    Learn how to make a DIY fog chiller! This was a really fun and easy DIY halloween project that is perfect for upping your Halloween game this year! We made a simple fog chiller that takes in fog from a regular fog machine, uses ice to make it nice and cold, and then creates a rolling fog effect as it comes out of the chiller.
    This project uses normal materials that you probably already have around the house and only takes about an hour to make. No complicated tools are necessary and it's a great project to do with the kids!
    We go all out for Halloween every year and do a huge haunt at our house. This diy fog chiller is a critical component of making our setup amazing.
    Did you enjoy the video? We'd love to hear your feedback in the comments!!

    The input "vent" is for air inductment, somewhat similar to how a dyson fan works. It does not work in your case because you have the fog going into a large chamber and then having it ooze out and exit port. If your pipe went through the chiller box without filling the box with fog it would work. Basically if you had a long pipe the fog would shoot out and have to push against all the air sitting in the pipe. The entry "vent" allows the fog to pull outside air that is at the same pressure as the air in the pipe, so it has less resistance shooting through the pipe.

      Ahhhh, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks a ton for the explanation! 🤘🏼💀

    • @OCLVIG
      @OCLVIG Před 4 lety +34

      Yep; An induction nozzle works well on my Trash Can Chiller which uses a continuous aluminum tube from entrance to exit. The one thing you want to make certain for any style fog chiller or ducting system, is that you place the fog machine nozzle 2 to 3 inches away from the inlet of your tubing. This allows the fog to pre-expand and increase in velocity, giving you a much fuller volume of fog at the exit of your device.

      Excellent advice!

    • @physixger
      @physixger Před 4 lety +13

      Putting it slightly more technically: there is a pressure p at each point in the pipe system, and the pressure gradient accelerates the gas, while pipes slow it down by friction (they act in a way as a resistor - Hagen-Poiseuille law).
      Now, if you have a gas moving at a certain velocity v inside a pipe, its particles move more in one specific direction than in all the others, so they don't move in the perpendicular directions as much (due to energy conservation). Hence, the pressure in the pipe is lower compared to an outside gas which isn't moving. This is what we describe as the Bernoulli equation.
      If you now drill a hole in the pipe (or stick another pipe perpendicularly to it), you get a positive pressure difference from the outside to the moving fluid which (given by the Hagen-Poiseuille law applied to the air sucking pipe) will suck in air to the given gas stream.
      However, if the resistance of the pipe (or fog chiller in this case) becomes large, then there will be a negative pressure gradient through the hole to the outside (because the fog machine creates a pressure difference on top of the dynamic pressure coming from the velocity of the stream), effectively making the fog blow out there.
      To be able to suck in more air, you'd somehow need to get the resistance in the fog chiller down - e.g. using bigger pipe diameters, spread out the ice, use a bigger exhaust, eliminate as many angles in the gas flow as possible (to minimize disturbances). Then also, I'd suggest using some valve to be able to control the diameter of the air input.
      Another simple option would be to screw a strong enough fan (PC fan or the like, with speed regulation) on top of the air input (while gas sealing the connection between the fog machine and its pipe). That would allow you to drive the fog chiller by pressure while still infusing air. (Note that in this case there would be a certain minimum fan speed at which the fan just compensates the pressure that the fog machine creates, and any speed above that would infuse air to the system.) The fan method would also be helpful to generally increase velocities inside the chiller, preventing condensation of fog and therefore making the device slightly more efficient.

    An alternative method is to use flexible ducting tube for the interior. Make it snake back and forth several times, then clamp it with adjustable ring clamps to pvc pipes on each end. This will improve the overall airflow while making an airtight and waterproof interior.

    Great idea, looking forward to trying it! We found some low cost fog enhancing tricks as well. Scatter ice all over the yard; it makes a huge difference in keeping fog low and dense. If the yard has a slight downgrade, try making a solid trail of ice and watch fog flow like a stream down the lawn.

    For the input , just use a straight tube and don't press the fog machine right up to the intake, just distance it about 2 inches or 2 fingers from the intake.
    The flowing smoke will create a venturi effect into the container , little to no fog will spill out and it will suck in more air.

    No matter what tote I tried I could not prevent fog from escaping the lid. So instead of a tote I used a bucket. Same build technique and it works better than the tote. There seems to be more fog being discharged rather than sitting in the tote due to the smaller volume of the bucket. Thanks for another awesome video.

    This looks much more compact and neater than what we created - I need to compare the effect. We used a large black trash can. We cut two holes in the sides almost at the ground, ran dryer exhaust hose through it and dumped ice all over the top of the hose. The cold was able to penetrate the flexible hose. It was inside a garage so we had to also rig up an exhaust fan and put an overflow bin below the trash can to contain water, but it worked well.

    I’m guessing the reason they recommended the Y fitting on the inlet was that they were putting their fog machine very close to the inlet and a fog machine needs to mix the output vapor with air to get max output. The cheaper (because you don’t need a Y fitting) and easier way to achieve this is by leaving a 1-2” gap between the output of the fog machine and your inlet pipe.

    • @johndef001
      @johndef001 Před rokem

      You describe an example of the "Venturi Effect" where the faster moving gas from the fogger entrains air from surroundings. You could even do the reverse, use a source of cold & fast-moving air to simultaneously entrain and cool the output from the fogger. Your method may be the best way to go, because more elaborate arrangements can put back pressure on the fogger, causing it to wear out sooner or produce less fog.
      CZcams has a lot of examples of DIY Venturi applications but some are way more complicated than you need. "DIY" and "Make Your Own Venturi Tube" are good searches to start with. The drawing here (czcams.com/video/rOJT65OSfV0/video.html) is a good example of a basic Venturi Tube. The video at czcams.com/video/Na9ORhYjvJU/video.html has a nice, brief discussion of the Venturi Effect in general.

    Here is an idea that might help mask the Cooler, use Foam to create a Head Stone and make it appear that the Skull is emerging from the Grave... Or you could make the Cooler look like a Mini Casket... Either way would probably work... Great Job....

    Great video, to the point, and a great job overall!!! About the intake vent (if it's still an issue), how about a one-way check valve like the one used on an air mattress or something similar?

      Thanks Vic!! Really appreciate it. A one-way valve makes a lot of sense.. Definitely something that could be good to test.

    If you're using 2 inch pvc pipe, you could seal around the pipe with one of those black rubber toilet sealers instead of silicone. Perfectly fit.

    If you put a fan in it on the exhaust it’ll pull air and fog in for a clean mixture.

    You could make that box hidden behind a tombstone or make looks like a crate or something.

    For a chiller of this style, I would think dry ice could work as well and last longer.

    Instead of chicken wire, they actually have wire mesh with about 2 cm holes in it for coops, vegetable protection in gardens, etc. it would then only require one layer of mesh and it would also be more effective at holding the ice up.

  • @c0pyimitati0n

    *Super tip* Skip the chicken wire and ice and just use frozen water bottles. No melted ice to worry about, and they stay frozen a lot longer.
    Also, a small computer fan installed at the exit pipe would push out every last bit of fog. Because a lot of fog stays in the machine/hose (or in your case storage bin)

    One thing to make the fog cooler better would be make the cooler tub into a grave stone to discise it
