FILM DESCRIPTION:
Final Destination 2 screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber make their directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher with facial hair) wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood friends Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson), and Tommy (William Lee Scott). When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he tries to save his beloved friends. However, he finds out that relatively minor changes can make major problems for the future. The Butterfly Effect also stars Eric Stoltz, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title was inspired by the story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury.

Rewatched this last night. Made me wonder why they wasted time on the two trash sequels when they set up two prequels right in the first one. Both Evan's dad and grandfather had the same thing. Would've been much more interesting to follow the family curse.
That's exactly what I thought. Should've made the next film about his father.
For real. I wanted to see if Evan’s father being in the asylum, if he messed up the timeline like Evan, was the best outcome for him and his family.
Part 2 was just for money
Or even the 2 stillborns, even if well, they'd probably be almost the same film lol
Or about his brothers that killed themselves would be great too.
When you realize that Evan's blackouts are due to his future self traveling back in time to temporarily take over his body
Fyi, this movie involves a part of predestination paradoxes in some black outs, while some of the others are modifying
The confusing part is, what was the original timeline then? If Kutcher was always meant to travel back in time to perform certain acts during the blackouts, that would mean that there's a default timeline where he just goes through with the child abuse etc without putting up a fight. Which doesn't rly make sense.
Kutcher had to be doing something during those blackouts, for instance when he ran away from the exploding mailbox with his friends, he couldn't simply have just been unconscious
@@therealcjc the blackouts were like the pre decided periods wherein his future self would eventually possess the body. So the default timeline did in fact involve him going through all harassment stuff. But I think it was implied that him going back in time and changing certain things was almost pre-decided. Which I think is the whole point of the curse. He's basically a puppet.
Yeah
WAIT I DID NOT REALIZE OMG
I'm just wondering what that orderly in the background is thinking, is he like "Ah geez, they're both crazy..."?
You mean orderly..??
Lol
The guys probably used to inmates talking like that.
Maybe he was thinking about what he would have for lunch
The crazy thing about this scene is that Evan going back is the reason why his father was killed by the guard. In him trying to find out how to fix everything, he proved his father right. That going back will only further the damage.
DA BOUL BLACKLUNGZ - The only thing I can think of is, because his dad also has this power, he’s also experiencing going back and forth through time and he’s tired of reliving things and things being changed and switched around so quickly...... so he tries to just kill him
@@CharlieSheenIsFired this is why I couldn’t watch this movie again let alone see this scene 😞💯
@@CharlieSheenIsFired No he literally explains it, in this very scene why he tries to kill him... You don't need to make up your own theories when the very vid you're theorising about already has an explanation... He literally is trying to kill him so as to stop the curse "It has to end with me". 'Paying attention' - It's a thing!
@@sketch3744 - I understand the scene. Get over yourself......
@@CharlieSheenIsFired yet your explanation makes it seems as if you don’t…
"You can't play god son!, you can't change who people are, without destroying who they were!"
+Aaron Foust thats BS
How so?!
+Aaron Foust changing one life has minor effects on the timeline, besides it's barely noticeable, an little glitch deja vu and none is the wiser..like u didn't know that's what deja vu is? Now if you excuse me I gotta go back to slicing single frame pornography into family disney film classics..
"I will send u a post card" lol
Yes I know what Deja Vu is, u didn't have to tell me about the disney porn thing, and I guess that's true I mean, look at Back to the Future.
IT'S A MOVIE
I would have been more interested in having the longest conversation possible with the only person who might be able to understand what I'm going through rather than how Evan chose to interact with his father in this scene.
I think Evan’s main flaw is he only thought about what was happening at that particular moment, he didn’t consider the consequences and fully give up on time traveling until the very end of the movie.
It's a character flaw, that makes Evan a better character, if he was actually smart like that then the movie wouldn't happen
exactly what i was thinking, thank you for ur comment.
The point It was not Evan doing It perfectly fine, he Still knows very little about His "condition" and His motives are heavily tainted by His emotional state, Hes desperate, ofc he wouldnt see the bigger picture until he started to see every thing that got worse for His interventions
I really enjoy the way he delivers the line “you can’t play god, son” with such intensity.
I know a lot of people won't agree, but this movie is a masterpiece. Very underrated.
its not underrated lol
There are so many technical issues
bad acting. but great concept
It's one of my favorites. Do you know of any similar films?
@@matvangogh that's because of Kutcher lol
His dad is right. Despite, having good intentions, you can't change something without destroying something else. People always think that if they can go back in time and change a horrible event or do things differently, things will turn out for the better but altering one thing can end up altering many other things and not always for the better. Things are what they are.
