  • Lot's of people have been criticizing Rayllum this season, and I'll be honest, some of their points, on the surface, do seem valid. So, today we take an in-depth look into Callum and Rayla's story throughout this season and past seasons as well, and we will come to a conclusion on whether or not these criticisms truly are valid or not.

One idea I have is that in S6 Aaravos will start to reach out to Callum because he's used dark magic again and strengthened the connection Aaravos has to him. However, Callum will keep this to himself because of his guilt over using dark magic again. Rayla will deduce Callum is carrying a burden but rather than demand he be honest with her, instead use the opportunity to sympathise with him for feeling he needs to keep the burden to himself but admit she was wrong to keep so many burdens to herself and finally apologise for what she did 2 years ago. This would hopefully motivate him to confess to both the dark magic use and Aaravos talking to him.

@isabelamelendezcarvajal4908 Yeah exactly. At this point they're about 90% there. They just need one more big thing to go all the way, which would ideally be Rayla apologising. Might also help if Rayla does something to redeem herself and this could be how she does it: by not letting Callum make the same mistakes she made and is there for him the way she didn't let him be there for her.

I agree with what u said!! But, if Callum will really be the one to relise Aaravos as many fans theoryze, i don't really think Callum will tell Rayla his connection with dark magic until the very end of that arc or at least until the moment he isn't capable of doing so. I think that may happen, in my opinian, because Callum needs to break, i think he needs that moment one and only for himself, needs to turn his back in all he ever belived when it comes to magic, family, love, or ANYTHING, just like what Aaravos once did to Viren. But diff from Viren, Callum's friends and family are no puppets of his, they aren't his blinded loyal daughter or his dog-complex son (Not saying this to offend neither Soren or Claudia, love them so much, just how Viren prob saw then after a bit of Aaravo's in his life😭😭), they have the power and will confront Callum about his choices or the lack of them in their knowing, and i think Rayla will play a main role in that investigation. As u said, i also dont belive she'll ever force him to tell her anything he doesn't feel confortable to, but im very sure in that situation she wont be as lovely and soft as Callum was with her, she'll be extra worry for many reasons, but i dont think that will ever generate a discuss in the present, maybe in the future tho. What do u think?

@thehartdodo9828 I'm hoping season 6 will have Callum going through a massive identity crisis similar to season 2 but tenfold. Aaravos will try and tempt Callum with every ounce of his silver tongue and Callum will at one point be on the brink but hopefully Rayla will be his South Star and guide him out the darkness and give Aaravos the Fuk U he sorely needs.

I agree. And also people have been saying that season 5 was trying to justify Rayla's actions and essentially saying she was right and Callum's in the wrong, but I really don't think that's the case. Really neither of them are right or wrong for what they've done, but Rayla definitely has something to apologize for and that's the *lying* and not for leaving but instead for hurting him because of *the way she left* . While those mistakes were understandable she still needs to apologize because she *did* hurt Callum after all. They just need to have a talk with each other to come to a mutual understanding.

I genuinely love how much you called out in this video, as conflicted as I feel about needed this type of explanation outside the show. Like, I honestly would have had Through the Moon and Bloodmoon Huntress be mini-movies instead of comics so MORE people can understand, even as casual viewers. But one thing that I think you missed was Rayla’s letter. I think the big reason why Callum was so open towards Rayla’s struggle in season 5 and so open towards her point of view in culture, even without Ethari’s advice or insight, is because of Rayla expressing her point of view in culture with the letter. Don’t take me for an idiot, she was still wrong to deceive him more than once, but I feel like the letter gives fair explanation as to why Callum is already having a strong grasp on her culture while expressing patience towards Rayla out of love. All I’m waiting for now is for Rayla to express that love and trust were the real truth between her parents when they fought Viren TOGETHER and for her to express full accountability and regret for being unfair to Callum by not showing the trust he deserved. That said, you’ve earned yourself a sub with this vid 👍

