  • The Chandra X-ray Observatory, previously known as the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, was launched by the space shuttle Columbia on STS-93. Chandra is sensitive to X-ray sources 100 times fainter than any previous X-ray telescope.
    I set myself a goal to try to make a video as fast as I used to be able to but with my current quality of content. I thought Chandra would be a good mission to try this out on as to be honest it was secondary on my list. I managed to make this video in only three evenings when it normally takes me a few days to make a video and some how I think I've manage to make a video that's almost as good as my main ones. This was helped by already having rebuilt the shuttle for the last mission but still let me know what you think.

    When the flight director at mission control said we have lost dcu a and dcu b, that was because a gold pin that was plugging a faulty hole in the injector plate of the center engine had come loose and tore through the side of the center engine bell. Columbia narrowly avoided catastrophe in this instance.

      I think one more error and they would have probably all died, the payload was so heavy no abort procedure was deemed possible.

    Tiny tip - I would use the dark variant of the nose cone in future shuttle videos that you may produce. Otherwise, thank you for teaching me about many various space missions I hadn't known about prior (Like this one) and keep up the effort that you put into these videos.

    An interesting fact that I read recently:
    Apparently, Chandra and its IUS were so heavy that it would have been impossible to return to Earth safely with it onboard. This made aborting without damage basically impossible. Combined with the engine problems...

    • @_Andrew2002
      @_Andrew2002 Před 4 lety

      Was this from the NasaSpaceflight series on Chandra they just did? If not I recommend giving it a good read, it's so heavy that the one Shuttle they did not want to fly it on was Columbia, due to her being so heavy.
      ISS program made their wish impossible

    • @seansargeant7966
      @seansargeant7966 Před 4 lety

      @@_Andrew2002 No, I read a book at the public library which had all the missions that Columbia did (including a pretty detailed analysis of its breakup D: ). Where did they do this on NASASpaceflight?
      Also, the inability to abort may be the reason for people not wanting it on Columbia. Her weight seemed to be significantly higher than the others, even compared to Challenger's.

  • @ultralaggerREV1
    @ultralaggerREV1 Před 4 lety +2

    How can you keep a space shuttle stable in KSP

    • @GameplayReviewUK
      @GameplayReviewUK  Před 4 lety

      Easy, but to make it super easy have the large tank drain bottom to top and make sure the shuttle engines are positioned so they can gimbal through the change of centre of mass that takes place as the SRBs empty that's about it, I've also used reaction wheels but that is more to compensate for when the engines over compensate during SAS. This shuttle is a little different to that to in the sense that I've made this one so throttling the engines will effect pitch because I find that to be fun but to do this you want to be able to takeoff with about 50% thrust then slowly throttle up through ascent.

    • @ultralaggerREV1
      @ultralaggerREV1 Před 4 lety

      GameplayReviewUK my problems is that when launching any space shuttle, the solid rocket boosters causes the shuttle to spin and crash, the shuttle’s engines won’t engage they just shoot sparks and stop working. When the shuttle’s engines work and I want to separate the external fuel tank, the engines will stop receiving fuel to the shuttle’s main internal tanks causing it to stop flying

    • @ultralaggerREV1
      @ultralaggerREV1 Před 4 lety

      GameplayReviewUK another huge issue that is ocurring is this:
      Me: *has a rocket on standby at the launch pad*
      Me: *builds new rocket and recovers the one at the launchpad to launch the new rocket*
      Game: *Loads new rocket*
      ...
      Game: *REJECTS rocket and forces me to launch the rocket at the launch pad*
      Me: *breaks controller*

    • @GameplayReviewUK
      @GameplayReviewUK  Před 4 lety

      When you spin do you do a back flip or a front flip? assuming back flip, so limit the thrust on the SRBs also make sure you don't need full throttle to take off. If required add more boosters, mine has 16 per SRB at around 70% (more or less depends on payload weight)

    • @ultralaggerREV1
      @ultralaggerREV1 Před 4 lety