Exactly! I honestly be wishing my moms never met the last she married that abused me from childhood. But then if I had some type of time traveling power and prevent that from happening I wouldn't have a younger brother or sister. And just an older brother that I don't see much cause he lives in another state, which would make me a lonely child
Yeah like sometimes I wonder "what if we went back in time and saved Abe Lincoln, JFK, or MLK jr?" but at the same time we could cause a series of events that alter the course of history in ways none of us can imagine!
@MichaelSunny
Or what if Hitler succeeded?
Yikes😳
Nope , Jason made everything perfect again just like he said he would. He found a way and made all his friend's lives better.
They should make a butterfly effect about Ethan's Father
That kid actor was amazing.
It's logan lerman
@@janikaalday5026.....THAT is LOGAN LERMAN wtf
His father didn't like postcards...
XD
He didn't prepare his body in various ways to hear that.
Don't ever mention those things in his company.
"Today I got to meet my father, his name is Jason and he’s crazy. I hope he’ll let me call him Dad."
jason without the mask, right, right.
Sounds like every modern woman 😂 this guy is crazy and broke, hope he lets me call him daddy
The scene with Lenny is so sad....
I used that line on my sister once, U should B were I AM!
Unreal the depth to this movie let alone one scene
"You cant change who people are without destroying who they were"
This is the best movie ever made. I wanna see Ashton Kutcher in more sci-fi and horror and time travel movies.
This was the best movie he was ever in.
The way jason plays it off by smiling, then he surprisingly jumped over the table is hilarious
I like how the guard in the back is just standing there lol
Listen to your father Evan, your time travel powers are dangerous, even Doc Brown would tell you lol.
Yet they changed marty's familiy for the better. His brother was a white collar worker, his parents were more confident people, his dad's bully was washing his car and doc found love by going yo the 19th century. This movie sees only the negatives of time travel.
@James D in his early years yeah. It was only in the events of Back to the Future part 2 was when Doc Brown realized how dangerous time travel is because Marty bought the Sports Almanac, which Biff got ahold of, went back in time and gave it to his younger self. This would be when Marty and Doc's timeline would become a living hell.
im doc brown and i aprove of this message
People why are you talking about back to the future in the butterfly effect video? 😂 Ok the point of this 2 movies is about time travel both are fantasies so we see the consequences of their action of the characters in good and bad ways. It's logical to see these events is because is the choices of their actions.
Not really, cause in the end, evan save his dog, and a mother with her baby, and he save lenny, tommy and kaighley live too
That explains the strangling. His father was right, and Evan should've listened to him. Jason should've told his son what he went through just so he can understand, so Evan doesn't make the same mistakes his father made that got him institutionalized.
although the strangling i believe is a bit much cause his fathers crazy
@@91Definitehe’s not crazy.. he was fixing something that should have never been.
@@delonking301 then why choke him out? Cause he’s not understanding him?
@@91Definitehis dad knew his son was the reason his life was like that he was probably trying to erase him from the time line.
@@91Definitehe literally said why… “it has to end with me” then proceeds to strangle him. He’s killing his son so the curse will end with his own life
I saw Lenny in this, and I was like, "AWW… FOGGY…!".
Now I realize he was played by foggy. Wow.
Far gee. Far gee. Far gee. Far gee.
You can’t change the past without changing the present. Sometimes for the worst. This movie is underrated.
I remember that when he went up into the attic, he found some old papers that show that his grandfather, his father's father, was also crazy. This thing is passed from generation to generation.
In early versions of the script, the character of Evan was originally Chris Treborn. When the "T" is moved over, it becomes "Christ Reborn". This was changed to Evan Treborn, which is a play on "Event Reborn".
This movie is disturbing as hell.
This was the only memory he could revisit and never change the outcome of which would be perfect for him to make sure to learn to use his powers with more control
One of my favorite things about the movie: Evan’s trips play out to the end wherever he lands. It didn’t shy away from showing the unpleasant consequences of the best of intentions.
The ironic thing here is that Evan shouldn't even exist because Jason most likely manipulated time to end up with the mother but that ultimately fails, hence the three stillborn (including Evan)
i love this soo much. i love evan so much. for always one of my favorite characters of all time.
I think the father wanted in His crazy/twisted state to prevent Evan the Road to insanity that he took by trying to Fix the past before, thats why Hes so desperate when he sees Evan so optimistic saying the postcard thing, like he didnt even know how wrong he was and how Much pain It would being to his life and the ones he loved, and that determination plus naivety were the last straw of His decisión of trying to kill Evan
The best thing about this scene is the music, its just perfect for this.
"You can't play God, son!" * Plays God by trying to murder son *
"Replay - DSK" ❤️
He was tryna save him the pain
@@Betroid and to save others who may be impacted too
I don't think he tried to murder him but rather shock him, as that seems to be the thing that ends time travel flashbacks.
@@gogl0l386
Earlier in the movie he says along the lines of “kill him it’s the only way”
I never realised the 7 year old Evan was played by Logan Lerman
lol
James D damn you’re dumb
Just imagine for a moment you have this ability. What would you do? Try to change your own outcome and get people out of bad homes? I think this movie is about something extraordinary that we can’t remember.
When Evan gave Lenny the shard, he told him to cut the rope, not to kill Tommy. He can’t put the blame on Evan.
He may mistook it as a metaphor lol
@@RyZeRxWolfChannel woahhh