    @user-ob5lp2co8j Před 10 měsíci +18

I honestly do feel like Rayla should apologize for leaving, but the reason is not as simple as you might think at first. If anything, a lot of people who defend and try to justify Rayla miss the point of why Rayllum shippers who have even read Bloodmoon Huntress are so upset with Rayla anyway. And a lot of people who try to call Rayla devious or make her sound cruel have a habit of going too far without acknowledging her reasoning. And you, as a smart bean, have called out that it’s good and healthy to look into people’s reasoning. So why are so many people waiting for an apology? Why are there plenty of Rayllum shippers who have read Bloodmoon Huntress and are STILL angry and/or upset with Rayla? Well, after spending a couple of days calming my mind with laughter, this is my reason for why. This is the REAL TRUTH with Rayla and her issues with Callum, no matter how much reasoning or explaining is given: Rayla was not fair to Callum.
She valued her own desires above everything else, including her relationship with Callum. She ignored Callum’s desires and deceived him by telling him she would let them go and be together. She left him on his birthday and broke his heart for two years. She refused to let them be together when that’s what Callum wanted more than anything else because of knowing they were better off together. And that was not fair to Callum.
And then we go to episode 7 of season 4 where Callum is troubled because of Aaravos possessing him. He asks Rayla to kill him if Aaravos ever possesses him again and, instead of offering a strong or helpful solution or giving promising comfort, she insists the exact opposite of what is actually true. She tells him that nobody can control him or make his choices for him, even when that is EXACTLY what Aaravos does to him in front of her face. And then, she calls him a dummy for being afraid of being driven down a path of darkness and dismisses his concerns while he is clearly suffering and scared. This was not fair to Callum.
Now, does this imply that Rayla is a bad person for these things or that she is terrible. OF COURSE NOT. Because I have made very similar mistakes, and Rayla’s mistakes are mistakes I can relate to. I once went to court for breaking school rules and, as a result of it, I betrayed my father’s trust. This was not fair to my father. And I WAS WRONG FOR IT. And when Rayla tried defending herself by saying that hurting Callum was the last thing she wanted in episode 4 of season 5, that was something that I could relate to because I tried giving myself a similar defense at first. When I broke school rules the way I did, I did not threaten or hurt or assault anyone, and I tried defending myself by expressing that I never meant for anything bad to happen. But then I had to learn to take responsibility for my choices so things could heal between me and my father more properly. And that, I think, is the main reason why Rayla is going to apologize to Callum for leaving: Taking responsibility. Regardless of her reasoning that’s well provided by her letter and her culture, she still decided to not be fair towards many of his desires and struggles. And that is why I think her biggest moments in the next season will involve her taking more responsibility while making things a lot more fair on Callum’s part.
Consider my opinion, experience, and faith expressed.

Now Rayla can see through Callum's eyes now what means togetherness when you loves someone. I hope for the next season that Callum have a talk with Ethari about the acts of love one must be doing for the safe for the people who loves even if hurts when you don't understand why they're did in first place. This will help to Callum finally see through Rayla's view and culture to connect to the moon arcanum.
It will guide them for a REAL RECONCILIATION to a bright future together destined to have. By the way, thanks for the video it was chévere the analysis 😊

@isabelamelendezcarvajal4908 I know, right? I've actually wanted to see a conversation between Callun and Ethari to better understand not only the cultural differences of the Moonshadow Culture but also Callum confronting and condemning Ethari for ghosting Rayla, which he still has to answer for. Telling him what he did deeply hurt Rayla, saying how she felt unloved and abandoned by him.
The truth that I believe has left him hurt, broken-hearted, distraught, guilt-ridden, and conscious-stricken ever since. This would push Ethari to make enormous and sincere apologies to Rayla, wanting to tell her so many things but not knowing what to say, how, or where to start. Admitting to Rayla how deeply wrong he is for what he did, how truly apologetic he is, how horribly he failed, wronged, and disappointed her as a father. How he regrets what he did every day since then. Telling her how much he wants her to be in his life, how much he loves and misses her every day over and over, that she is important and precious to him. This gives Ethari a chance to sincerely and genuinely reconcile, reunite, and repair his relationship with Rayla.
With Callum, Rayla, and Ethari, their conversations have so humongous and amazing potential to address all these issues, emotional baggages, and psychological traumas.

For Rayla, that hug was a hug of happiness, she's happy because her love have saved her, he have saved everyone, and more important, he get out of it alive, but for Callum is a hug of "sorry", we can see him hiding his face in Rayla's shoulders like he's about to cry, he hesitate in even touch her because of how emberrasing he's, in that hug he's trying to forgive himself for what he have done and also trying to own Rayla's forgivines, ofc he can't do that just by giving a hug.

