Thanks for watching!
On this channel, I discuss topics like RPGs, CRPGs, JRPGs, FFXIV, Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo 4, Path of Exile, Elden Ring, MMOs, World of Warcraft, and gaming industry news. - Hry
From my perspective he's still the founder and regardless of the new role he hasn't handed over the keys. He's just getting a suit to handle the suits while he goes back to doing what he got into making games to do. Make a great game.
Either way, we'll see what happens.

Pilestedt is basically doing what Linus did with LMG. Turns over the management of the company so he can focus more of creative side of the house instead of the business side of the house. Hope he fixes the balancing issues. I feel the balance team has done more damage to the player counts and retention than what Sony did with the PSN requirement. With every balance patch, they are removing more and more fun out of the game. I use to have fun playing the game but with the last few balance changes I basically stopped playing because the game doesn't feel fun anymore. And pretty much this is the reason why I ended quitting every live service game. The fun disappeared thus got boring, I just found myself logging in just to do the dailies and log off as soon as that was done. Eventually just logging to do the dailies has become too much of a chore and I stop playing all together.
@@JT-qc9nb Sounds like Alexus will now have to take a back seat to him so hope definately springs eternal now.
He still owns the company so people needs to relax and see were it goes
Goes to Sony so it does not go to 177 more countries.
Well... the hype is basically dead at this point. Game is under 30k concurrent players during peak hours. Yeah, it's a school night, but just a couple weeks ago, we were seeing peaks of 100k at this same time.
@@qu1253 The main reason I haven't log in for the full month of May is cause all the weapons are trash which makes the TTK is too high. Once they fix that problem I'll be back into the game.
@@qu1253 Now thats flat out wrong. It was over 60k during the peak hours yesterday and that's Steam alone not including Playstation which is probably another 30k. There's no need to lie and exaggerate the numbers.
@@qu1253bro it is 60k during school on a weekday rn for steam. Your numbers are WAY off
Pilestedt: "fine, I'll do it myself"
If you look back through his tweets and replies, he mentions how his skills are in the creative department, coding, and etc and that running a company is the thing he’s least proficient at. This is a great thing for him and the company.
Little late for a big restructure, though, isn't it? The game has less than 30k concurrent players. All the momentum is gone and pretty much everyone has moved on.

My man said, "I'd rather code than deal 5 more minutes in a meeting with Sony executives"
im wondering if he wasnt what sony wanted stellar blade dev has been much more of a yes man
@@gregorycarter1940 I suspect that's part of it. But in defense of the stellar blade dev, it's one man versus many. It's a lot harder to hold your ground against unreasonable demands if you're alone, but if you're someone like Pilestedt is loved by the community (and I'm guessing his team - I'd like a boss like him) it becomes a lot harder to just get rid of them if you aren't getting what you want. That's especially true in this community, as I fully expect that if Sony did something malicious like a lay-off, the entire community would make sure to throw that right into Sony's face.
I feel like most of this comment section didnt even watch the video and are just commenting based on the video title alone.
Ha, underrated comment.
A big reason for that is the way the comment sections work.
“I want my opinion seen! I want my opinion to be liked!!!! I must be first to comment the *minute* that a video is posed!!!”
And that’s not to mention the bots.
He wants to be the one to find that brain bug..
This is how bad the balancing was. The CEO has to just do it himself.
I heard the head of the balance team drives A lexus
@@tiestofalljays now that lexus can take a seat at back of the bus behind Johan.
Considering how CEOs are essentially talking heads for suits, isn't this more like stepping up to a position that actually does something?
It's amazing how many people gave shit takes without even watching 50 seconds into the video. I hope Pilestdet can make the difference he wants with his new position as CCO. Knowing how much he agrees with the community I'm hopeful.
Are we *wrong* for suspecting meddling from Sony though??
@@iller3 oh definitely not, it's always on the table from those scumbags, but from the situation as we're seeing currently it seems like a decision that Pilestdet himself made.
@@iller3
you are not wrong, just some psycopath who suspect anything.
innocent until proven guilty.
@@iller3 i don't trust the new guy to not be bought out $100m by sony
@@Micecheese Pilestedt still owns the company
he just hired someone who is better at managing businiess while he can focus on the Game
This is probably a good thing for Johan Pilestedt. A significant "work-life balance" improvement *and* a dream job for someone with interests and talents in designing and developing games.
