Doesn't look like a single slab, but also doesn't need to. The final piece looks great 👍 .... though if it was in my house, I would've used some of that space underneath for storage!

@@ggwoodworks why didn't you just put a sheet of some 1-2mm sawn veneer on top of it? You didn't even need to use cherry for that whole panel glue up and could have done it a whole lot cheaper and looking like what you were going for if you did it like that. Just build a template in the shape of your live edge/cambium so you can take out one or two mm with a router and then take that first part and glue it to a panel out of some cheaper wood (oak for example, maybe even some way cheaper evergreen Blockboard) that is two mm thinner than your original first piece before the router took out the 2 mm. Glue them using dominos for example so you have matching heights and then glue in the sawn veneer after using your router and template to match it to the live edge. That would have really looked like one single slab and you would have spent like a tenth of what this cost you. Dont get me wrong, I like the look of the finished media board but it just doesn't look like one slab at all. It would have even looked more realistic if you cut strips as wide as your slabs thickness and rotated them all by 90° before the glue up.
Looks great. As the king of overkill, I would have ended up using dowels as well as glue. Probably not necessary though. After seeing how strong glue is, it usually breaks the wood before it breaks the glued joint
@@MeZZaiRe From what I've seen, biscuits don't provide real strength to a glue-up like this, they just aid with alignment. Dowels would do more, but in either case, neither is going to provide meaningful effective utility. The glue is plenty strong on its own in this case; for this application the glue bond will be stronger than the wood itself.
@@Powerofthewaaaghthank you for being the voice of reason. I've built plenty without biscuits or dowels, and fully expect them to last many decades. It'll be something else that fails before the glue joint (assuming good quality PVA or better was used).
@@Powerofthewaaagh Plus, it's a tabletop. Unless people are body slamming their entertainment center, I severely doubt it's gonna be under extreme pressures anyway.
I have a non-Festool (see also, affordable) track saw, and also a joiner. That said, even my MasterForce track saw will cut cleanly enough to skip running it across Ol’ Chippy.
The cut depends more on the quality of the cutting disc. If it is worn, not sharp or even bended somehow, the result sill be poor. A nice disc even with a cheap saw will give a nice cut, provided the line is really straight 😊
I love woodworking videos because you'll just see what looks like divine handwork making pieces of timber into those beautiful laquered wood pieces, only for them to almost always end up in those super ugly minimalistic modern styles of decor.
if you went in with an airbrush gun to blend the different strokes between the woods, it would absolutely take this up another level. great work regardless!! satisfying to watch lol
I cut down a 43 " black cherry a few years back. Was begging sawyers, turners, woodworkers to come get it. Heated my house and.smoked my meat for 3 years. Most beautiful wood i have ever burned.
Looks great, stop giving yourself a hard time. Those of us that have worked with cherry know what you're talking about and what to expect. It looks fantastic. You couldn't ask for better.
Pretty much all table and counter tops like this are made from multiple slabs so I'd say it's fine that you can see the lines between the boards, still looks fantastic
Pardon my ignorance, but I am a complete newbie at this. I see other people use dowels or mortise and tenon. I’m guessing that because there’s no tensile stress glue will suffice. Do you know in which cases you would use those?
🤠 Looks like 3 boards glued together. Doesn't look like a single slab. Finished product is nicely done. Remember making a cutting board like this in junior high shop class.

It's called a mantle when it's above a fireplace like that, not a tabletop. Looks good though.
Hard to tell how well you did because you jump through the views so fast and seem to favor the distant views.
Nice what finish did you use it looks like mustard haha 😂

There is an electric/gas fireplace under the slab so it cant be used for storage

Looks awesome, if you get a chance in a few years snap a picture and show the color change. Love how cherry darkens in color.
Does it darken if it’s not exposed to sunlight?
@@NatediggetydogAFAIK it changes color back and forth, depending on exposure. So darkens when in bright areas, lightens when in dark areas. But that's info from a decade ago or so, can't confirm accuracy.
@Natediggetydog it's my experience it darkens when the wood oxidizes So even if not I'm direct light it can darken over time.
Sleeper ... All you can watch in a few years time will be the cracks in the jointings ...
@Baetzibaer what's wrong with the top? Why would there be cracks?
That looks amazing 🤩 my dad just installed a bar top similar to that just a live edge oak bartop
Gotta love oak!
So nice to see woodworking that's not just epoxy with wood trimmings.

Question. Do the boards expand? Does it need to have the biscuits or is just the glue and clamp good enough?
If it is dried properly it wont expand, but if there was still moisture in the boards they will warp a little at the seams.
Looks great. As the king of overkill, I would have ended up using dowels as well as glue. Probably not necessary though. After seeing how strong glue is, it usually breaks the wood before it breaks the glued joint
Right off the bat I noticed no biscuits being used. This is a necessity for larger boards , even if using today’s quality adhesives.
I was about to mention that, how sturdy is it with just glue holding it together. Probably not that great.

Semen

Cherry wood. Gorgeous
Stunningly beautiful!!
Nice work Yes indeed 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful result.
It’s beautiful, that’s truly amazing.
How come you always do a half cut with the mitre saw, then a 2nd pass to fully cut it?
Makes it easier with thick hardwoods
For my own knowledge, why did you choose to not use pegs or biscuits to strengthen the bond?

Is just gluing edge to edge with out any reinforcement-wise?

It's nice, except the "natural" edge
Masterful.
Love the look of cherry…and the smell when you cut it is fantastic.
That live edge has so much charm and character in the final result.

I can see the sections still looks awesome. But also I'm a carpenter, joiner for over 20 years
The expectation now seems to be 2 inch struts. That tabletop is absolute premium.
Wouldn't it have been sturdier if yo dowled the boards together? Glue alone doesn't sound like it will hold the board together for long.