@The Cov Another amazing and captivating video. Your work is awesome. 🎉🎉
You nailed everything right on the head with Rayllum. What you said about Callum having yet learn and understand Rayla's perspective and the upbringing of her culture is super important and crucial for him to learn.
And the best person who's without a doubt to bring up these cultural differences and understanding to Callum is known other than Ethari.
Considering that Ethari has a tremendous amount of apologies to make to his daughter for ghosting her because that is still something that he has to answer for. Hurting and suffering from the damaging reprecussions of some of his own failures and negligence. A heartbroken father whose never even forgiven himself since that day. It'll really hit extremely hard for Ethari to be confronted by this, but I believe wholeheartedly that he'd do whatever it takes to admitting his wrongdoings and failures as a father, expressing all the unimaginable guilt, regret, remorse and despair that's weighed on his heart and sincerely apologizing to Rayla for everything, refusing to lose her again and vowing to never let her down again. I also think Callum will also have some things to say to Ethari about.
Once Rayla and Ethari repair and work through their own emotional baggages and psychological traumas, we can see Callum explaining to Ethari about those last two years, Rayla's departure, what led her to that decision, and her reasoning behind them.
Hearing about this would really hit Ethari in the emotions, as seeing how some of his and Runaan's teaching not only heavily influenced Rayla, but realizing how some of Runaan's horrible, negative traits and teachings made Rayla believe that this self sacrificing decision was the way to protect Callum. This would monumentally horrify and traumatize Ethari. Admitting to Rayla how terrifyingly wrong some of their teachings were. It could really push Ethari, alongside working with Callum, to show and tell Rayla how important she is to him, that he values her life more than anything, that he will never bear the thought of losing her again, not after everything that's happened.
I know this may seem like a lot. But these conversations would pack such an emotional punch. But they're important in order to gain a newfound hope, trust, knowledge, and understanding on all sides. Just so much potential for all of them. Can't wait for what's going to come in S6 and S7. Keep up the amazing work, my friend. 👏👏👏❤

@TheCov Always. Ethari needs to be held accountable for what he did. The torturing and agonizing guilt, regret, shame, remorse, and despair will be consuming him even more once he's reunited with Rayla. Because I think that he'd desperately want to say so many things to Rayla, what he wants her to know and he needs her to know, how much he failed and disappointed her as a father, how enormously sorry he is, how much he deeply loves and misses her every day, but wanting her to know that he's never even had the heart to forgive himself nor lived with himself since that day.
But during this, he immediately reaches an emotionally severe breaking point where he starts endlessly and profoundly apologizing every second and minute to his daughter, his little moonberry, refusing to let Rayla go again, refusing to ever lose her, vowing to never fail or disappoint his daughter ever again. Where I believe he's willing to do anything to reconcile and repair his relationship with Rayla. Their Big Feelings Time conversations as father and daughter will be worth every single tear, reassurance, and alleviation.
I've been wanting this reunion and reconciliation to happen since the ending of S3. This is a critical and crucial part of the moonfam, getting some major focus in S6 and S7. Something that Aaron Ehasz, among others working on the show, confirmed to be a huge plotline in future seasons. With some moonfam backstory/flashbacks along with Runaan's atonement/redemption arc with Rayla. One of the biggest key factors for Runaan's redemption is going to be him effortlessly working alongside Ethari to unghosting Rayla and her parents so they can come home. Which I believe will still happen in future seasons.

I understand why Sarai went with Harrow. My issue is that she was the one who struck the killing blow to the Magma Titan. Being there to protect her husband and sister was admirable and showed how much she loved them. However, considering Sarai was the one protesting that the Magma Titan might be an intelligent creature with a family, charging in to personally kill it was very hypocritical. The only excuse I can make is that Amaya was hurt during the fight, so I guess Sarai's big sister instincts kicked in before she could think about the moral implications of what she was doing.

Aaron Ehasz stated that even at the end of season 5, they still technically aren't even together yet. So, I would say that her talk with Amaya is what prompted her to see Callum as someone she could trust to help her bear the burden.

Interesting video, thanks to the author for the work.
But there is a question for the author, what do you think, will their relationship be romantic again or still, as some believe, they will remain friends?
If you take my opinion, I believe that now their relationship is moving more romantically than friendly.
There were many moments that clearly spoke of a love interest rather than a friendship. I would characterize the current stage as the end of season 2 and episode 1 of season 3, we are now somewhere here.
But still, for 4 seasons, we still don’t understand if Rayla loves Callum, there were no similar questions from other characters, etc. There was only a scene with Amaya, but there is just a flashback, without exact explanations. With Callum, everything is clear, episode 1 of season 4, episode 4 of season 5, it can be directly said there that he loves her, but it’s not yet clear with Rayla.

Good explanation video! Fault is the wrong word for cultural differences that aren’t understood by rallyla callum and alot of fan base. Rayllum is amazing but complicated. Interpreting actions aren’t concrete. Alot of context is missing from the background of dragon prince because it seems that they can’t animate it so it leaves viewers to connect the dots. Personally want rallum romance to come back but both of them have to work to understand each other that is what gets lost in translation