Given the state of the company (strong, growing), they can get a really excellent CEO in, and it sounds like they have.
That's pretty normal as a company scales up, it's a quite different skillset to run a small company to a large company
I can respect anyone who gets back in the trenches
Got me with that title! I was expecting a tragedy. Glad to see i was wrong lol.
I felt my heart drop in my chest when I read this. I understand needing an eye catching line for the algorithm but my nerves don't, please be kind do them.
Other than that it makes perfect sense. He and the others still own the company so it's not like they can't reverse the decision if it doesn't work out. Also Paradox is Swedish so it's very possible, I'd say likely, they knew each other before this. Arrowhead keeps making good decisions.
Oh boy. Paradox Interactive for CEO?
Yeah, that's sounding like "Time to add an additional launcher"
Uh oh.
He wasn't the CEO of Paradox, he was a development officer. Their roles are usually limited to negotiations with publishers, developers, and platforms, while allocating money and greenlighting projects.
If I'm not mistaken Pilestedt is the founder, so regardless of the new role and the new CEO, he'll likely still has final say on anything major change or development within the company.
@@LegendaryDrops
Yeah, I was just doing a knee jerk reaction, Paradox is really on brand though, because I remember there being a Paradox Publishing logo for Magicka 1.
I hope they don't do it, but I don't have enough faith that they won't introduce yet-another-third-party-launcher to any ecosystem haha.
Might go great.
@@PermanentlyTemporary doesn't mean you were wrong though, only time will tell but we've all seen this "Play" before

BRO THIS IS GREAT NEWS!
I'm hyped for Helldivers! We already know that Weapons mod/upgrades, a clan system and the illuminates are being worked on. I'm sure Helldivers 2 is just getting started!
Sadly, the PSN account debacle pretty much killed all the hype for this game. The fact that half the damn world still can't buy the game doesn't help.
@@qu1253Killed all the hype for you, maybe.
@@NuritaTsekurai Over 90% of the player base is gone. It ain't just me.
Wait what I am surprised and I really liked him like Sven. I look forward to further development. I will still play h2
I kind like it
Yeah, it sucks to lose a likeable CEO but Larian has the size and diversity in roles to allow him to stay in the creative side of things without getting to lost in the business side of things. Hopefully it works out for Johan.
As long as Sony is not walking back the 170+ countries locked out of the game, I'll not even consider touching the game again. Doesn't matter what the balancing is or how they release future updates.
Sadly, too many people people screamed "we defeated sony" and changed back their reviews to positive when all they changed was a PSN-linking requirement for existing players while still keeping the region-lock in place and adding even more countries to the list while they were at it. Sony now saw that a single nice tweet is enough to persuade the playerbase, so they will keep pushing bad decisions down their throats, especially with a new business-focused CEO.
Game is fun, so i will play it. Not gonna not play something i enjoy, just because of Sony.
@@joelaton1062 people are so eager to make an excuse to doing something when taking side, like showing off or bragging.
let them do what they believe and you enjoy what you like.
@@joelaton1062 good for you. People from 176 countries can't, just because of Sony. If your moral compass doesn't budge from that then fuck you.
Agree. Sony is a huge company - they weren't "defeated" as a whole. But they've probably (hopefully) learned from this, so while the "gamer to Sony" communication wasn't ideal, it occurred.
Gamers will also need to step up next time of course, but I think that will happen.
The main missed opportunity was in gamer-side organization, but it did get better, and the chance will come again.
Huge. They need a creative vision and this is the right choice.
He's taking a creative role thats great. He's been really invilved with the community so probably a good shift.
Now Steve sinclair is officially the only good CEO of a gaming company.
Oh wait, i forgot about our savior Gaben.
I would like to add Chris Roberts to the list. I know its controversial, but the project & the company has only grown under his leadership
Sven Vincke entered the chat. And took another 12 awards.
@@trinityx3o522 It's a very controversial take for sure, because he is a terrible CEO, but an amazing Dev because he is always trying to push the envelope. he is obviously a man with a vision and in time we will see if that vision will come to pass. but i can't deny that the game Engine tech innovations that have been achieved under his leadership are quite literally, game changing.
