Do Airlines Make Money From First Class?
Vložit

- Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines make a lot of their money at the front of the plane. A strong economy and industry consolidation has allowed the airlines, in recent years, to invest in more fuel efficient planes with better cabins focusing on premium classes. One focus has been rethinking business class. First class internationally and on some key domestic routes has become a hybrid of first and business class.
As of November 2019, if you wanted to book a first class round trip flight on Emirates from JFK to Dubai at the last minute it could cost you over $23,000.
Flying from New York to Mumbai? Etihad Airways offers a three-room luxury suite called The Residence which features a private bathroom, a private living room and a personal butler. Flying round trip on Etihad for that flight could be over $36,000.
And, for about $3,000, American Airlines Flagship First fliers can go from New York to Los Angeles with access to an exclusive check-in area and premium wines in the flagship lounge.
While the airlines make a significant amount of money packing people into coach like cattle, premium cabins like business and first class are still a major source of income for U.S carriers.

Unless you are on a ‘real’ airline like British Airways, like from New York to London, wider seat, more recline, better food. It’s way comfy.
For US-based airlines maybe, but around the world it can be a far more compelling product.
It's true. It's just better economy. And unless you are larger, there is little benefit. That includes BA. In reality, it's what long haul economy should be like.

You can select your seat on AA for free if you go in person after buying your ticket online my but that would require you to go in person before other people reserve them so unlikely unless you go early and select from the pool of seats from others haven't reserved yet.
Pay the extra $11, lol. Picking your seat is such a relief. I always go for windows and except for the time I too nicely let an obese couple have the window and middle seats (okay, I'm no model myself but i wasn't as big as them), I've always gotten the window seat when allowed to choose my preference. Also, never again am I ever letting someone have that precious spot if I got it because the aisle seat was way too uncomfortable. Better than the middle but still.
This should really be titled: do airlines really make money from economy seats?
And the answer is
Yes
@@georgewbush7 Most of the time, no.
Well according this video business travelers only count for 5% of total passanger but contribute 30% of total revenue, so many airlines actually make only 15-25% profit from their operations so, economy passanger is not actually making airlines money, but just important to cover the cost, profit only come if business travelers come on board.
@@fadrium1464 Interesting. What we are seeing here is the rich, who typically get free stuff, subsidize economy, who in which flies less than the free stuff crowd. I like this model because it allows anyone to fly, but does not penalize passengers because they only fly once a year.
There's a different video showing the actual math behind this. It it's simplicity business class and first class that truly make money. Economy/economy plus/premium (however you want to call not being a sardine for more than 4 hrs) really cover base costs. Of course if you book early enough most seats end up being pretty cheap.

Stefan Travis depends on which airline, and your definition of first class. If it’s the american definition of first class, the rest of the world calls that business class. Air travel in the US is pretty crap compared to the rest of the world. First class can be pretty luxurious. My favourite first class is SWISS. Their amenities include La Prairie ( a VERY expensive brand) Laurent-Perrier champagne, Evian skincare products, and a lot more. The only airlines I can think that do a crap first class are Air China, American Airlines (they use the same seat as Qatar biz for their first class?) and Air India.

Well, it seems that First Class kept getting more and more extravagant, until too few people actually booked it. Business class got upgraded to have flat bed seats and Premium Economy got added...
Basically: Business class is the new First Class and Premium Economy is the new Business class.
Airlines make more money with their first class than they do with all the people in economy seating.

I got the upgrade of all upgrades. I was about 14 years old flying from DCA to Phx via CLE aboard a continental 737-700. At Cleveland a flight attendant approached me and said she had a mother and son flying together that were not sitting together and she was wondering if I was willing to give up my seat so they could sit together. She said she had a seat for me "up front in the first row" if I could. I said sure and proceeded to the first row (behind the first class bulkhead) still in the economy section and sat diwn. A few minutes later she came by and said "oh no sweety I meant the very first row...." I must have looked like a deer in headlights because she said the words nice and clear..."IN FIRST CLASS!" 😳🤯😵
It would turn out it wasn't just the seat they gave me....I got the whole experience. Warm towels, warm snacking nuts, a pesto pasta with hot roll and ice cream Sundae. Of course served with silver ware. They baked cookies about 40 mins before landing just for us.....it was amazing it was 4.5 hours of bliss I even remember the inflight movie on my own personal screen ....(which was only in First class back then. The back had the screens that folded down from underneath the overhead luggage racks).anyways the movie was Bicentennial Man with the late Robin Williams....Best flight EVER!!!

A great omission of the video was the Concorde supersonic airplane. It flew for 26 years and had only one class.
The size of Concorde's seats and legroom was similar to that of economy class seats. However the food and the service was beyond first class. And of course a transatlantic trip was made half the time.