I've been waiting for this vid. And well, to be honest, your video has answered at least to some of the problems I personally had, making me feel a bit better on how the things played out in the show, even though I still have some things that are wrong in my opinion with this ship. I dunno, maybe becouse I'm always sceptic to everything and pesymistic most of the time.
And I mean, yeah, trust is important in a realtionship and you could say that Callum doesn't throw his self-respect out the window and still want's the answers whenever Rayla thinks she's ready, that's alright, but it doesn't change the fact that what Rayla is doing is wrong. Like - she has no reason to not trust Callum, who, by the way, DESERVES these answers, even though he's not demanding them. And he definitely does not deserve being robbed and lied to. What strikes me the most is the fact Rayla never actually apologised to Callum, or at least I did not notice. She only said "she could explain" as if there was a justification for her actions.
And I don't think that Rayla's past is that justification. Even if what Rayla does is encoded in the culture of her people, the way she treats Callum is still wrong and unjust. Do you remember what she said when she talked with Amaya? "I couldn't bare to put him in danger". See that? Always about I, I, I. It was all about her own comfort. Callum's right to be by her side and do with his own life whatever he wants was denied by her. He wasn't treated like an equal, rather like a child. And to this very day we didn't see Callum and Rayla resolve this issues. Not really, we've only seen them simply ignoring them like all of it never happened. I mean yeah, Amaya had a conversation with Rayla about that, but did Rayla feel any remorse? Do we have a guranatee that this won't just happen again?
What infuriates me the most is the fact that the creators are almost completely ignoring these issues, whether the ones I write or you talk about. They either put some answers outside of the actual show or are ignoring them completely, also missing or deliberately destroying great moments to adress these problems. Like that one scene in S4 when Callum and Rayla were just about to have a serious talk when Soren came in and destroyed the moment for the sake of cheap, infantile comedy moment. I really, really dislike that.
I still ship Rayllum and love the show, don't get me wrong, but I also feel so much frustration to know that the show could have been even better in so many ways. I'm still a bit salty about the first half of S5, however I must admit that I really enjoyed the second part of it. Especially the part when Callum literally punched Finnegan in the face, that one was great. I also like that slowly but surely the show becomes at least tiny bit more mature and dark, that makes me enjoy it much more.

well if you saw the entire video, you will know that we are getting her apology soon, Aaron confirmed it twice, first in a tweet, and second in reel James interview.
"Will we see some sort of talk between them or are they OK now?"
"what do you think, reel? do you still think things need to be discussed?"
      "yeah I do."
"yep, I agree." s6 will be our season. 😎

To me they don't behave like a pair of teenagers in love. They seem more like a friends or maybe an old married couple, as they don't kiss even once for the whole two seasons now.

  • @chandlerblack1667
    @chandlerblack1667 Před 7 měsíci

While I do believe Rayla needs to apologize, I still don't think it's because she lied. In TTM, Callum suggested lying to Lujanne to hide rebuilding the Moon Nexus temple for Rayla. Lying, like many sins, is in the matter of context: lying for your own benefit or lying for another's sake.
Now, you can argue that Rayla's lie was both, and you'd probably be right, but I think what hurt Callum the most was her leaving him. As @TheCov mentioned, he wanted to support her and love her as they worked together. Instead, she took away his choice, his freedom, to love her by leaving. This is actually one of Callum's greatest personality traits: the freedom to choose and act (referenced by Tales of Xadia). So Rayla leaving him was a direct blow to not only his relationship with her, but also his very self!
I also personally don't like the 'cultural environment' being used like an excuse for certain actions. What I mean by that is the characters should still hold some responsibility for what they've done; it doesn't have to be ALL of the blame, but own some of it. Yes, culture plays a huge part in a person's growth and values, and I'm not trying to ignore that. But you should still own up to what you've done. In S5, Rayla did steal from Callum and did feel guilty when she was caught. She also was about to explain herself afterwards in order to properly clear things up with Callum. I still wouldn't change anything about that scene (or ANY of S5, it was glorious!), but I do want all characters to maintain a sense of agency for everything they do. I'll stop my ranting on this part with an example: Claudia was raised in a culture where Dark Magic is embraced as the only magic humans can do, therfore accepted. She never has a problem with using it to solve her problems (she does hesitate at times when she needs to take more extreme measures, see 2x9 and 4x1). And yet, she admits to Callum and Ezran near the end of 5x9 that she has, in fact, done terrible things, even if she justifies it as helping save Viren. Why would this be considered terrible if it was how her culture raised her?
...FTR, if you disagree with me, please just reply to me. I always enjoy talking with different views rather than fighting them. Half the time, we're both right!

@chandlerblack1667 Callum has still yet to fully understand Rayla's culture, motivations, and perspective. Rayla grew up in a culture that fully supported that the best way protecting your loved ones was by leaving them behind by taking on choices and making sacrifices so that your family doesn't have to. How is it that it's considered terrible when it was how she was raised.
Claudia, as you stated, grew up in a culture that heavily supported and advocated that Dark Magic was the way and solution to all problems and the only magic that humans could connect to without realizing the deadly consequences and fatal repercussions of using it.