@@MEYH3M well, he is just a nerd who happens to have struck jackpot through the support from the community he has managed to create through his past works. Dont think he has ever managed a company this big & not just one, but two games of ridiculous ambition at the same time. He is really pushing his limits. But I would be a liar if I didn't admit that he has gotten better as a CEO & not just putting out blatant claims with no substance. Hopefully this year he manages to prove the mainstream wrong. Excited for 4.0 though, and Squadron 42 as well of course.
@@trinityx3o522 yeah that's fair.
This is awesome news. He’s a great studio head & he’s basically handed the business side to someone familiar while he works on creative. WIN-WIN
My long term take on this is simple: Arrowhead still owns their own stuff, and they simply hired someone to manage the business end.
Basically someone who speaks "boardroom" to deal with boardroom problems. Think about that for a moment... what boardroom issues could they be having? I'd say that was obvious to any but the most passionate fanboys of certain large companies. Pilestedt brought in someone who has the particular set of skills to deal with the big issues from above, while he himself can focus on *his* skills, which is in developing great games.
And for the future? Finding ways to be *actually* independent of exclusivity politics in order to get funding for development is a lot easier with a) money in the bank and b) someone trained for that.
This is a good move, both for Arrowhead specifically and gaming as a whole. More independent studios with bank in their pockets, owned by actual gamers instead of boardrooms helps the entire industry.
The balance team really needs to play their own game. The Eruptor and the crossbow being nerfed the way they were, and the Purifier being released in this state is utterly dumbfounding. I don't think I've ever played a shooting game with a gun that felt as trash as the Purifier, and they even insisted it "slaps hard". It's bizarre.
Being closer to the kitchen is never a bad thing (in theory). And i hope, for good or for bad, this company becomes a gaming industry case study.
Well i'm sure pilestedt We'll be great On improving the game boosted morale on both the Devs and the gamers And generally being a great guy I am a little worried for the new business CEO on the one hand yes it's great that Somebody who has more experience on that side of a gaming company will be able to fill the shoes of the chaotic mess right now but on the other hand sometimes the power kind of gets to their head and they might make the most ridiculous decision that only benefits Himself and the executives and just leaving the devs and the gamers to the dust now if I knew the guy who's taking the CEO role to be a great guy then maybe I'll be less cautious but obviously not so I'll just be kind like that person who's just awkwardly waving on a bunch of people and smiling In a parade or something
I think in the short term this will do doubt be for the benefit of the game and the community and I’m excited. I’m slightly concerned about longterm the new ceo making too many business decisions based on growth. But I imagine Johan chose this guy for a reason and it sounds like they are friends. I reckon Johan will maintain a lot of control of the direction of the company anyway.
This is basically Linus stepping down as CEO of LTT. He is still the owner and major interest in the business so he is ultimately still in charge, just not going to be in charge of the day to day corporate ongoings.
They even gave themselves a similiar title for their new role.
Thank goodness, he seems to understand how to hear the community and parse what they have to say, let's hope this leads to better balancing most of all
Sony puts their own people as CEO of Arrowhead, possibly the reason Pilestedt is still in the company, he love his own company and the game and possibly one of the top shareholder as well. Like Steve Jobs did, he demoted himself to prioritize the development of Apple products.
LOL This is exactly what Linus at LTT did...Hired a new CEO and became Chief creative officer
phenomenal video!
Amazing. What a chad. Hope he manages to make most of the guns feel better and makes bot rescue missions playable.
His responses bode well for the future of Helldivers 2. Sony still needs to reinstate the countries they removed though. It really hurt our community unfortunately.

Hey guys watch the video before making negative comments.
I applaud him for stepping down and being honest about his decisions. Time will tell if this was the right move but it appears that this will be a good move. 👍🏽
“Hey! Maybe something nice will happen!”
I've been playing a lot of Baldur's Gate 3 again. I still love Helldivers. But my time is limited.
Knowing SONY and how petty they are, i bet they asked for him to step down as a consequence of all of the drama...
and he just called a friend to replace him and stepped down to Creative Chief.
and Sony is probably just baffled, like: "wait, you can't do that!?"
the pessimist in me is a little worried what a paradox suit will do to the monetization of the game. because god i hate paradox DLC strategy.
