanks for the memories…
He was one of the funniest men that ever lived! He always made me laugh, growing up watching him!
❤ group therapy! Watching Bewitched as a kid I always thought Uncle Arthur was the biggest kid ever. Thanks for sharing and have a nice evening 😊👍

Lol 😂 I agree
That was way cool. He was a class act and definitely his talent for comedy shines in every part he played, that was a cool montage of his Hollywood Squares bits 👍
While looking at videos of him on Hollywood Squares, I was overwhelmed. I seriously could have found 100 worthwhile ones to use. In one he is asked..
If a man falls off a ship, they yell, Man Overboard.
What do you yell if a woman falls overboard?
He said.... Full Steam Ahead! OMG! I never expected that! 🤣
@@CoolClassics Bruce Vilanch wrote much of the joke answers for the "squares" but of course, Lynde was allowed to improve when he wanted and he was a master at it.
My brother & I absolutely lost it with his rendition of "Big Bad John". Loved this man & watched him in everything & anything. Thank you. 🌺
I was a very young kid when I saw "Bye-Bye Birdie," and I've never forgotten that, "Not until you're 21 it's not," line, which made me laugh out loud at the time. Best scene, and best number ("What's the Matter With Kids Today?") in the film if you ask me. Thanks for posting this, and well done.
When I was a kid, I thought there was something “different” about Paul. As an adult I realized what that difference was. He was a funny guy and quite risqué for his time. RIP funny guy.
I love the slant you give to all of your tributes and this one to Paul was especially good. So much information I never knew. Paul was once the week's guest host on the Mike Douglas show and I remember him telling Mike he had dreamed of being a Shakespearean actor but every time he read lines, the audience would laugh. Mike told him to fulfill his dream right then and promised the audience wouldn't laugh. Of course he hadn't recited ten words from Macbeth before everyone was roaring. He just turned to Mike and said, "See what I mean?"
🤣🤣🤣
Yep, he is just a naturally funny guy :)
@@CoolClassics he was riotlessly funny, He probably had Robin Williams syndrome, I guess we all do when we rise to aspire to be a great comedian and showman but will never know, he was taken too soon. Like Billy Joel sing only the Good die Young.
I think he did impressions and was in a lot of Hanna-Barbera cartoons as voices and personalities he was such a talented fellow.
These people do make good bio's and just long enough to hold your attention.
I wouldn't be complaining about being naturally funny. It is a rare gift.

Uncle Arthur was part of the fabric of my growing up. I loved Paul Lynde. He was funny as hell.
As a man turning 55 soon...simply, wow. Like yourself, i too have always appreciated his energy on Bewitched and Hollywood Squares. Thank you for making this. Peace! 🌱
The most accurate and true story of Paul Lynde,I believe that heart valve problems run genetically in families and there was no controversy over the man's death...just a great and over the top comedien and great showman with a great career in comedy...the greatness speaks for itself about this man.
Oh my God that man was so funny! It was such a loss when he passed away. I wish the comedian's nowadays could be half as funny as he was.
Paul’s Dad was amazing…; it’s sad that Paul had lost all his family so quickly.
All of the shows he was in were staples around our house and he was always hilarious to us. Thanks for the biography of him. Very informative and also brings his humor back even if for a brief few minutes
Also loved Aunt Clara and Doctor Bombay on Bewitched.
Who could hate Paul Lynde? Loved his energy
I also did not get a lot of his jokes back then when I was much younger but just the sound of his voice would crack a smile on my face 😃
I’ve been a fan of Paul Lynde- as far back as I can remember…like you I thought he was hilarious always- even at an age when I probably didn’t really understand the subject. Thanks.

His voice matched with his delivery makes his sarcastic delivery just perfect, the man also had an incredibly quick wit.

I was born in the 70’s, but had a very old soul. My parents used to watch Bewitched. That was back in the days when there was only one television in most peoples houses. So, I grew up watching what they watched. I am thankful for this. I was exposed to a lot of wonderful actors, actresses, and GREAT television shows. I, like you (the creator of this page) thought Paul Linde was exasperatingly funny to me…even though I was a child. I may not have gotten every joke (due to my age) but the ones I did get resulted in hearty guffaws for sure. His razor sharp wit was timeless and is still unmatched in my opinion. I thank him for having enough guts to go after his dreams. It did me a world of good…even to this day.

I'm with you. My earliest memories of a "celebrity" are of Paul Lynde. He had quite a presence, especially on Hollywood Squares.
I didn't know "gay" from anything back in the 70s, nor did I care. I was too young. I also didn't understand what came to be known as "camp".
I just knew all Paul Lynde had to do was show up, flash that huge toothy smile and say something snarky, and I'd crack up. He was "that" guy.

Paul Lynde was absolutely the star of Hollywood Squares. It was his best move ever to clean up and take a year off. He was memorable on that show, the one liners were and still are killer. Especially the innuendo, and the gay subtext: "your slip is showing".

There's not much more I could ask for in a nice and tight career retrospective. I needed this! I wish my dad had been alive to watch this. He was a fan, and Ive been growing in my fandom. You've done the work (that would've taken me 8+ hours of rabbit hole googling with mediocre results) to bring all this information together in a respectful yet honest bio. No, please don’t stop! Your videos are fantastic. Giving all of us the backstory on all of these wonderful people whom we have grown up watching. You do an excellent job, providing in-depth information (that must take some time gathering) that most of us would never ever know about. Paul Lynde was a gem, loved his sense of humor and timing and quick wit. Bewitched, the Munsters and Squares being my favorite. I’m mean, I know what the line or “punch line” is going to be, and I still burst out laughing. In part, because of the way he says it. My mistake was watching this while eating my breakfast. After that question about Liz Taylor and he answers “her chin”, I am now cleaning up my iPad of the cereal I was eating. No kidding, lol. Keep up the good work you do. For you, and for us!
Thank you for the great video. I love your narration style! Paul Lynde is one of my favorite comedic actors. He was so witty that he could do adult humor only adults could understand. Uncle Arthur always makes me laugh. I'm glad he did so many appearances so there will always be plenty of his work to enjoy.

Paul Lynde was absolutely hilarious!
He could crack me up by just reading a telephone directory!
On BEWITCHED, Bernard Fox, who was also hilarious, appeared more times as Doctor Bombay than Paul Lynde as Uncle Arthur. But Paul Lynde left a bigger impact.
Yes, I think it was all in Paul's delivery. Dr. Bombay was really eccentric for those days, and very effective.
@@ARIZJOE Bernard Fox’s “Doctor Bombay” was eccentric and over confident, like his “Colonel Crittenton” on “HOGAN’S HEROES”.
But Paul Lynde’s “Uncle Arthur” was just plain outrageously hilarious and totally unpredictable. That guy would do anything for a laugh and he always succeeded.
The improv from The Hollywood Squares was hilarious. I was drying tears the whole time. I think John Ritter was cut from the exact same cloth.
I am so grateful for this fantastic insight into paul Lynsey. He’s been one of my favorite famous Hollywood actor of all time.