I’ve always loved this scene
This film addresses ptsd so well.
It is a crime how underrated this movie is it just goes to show that critics they don’t know what the people like they only know what they like.
the most crazy scene isnt even on youtube when lenny has all those model planes in his room and in his 20s... I am in my early 30s and still live at home through financial issues with getting a property and I feel so ashamed and sad seeing that scene.
How are you doing now?

you cant change what people are without destroying who they were
Dang... imagine a timeline in which we got prequels about his older siblings, father and bloodline instead of the crappy sequels we actaully got
Okay so lenny knew here that evan knew everything the whole time ! So he seem to be onto evan time travel And in another timeline when evan throws himself off the wheel chair he tells lenny “ you owe me that much “ and lenny stares at him like if he knew that evan changed everything and he wasnt crazy on this timeline
No, the reason he said “you owe me that much” is because he lost his arms preventing Lenny killing the mom and baby
I just seen it and I thought the same thing
I missed the detail so many times of his father yelling “I.. love… you..” while he’s trying to kill Evan which is saving him technically 😢

Trade a drug addict uncle for a doctor uncle sounds like a good trade to me though.
2:14 that smile 😅
Someone explain this for me. So when he is about to travel back he is in a different let’s say ‘timeline’ to the original one. So does he go back and say the exact same thing to his dad that he did in the original timeline? But how can that be when in the original timeline Lenny never ends up in mental institution and Kayleigh isn’t a prostitute, so why would he go back in the original timeline and say that?
Bootstrap paradox
He stays in the current timeline because he has not changed anything when visiting his father. This scene reveals why his dad tried to strangle him to death when he went to see him in his youth - his father realised that his son has the same ability and will only harm others just like he did. Out of concern for his ex-wife, he had to end it before the boy made it worse.
Its so sad that in the end, he realises the only reason that one or more of the people he knows falls to darkness, is simply because he exists. By stopping his existence and killing himself in the womb, everyone went on to live peacefully. Such a sad existence to know just being alive causes other lives to be so badly affected.
🥺😭 poor Lenny

" it must end with me"
Crazy people are very smart Evan's dad makes a great point but wait is that why his dad tried to kill him in the middle of the movie 😀😋
he should have talked to his dad more often and used this flashback. He ended up listening to his dad anyway.
As much as we all may want to change the past, it happened for a reason.

Lol I can imagine him fighting thanos
Poor Lenny.
I saw the title of this, and I thought… why not tell that to Morgan Freeman?
Wondered why he never looked at the video of their interaction before he "went back in time". I literally blackout too and "another me" takes over. (Hate when it happens. Strains my body but I still do stuff. Wrote a 16 page college paper blacked out and got an A- on it. Creepy to me).