I really hope it was HIS decision and not order from above.
Anyways, i hope he will handle the game good.
at around 4:37 It got me thinking about Diablo 4. Perhaps not enough of the developers was not playing their own game lol.
I had little hope before this happened. Now I have none. This will be the last major order I fail as a part of this community.
they still haven't addressed the fact that if you're in a region blocked country and own the game, you can't see the steam page and leave a review
What I appreciate most here is actually the take on Helldivers weapon changes making the game fall off. They made about a perfect game and then just kept crapping on it.
>Everybody uses the autoshotgun because it's the only weapon with appropriate damage and spread? Nerf the ammo and recoil so people don't complain too much about nerfing the damage.
>Medium armor piercing single-shot rifles don't do enough damage to justify their downsides? Tell them we've improved the armor piercing (but we didn't).
>Release the greatest addition of the Patriot Mech that everybody loves and it feels perfect? Nerf the rocket lock and break the hitbox so it kills you if you try to aim.. oh and remove the armor piercing if you don't hit the target directly with the rockets we removed the ability to hit targets directly on.
>Oh oh most recently we realized we _fucked up_ nerfing the railgun but we can't say it so we added the Quasar Cannon. But now we think people are overusing the Quasar so we have to add a whole 10-second additional recharge time when we expect our players to be frantically running from overwhelming numbers, so that they can't take out this new walking factory enemy we added for some reason that isn't even clear to us at the moment
I swear everytime I see one of your videos and the shirt you're wearing and I'm like: "my man"
This is great for him and us
Possible catalyst for the decline of Helldivers 2? We will have to wait and see what comes of this.
Although I think this move is to slow down or stop this from happening.
is helldivers 2 bleeding out? will everyone move to deep rock galactic?
Would have liked a bit less clickbaity title and thumbnail, but yeah this reminds me a lot of No Mans Sky.
The creative mind behind it is highly talented and defined the game. Then it blows up and they are chosen as a representative, which they didn't like and the rest of the story you already know.
This is a decision Pilestedt will not have done without thinking and talking a ton, so I trust him.
People also blow it out of proportions. 70k players peak is still a lot (comparison: Warframe peaked at 50k today) and the game is still a lot of fun.
What a massive coup!!!! Holy shit Arrowhead meets Paradox .
They go way back actually. If my memory serves me right paradox was the publisher for magicka. Those games are true gems by the way.
Holy habdgrenades. This is kinda amazing
Nice shirt bro
Can't help but be uneasy about this
Maybe he was forced to by the evil Snoy to step down.
Wouldnt be surprising.
No matter what he says. If sony says, that he have to feel consequences for his actions, than this could be one step to appease snoy.
Hopefully despite the new position Johan is still able to override the bean counters, especially the one from Paradox (I love their games, but holy fuck are they greedy).
I just realize it's almost 1 month I didnt play the game.
Peace
If you wanna do something right, you have to do it yourself. It takes balls to step up and lead the forces in the trenches, but it takes even bigger balls to go back to the trenches and lead them yourself.
they should invite bobby keoitick so they can become the real next Blizzard
Let's be honest. Being a CEO is like having a target on your back. Most people think the perks worth it (and be honest, it always is). Some exceptional people don't, and boy, do I admire them.
That means that we're almost certainly not getting the game back in those blacklisted countries. The game is losing players fast, we can't fucking survive or do basic major orders now due to having half the fucking playerbase needed.
It's Joever
I think a lot of players want the game to be something else than it’s devs, from what I’ve read people are obsessing over balance changes, “railgun doesn’t drop every enemy in the game with two shots? Literally unplayable game ded”, “We are barely clearing missions on the hardest difficulty, too hard game ded”.
It’s almost like people want the game to be a brain dead shooter, a power fantasy, so then they could complain on the lack of content.
It’s impossible to please everyone, especially grown children, so I absolutely support the CEO man, let him make the game he wants, if you won’t like it, don’t play it.
All well and good but the new guy milked Paradox and turned them in to a DLC bukake studio.
Inviting business focused C-Suites to an independent game dev is like inviting a vampire into your home. The team is now a blood bank for that executive who has zero talent in making games.
