I love Columbo since I was a teenager in Damascus, Syria, I used to watch him, rest his soul, he was the greatest.
When you’re 3 steps ahead of Columbo, he’s already at the 5th step.
They always try to play high level chess, but they dont realize until the very end that they were facing a Grand Master all along
The more pompous the suspect was, the more Columbo dug in and delivered a thoroughly satisfying 'gotcha' moment. I loved the last scene, when Columbo said, 'You're under arrest, sir", and the candidate closed his eyes. You can just imagine the thoughts going 'round his head.
Yeah , Jackie Cooper really did a great job
Jackie Cooper did a great job in this episode. Cooper was nominated for Best Actor in 1931 at age 9.
but we all know him so well as Perry White from Superman (1978) - my fav comic book film

I have seen every episode of Colombo and this is one of my favorites
Yeah this was a very entertaining episode but I'm curious about a few things--- it shows the Candidate's campaign manager speeding out of the parking lot and Jackie Cooper standing there while the security detail piles in their car to give chase. Then it shows his manager getting out of the car in the garage and Jackie Cooper is already there waiting for him . How did he get there before him ? Also , Columbo was at the Dentist when it was 9:30-10pm at night ? Do Dentist's keep those kind of hours ? And why wasn't Columbo worried or alarmed when he called his wife after 10pm and she wasn't home ? Where was she ? He simply said " she wasn't home " . How did he know she wasn't asleep or in the bathroom , etc. ? And why was Columbo so relieved and happy when he discovered it wasn't the Candidate who was actually murdered ? Was the murder of his manager less important ?
One of the greatest gotchas and episodes of Columbo! I felt for the wife, poor lady, the look on her face at the end... I wish they had had a shot of the mistress' look, though
Never thought much of these “old, stuffy” shows when I was younger, until having nothing else to do, or watch, I sat down for this episode of Columbo. I’ve been hooked ever since
Jackie Cooper made some of the greatest face expressions during his career he fitted perfect playing this part.
Every episiode is fantastic but there is one small problem in this one. When the firecracker went off, there would've been residue on the balcony
There were, what, 20 people in the room right after they heard it? Nobody would've thought to look for that. Except maybe Columbo, who didn’t need to.
True, but when the people burst into the room, the Senator pointed to the balcony where the “shot” came from. The police ran there. They were on the balcony. Small pieces of paper and the burn mark would’ve been seen
Plus, how did the crowd in the next room, with music going, loud conversations, hear a miniscule pop from a teeny firecracker ?
I agree. Even the spent cracker itself. But this was superfluous to Columbo's reckoning as he'd already discovered the bullet in the wall and drawn his conclusion.
@tommydimopoulos6484 Higher wind speeds on a high rise. At least 27 mph faster. The residue was mostly blown away. In everyones hast, they went to the balcony stepping on the crime scene and any remaining evidence was altered and diluted. The scene was contaminated.
It’s hilarious the way Columbo tolerates his rant by agreeing with him and clasping his hands together. Lol
Literally his wife “dodged a bullet” second time around. He would’ve kept on seeing that woman and a scandal would’ve unfolded. Mistress also got to see what a piece of garbage she was falling for.
BOO! That isn't a Halloween boo. THE moment of the episode is after Columbo answers all the 'yes sir' questions then he gets the 'all you got to do is dig the bullet out' and Columbo says, no sir and Jackie's face melts. That imo is the best 4 seconds of the episode. You went right up to it and left it out.....boo!

This was another brilliant ending. Politicians are experts at explaining away things but he was trapped here. The big question is: who did Lt. Columbo vote for?
Not many know that Lt. Columbia was actually an avowed national socialist.
I remember this very well the smug politician & the lieutenant getting 'stuck in' to solving the case..excellent 12 minutes from the greatest detective show to come out of the states. 👍

So the Candidate's Police security consisted of one guy stationed in the hallway outside his room and another three guys standing together and talking in the parking lot

This great episode could be called "The Dumb Criminal Candidate". Firecracker residue on the floor, the sound of a firecracker being so different from that os bullet being fired, the old broken wrist watch trick...