The commercial real estate company that I work for has 2 jets for us to use instead of flying and thus having to deal with the ever declining service of big airlines. We're able to hit 3-4 states for property tours and be back in Houston by dinner in the same day. I see now just exactly how pertinent it is to efficiency rather than what it looks like from the outside, which intitially I thought was status. This company has opened my eyes to so the other side and the methods behind these insanely busy people's madness. lol. Cheers.

On big body jets like the A380 and 747, you may get a private cabin with a bed in addition to what you get in Business class.
While a Business class flight still exceeds $4000 - $7000, it’s probably the more economical way to fly if you have flights exceeding 7 hours.

Delta screwed us this year. After being nice about a delayed flight due to their code share Skywest not having crew. We delayed our flight by a day. The next day they then tell us we won't make our connection which was in First. We again agree to another change and they stuck us in Coach. Upon arriving to the airport the agent asked us why they changed us, the plane was going to make it in time for the connection. When she tried to move us back they had blocked out our seats, so the agent told us to head straight to the next gate. We did was we were told and the agent at the connection said sorry those seats have been filled. I asked filled or sold? She wouldn't answer, at the end of the day we went from purchased First class seats to the worst seats on the plane. Very back against the bulk head. We were given 200.00 refund per ticket as if that actually covered the difference. Not to mention Delta would be compensated for the failure of Skywest to make the flight as well as the fact they were then able to sell our seats at premium rates. And people wonder why folks flip out. In general I am a free market guy, however for Airlines it's time for more regulations!
I fly business class domestically and sometimes internationally. You can find some really good rates if you devote time and energy to find them. My first flight in international business class is to Bogota, Colombia for $1000 roundtrip.
I've taken the Emirates flight first class from Dubai to LA a couple of times and their business class also. I have to say, the first class is pretty awesome and the business is the best I've tried. This last flight they had the floor to ceiling sliding suite doors and the previous time the doors only went up about 3/4 of the way. I had the caviar but nobody told me it was unlimited so I only had one serving. I did drink my weight in Dom Perignon though! Don't even get me started about the first class lounge in Dubai! I did it all using miles. I don't know how much longer they will honor them but I will continue to enjoy the lifestyle until they don't. It's hard to believe that is a government owned airline.
Airline classes in a nutshell:
Economy: Tin can in the sky.
Premium Economy: Same Tin can but with extra legroom for slightly richer fishes (humans)
Business class: Sofa+ Bed on the sky.
First class: Same as business with better food and beverage and on Emirates, a whole bathroom to yourself.

I bet that they don't make as big a margin as the flights in the Caribbean. These are amongst the most expensive in the world, covering short distances and could use some disruption, especially in The Grenadines.
Flying from the UK to Thailand for my annual holiday i have paid for business class all the way each time after feeling really rough and unwell in a packed economy four years ago, for me its well worth it for longhaul flights once a year.
The profit per passenger of First Class is normally enough to support the concept even in the face of some empty seats. One thing that puzzles me: Boeing could easily design a wall that could be slid to expand the main cabin, depending upon the demand of 1st and economy class. There are some flights where it's a ghost town up front. If on those flights they could recover 4 to 8 seats and sell them economy in the expanded economy cabin, that would get maximum revenue.
Change the title to history of first class in US airlines 👍🏼

Air travel takes time, hotel cost, food, internal travel (cabs, subway, bus) to name a few. First class economy class when the plane crashes everybody is affected.
That is true for every 1 in a million commercial flights that happens.
Why am I Watch this, I cant even afford economy seats.
I fly Delta One and Business class on Delta maybe 10 times a year... and the price for flights are different every single time. My regular NY to Shanghai trip varies between $6k and $8k depending on when I book it (in general earlier is better but not always). If you just look at the number of coach seats you could squeeze in the same space (maybe 4) you'd need those coach flights to cost $1500-$2000 to match the revenue per square foot. I don't know what that flight costs in Coach but I suspect it's less on average.
The only time I flew Premium Economy I found it to be no better than coach, I'd not pay extra for it myself.
Having said that... if one of our Corporate jets are available for the flight it's a no-brainer, airline first class is coach in comparison.
I love how this video came out riiight before covid

That video promised so much and delivered so little. Revenue isn't the interesting question, profit is! As the CEO of Delta said at the end, it's not about revenue maximisation it's about price optimisation ie most profitable seats sold most. Not even one mention of the margins of the different classes, that's what I want to know
Because separating lower price tickets from mid-high price tickets and from ultra high price tickets would be most profitable for airline companies, that simple
Amusis nope, i am just reaffirming what people see and they can’t believe it’s profitable to airline companies

Now maybe it could be possible, as another CZcamsr just showed in his channel, these companies are flying A-380 again. Let's hope everything returns to normality . . .
