- Serena Williams has criticized a hotel in Paris after being turned away and denied a table. Williams took to X Monday, Aug. 6, to share the experience. “I’ve been denied access to rooftop to eat in a empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids. Always a first,” wrote the retired tennis player alongside a picture of the hotel. The Peninsula responded, “Dear Mrs. Williams, Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight. Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was indeed fully booked.”

The restaurant charges 200 euros per person, just to make a reservation. If you cancel your reservation within 48 hours of your designated time, they keep your deposit. So for those saying they should have just given Serena someone else’s table, that is ridiculous. Also, it shows how busy this restaurant is that they can charge that much just for a reservation.

As a Serena fan , I think a Reservation would have been better! I have been in very expensive restaurants that turned all kinds of people away without reservations. 5 star restaurants are not walk-ins regardless of how rich you are! They adhere to their policy.

I hosted for many years at an upscale steakhouse. Would annoy me when someone without a reservation would show up, I'd tell them an hour wait, they'd say "there's an empty table over there". My response, "okay, as long as you're fine with giving away your table next time you have a reservation to someone without one " . If any celebrities are reading this, it's nice having you in our dining room, but most places won't bend over backwards to accommodate you and screw over other diners. When I was 19, I worked at a hotel restaurant in Lake Louise. One day, the owner of the Hotel came for dinner, I did not know who he was and since he had no reservation, I asked him and his guests to wait at the bar, and told him we would get them as soon as a table would be free.
My colleagues freaked out, telling me I just made a huge mistake.
I was told later that the owner appreciated being treated like everyone. He saw how the clients were treated and liked it!
Conclusion : He was a great guy who did not feel entitled... not like some tennis player we know... 😊