Having a creative with less experience trying to negotiate with Sony is likely what led to all the PSN requirement issues. Sometimes you need a devil in your corner.
Everyone needs a lawyer, doesn’t mean you gotta like em
Check out the CEO profile and CV. This isn't a wall street CEO, former Paradox leadership talent is amoung the better past experiences you can have recruited 😊
Okay, "capitalism bad" Andy. the company is privately owned so he's working for the owners(which includes the former CEO), not beholden to shareholders' quarterly reports.
First?!
Edit: You are just as fast tbf, update today, video today 👌
And what about the 176 restricted countries?
more like stepping around.
Idk the new guy's resume, but bringing business focused people in is what has made gaming the dystopian wasteland it is today.
If I didn't check out before the CM fiasco, I would have checked out at the PSN linking. Everything that has happened has killed any and all desire to bother touching that game again. I tune in to these little updates though, in hopes that something changes for the better.
He's not that guy. I'll, very likely, stop watching content related to the game with this. It was such a waste of money to me now.
Sure Paradox has a great track record lol
"I'm not forgiving some of the issues they've had up to this point." Of all the pretentious bs. Done with this dopes bs.
Sony def clapped him
I'm pretty sad about this honestly.
I mean not like, sad sad but like disappointed I guess? It's just a major bummer that he caught so much flack from the community that he stepped down.
In my eyes, everyone gave the studio all the sh* that Sony deserved. Sucks
Then again it may really just be that he just wanted to be more in the creative part than the business part in which case, if it really is just that, cool. Lol
The CEO knew about the Sony Network requirement 9 months before the shit hit the fan.
They deserved as much hate as Sony.
@@brigandboy1425 3 months before launch it was on the steam page, it was announced, it had been announced, it was there for everyone to see.
So of course they knew, you didn't know because you didn't read. That's the only difference.
Now I am not defending requiring a third party account. I'm not defending Sony's actions in that. I'm not defending sony for accepting money in regions that couldn't even make an account if they wanted to, but I'm also certainly not interested in defending all the "fans" that gave the devs an insane amount of hate when the devs DONT EVEN CONTROL SELLING THE GAME.
The advertising, marketing, steam page, all of it was done by SONY accepting the money from lock out regions etc etc etc. was indeed, Sony. (99% chance).
This is all to do with the PUBLISHER of the game. It's literally in the name P-U-B-L-I-S-H-E-R
Look, I'm so glad to see the gaming community stand up and not eat the steaming hot sh*t sandwich that was served to them for ONCE. It's a breath of fresh air...turned into stinky sh*t air because everyone put the exact wrong people in their sights choosing the wrong target and nearly giving the party actually at fault a complete pass, a full on get out of jail free card just about. It's a complete shame, and if you don't see that, I really don't think you understand how the business side of this all works at all.

oh god the Paradox CEO, that sounds awful, Paradox is the worst, while good at their craft, $400 is not a price tag you want on anything.
Not the Paradox CEO...
@@rusty9573 i mean it's a Paradox business manager becoming a CEO, so not sure what your issue is with this really, it's going to be an awful time.
Paradox screwed Arrowhead pretty massively (money and IP control) so if Pilestedt trusts him, this guy knows all about crappy business practices and knows he was hired to avoid them.
idk man I am always pessimistic whenever someone from Paradox is involved. They are obsessed with nickel and diming their community with paid dlc
It just keeps getting fucking worse
Imagine if Rebb stepped down from leading Digital Extremes and they hired an outsider with a masters degree in business who has never touched a video game in his life, because he believes that it is "a waste of time that could be spent making money."
Warframe would be ruined within a year.
You have this mixed up a bit. Johan essentially stepped down into a position like Rebbs rather than being locked into the business side and unable to control the development of the game.
There is no future they f’d this game already
Well, the guy sleep-walked in the whole PSN situation, so something was bound to happen. Be afraid! For now the company will be more malleable to outside interference!
Now people get to worry if the ship might get steered into the rocks.
wow. can't wait for the DLC stratagem.
It isnt yours to forgive. He did nothing wrong. Sony is to blame for all actual problems that came up. Any other problems you have are just that your problems.
This makes me extremely nervous. I honestly can't imagine this ending well overall.
