    Todd Sucherman of the Styx is an iconic drummer playing an iconic sound. Playing in the controlled environment of the recording studio is one thing. How do they take those iconic drum tones with them on the road? Well... there's a lot of work involved and here is a peak behind the scenes of how STYX and Todd Sucherman and his drum tech Mark Petrocelli achieve that level day in and day out on tour. We take a look at the incredible Pearl drums themselves, how Mark and Todd like to tune the drums, what drum microphones they are using, and where they are placing them. This was so much fun and the first in many videos from the day!

    Mark is also a pretty talented drummer in his own right. I've seen him play many times back in our youth in Pittsburgh, we played and hung out at alot of the same venues back in the 80's and he was always such a pleasant dude to talk to, very humble and kind. I'm sure he would laugh at the mention and memories of the staple hangout "Some Place Else". So good to see him doing what he does for one of the worlds best!

    Ever since he took panozzo's place and he was no slouch himself, but drinking dominated his life. Todd re-energized that band and took them to a level that John may he rest in peace would have never been able to take them, and they're so lucky they got Todd as they're drummer. I mean, hes helped take the whole band to another level with his brilliant playing. And it certainly rubbed off on the rest of that band. And if they hadn't gotten him as a drummer, I don't think they would have lasted as long as they have.

    Thank you for digging deeper to explore how live sound really works. As a drummer for many years, i appreciate how well you covered this story. It is obvious at times in the interview, ie tuning, that the tech got nervous. You backed off and then he opened up.some more. Being the consummate pro drummer that Sucherman is, we get it when one has achieved the level of success. Cant tell ya all bout who it all works..picked up alot of new knowlegde here. Who interveiws a drum tech? You do. Awesome insight. Will look at what else you have in your video archive. Blessings, Ziggy

      Hi there. I signed up today, so that I could respond to some comments. Thank you for watching and enjoying the clip. I wouldn't say that I was nervous. When it comes to tuning or tensioning the heads, everyone has their own way and opinion, as to what's the "right way" of doing it. I've been asked on more than one occasion to do a tuning video. And while it seems tempting at times, I simply don't want to have the keyboard warriors telling me what I did wrong etc. So I'd say, I more or less shy away from the topic. Cheers!

    Every time I see Styx I can’t help but LOVE Todd’s drum sound , simply amazing. I purchased Audix mics for my kit as well If they are good enough for him they are good enough for me. When I was trying to find the perfect stick my thought Process was easy. There had to be one drummer out there with a stick endorsement that likes a stick I would like as well. I knew the stick size and measurements so I looked at all the sticks in that range I could not believe after going through 5 or 6 sets I purchased a set of Todd’s stick. I use Todd’s sticks to this day. A fat stick but lighter because of the maple.

    What I'm curious about is what effects (rack mount or plugins) the sound guy is using live on Todd's drums?

    • @cookie_mix
      @cookie_mix Před 8 měsíci

      I know a guy who knows the guy.
      Snare and Tom verbs have been in the desk for the past 6 years and have been short rooms for the most part. The toms get a little larger room than the snare but the snares gets to bleed into the Tom verb a little as well.
      I play with a little bit of pitch shift across the Tom group since they do have tones to them, but it’s only about 9% wet otherwise the imaging gets smeared.
      Last week I said screw it and out Abbey Road Chambers into SuperRack and I’m starting to get that tweaked in for the toms. Got bored.
      I don’t use a long verb on Todd’s kit live. Typically the room we are physically in gets messy and I would prefer to keep the precision in the drums since he is such an active player. The mix gets dense enough as it is and I need space for vocals and pitch instruments.
      If you listen to the videos that Todd posts on his channel, that all internal effects that Evan uses.

    • @cookie_mix
      @cookie_mix Před 9 měsíci +3

      Look at the K&M 217 thread adapter. You need to thread the drum hardware. You will also need Atlas LO-2B on some of your mics. The Tom mounts are 3rd party custom.
      At 1:04 you can see what I am referring to.

    i would love to know about the rack system...that must be his own marked riser also.., if the stands, and rack, have all memory locks, that has to be set up 99% perfect all the time....

      Maybe one of the techs will hop in here and clarify

    • @cookie_mix
      @cookie_mix Před 9 měsíci +3

      I’ll beat Mark to this.
      The answer is yes. The riser is marked. The kick drums legs push up against angle 📐 brackets to keep from sliding.
      All the feet of the rack and floor Tom’s are marked on the riser.
      If we do a small gig on a local 8x8 riser, there is another drum rug that gets placed on the riser with the correct markings.
      Todd busted Mark on being 1 cm off the other day so yes, the positioning must be correct everyday.
      On the touring road crew side of things, you start to see what can fail or can be messed up during load-in and you start to find ways of ensuring success, not just for you, but also the artist. You may not know what you don’t know, but as soon as you are faced with a new problem, you work to prevent that problem every time and build it into your routine.

      @@cookie_mix thanks !!....now what about the heights of the stands /boom arms/ splash arms...are they marked in any way for distance out, proper angle of cymbal etc.?..i'm just asking, i play in a local club band here in lehigh valley,pa. , i use a carpet that is marked and i have all my stands (tom and cymbal, no rack)marked with red nail polish at each joint when i fold them up to put in the bags, so next time we play, i will be able to take them out and extend them to the proper height...it's about 95% good, just have to tweak angle and distance here and there...also the floor, at the different places, where i have to set up is sometimes not level, that means i have to adjust certain things...the other night , my seat area, was in a crack in the stage floor, i was about 2" to one side...lol...had to get a piece of wood for 1 leg to level the seat...you do have to be ready for anything...

      In our situation, why make more work for yourself when you can keep as much together as possible? In your situation it sounds like you are doing as much as you can to keep the accuracy and consistency.

I use it to run Cubase with click and backing tracks and I use an audio input in my audio interface for my mic. I process most of the signal until it reaches FOH, because you never know who is going to do that on clubs.

    I love Todd’s style and the sound of his equipment. The big “but”, is the snare. Many like it and we all have our flavor, but people call his fat; it sounds flat to me. I’m surprised he gets stick rebound the way he does with the looseness of the batter.

    • @cookie_mix
      @cookie_mix Před 7 měsíci

      The stick rebound is the fine line we walk everyday. I need the snare’s tone to sit kinda low to make way for the other instruments and vocals but that pushes us up against the too loose line everyday.
      If the arrangements were sparser we could get away with a higher pitch and greater rebound more easily.