The calculated calmness in Columbo's tone was such a stark contrast to the panicked murderer trying desperately to prove their innocence, like a person hanging from a tall building grasping onto whatever they could by the tips of their fingers before being bested by gravity. Columbo was that gravity that the murderer simply couldn't overcome in the end

My favourite part of this was when Hayward said “That’s right Columbo! I am the candidate for crime! And I would’ve gotten away with it, if it wasn’t for you and your Columbing!”

I've seen this over and over again. And I always think the same thing tie lady who played the killers wife. Is absolutely beautiful.

Jackie Cooper was a great villain and the bullet business at the end was classic Columbo writing. The writers would spend days just coming up with that one little mind-blowing clue.
One thing that stood apart this series from other detective shows was that the audience knew from the beginning who the culprit was.

You have to love how cheap some of these episodes were. You can actually see the warping in the wall where the cityscape is painted on outside the apartment.
Typically, those are canvas for re-use.

TV screens were crappy back then. They were often small, blurry, slightly distorted, and low resolution. They could get away with cheap props in those days.

Desilu Productions is a fascinating tip toe into those waters, if you're down to do a little digging (plenty of documentaries to find about it).
Lucy and Desi Arnez (of "I Love Lucy" fame) coming together to make their own production company, so they wouldn't be constrained by the companies at the time, and cut loose to do their own thing and breathing major life into sci-fi (Star Trek) in a world that believed in *"MORE WESTERNS AND DRAMA MUSICALS!"*
More than that, they set the standard for studio lighting and staging sound, and even live audience placement/reaction, that is still used *to this day!*
They wrote the book that Friend's, and every show like it, use to set up _to this day!_

This episode had a weak motive for murder. He didn't even seem that he liked her very much. He murdered someone to keep her? I don't know...

Watching Jackie Cooper the editor for the metropolitan newspaper he is a superb actor like so many politicians and persons of leadership. Why don't we have a real life Columbo out there to catch these crooks. It's as if there are more crooks than good guys.

I have the Columbo series from 1-7 before Peter Falk reprised his roll in the 80's. I'm 30+ & my teenage years thought there was a murder mystery episode. Does anyone know if this is true? Is it in a later episode? 1989-3003 possibly? I want that episode! Or am I mistaken?
Not sure if this is what you're referring to but there was an episode in season 10 , " A Bird in the Hand " where the killer wasn't revealed until close to the end .

Behind every problem there are two major causes: "Either money or a woman sometimes both". Investigation must be conducted according to these two major factors to become successful and prompt.
You'd think Sergeant Vernon would have told Columbo that Hayward gave his secretary his briefcase to put in the safe and they'd have checked it and found the gun.
When a firecracker goes off, doesn't it create a paper mess? Where's that? And if a gun were fired from outside, wouldn't the glass bits come into the room? He fired from inside so the glass bits would be outside.
He stepped out on the balcony to fire the shot.

It's like so you are telling me someone shot at you from the high floor with a revolver round that goes through the window and doesn't pass through the wall and with previous conversations you had with the guy that he was trying to justify something that made no sense
Many of these Columbo episodes have the perpetrator implementing the crime through phone calls intended to deceive by means of establishing a false alibi or, in the case of this episode, calling in the threat to implicate organized crime for the hit. Did it ever occur to the screenwriters that a simple check with the phone company would have established immediately that the threatening call came from the candidate's own home? Admittedly it would have made this the shortest Columbo episode in history, but it would also been a much more credible story.
Also, isn't it a little strange that when Columbo called his wife after 9:30PM that she wasn't home and he doesn't even seem to care? The writing on this show was often a little to loose for all its hype.

In every Columbo episode there is a QUID that solve the case, but that virtually in every instance would be impossible/illegal/insufficient in a real situation. Here for example, Columbo gathered evidence of a crime in a search without a warrant (something that in other episodes he explicitly states it can not be used to incriminate the suspect). ;-) Two more things are not clear: 1) why the senator needs to kill his own campain manager, which certainly would not have betrayed him; 2) no need to explode the firecraker and make the hole in the wall... there was no proof against him.
One thing always tickled me about this episode. Jackie Cooper's character lights a firecracker rolled in red paper (probably a Black Cat firecracker) on the balcony to sound like a gunshot. They would have found that firecracker paper all over that balcony along with a powder burn from the firecracker going off. A little silly, if you ask me, but hey, it works.
